Vale Mr Peter Bloomfield (Narrandera)

Narrandera Race Club has informed Racing NSW of the passing of Mr Peter Bloomfield.

Michael Bailey, on behalf of NRC, sent the following: "Peter Bloomfield was a much-loved worker and racing character around the Club with many years of loyal service as track manager and general handyman keeping the facility in good and safe condition.

He was a true colourful racing identity who bought a smile to the face to all he encountered. Peter's racing experience and knowledge has been of great assistance to many a committee in general and individuals on the committee specifically.

The late Mr Peter Bloomfield

He and wife Carmel opened the doors of their stables for visiting trainers both overnight and on racedays when stalls where at a premium. All with a smile and was a great help promoting the Club.

Peter had had a long racing life which started when he left school in Leeton to work for leading trainer Peter Clancy where he received a strong education in riding.

Peter went to Sydney to gain experience as a trackwork rider for the legendary TJ Smith before returning to the area in 1966 to start his apprenticeship to John 'Digger' Carrol before transferred back to Sydney under care of master trainer Les Bridge.

The next chapter was moving to Wagga where he rode with success. In 1976 Peter trained for the first time at Ganmain before heading to Leeton. In 1985 Carmel and Peter set up in Narrandera on the course and their family and stable grew from there.

Peter then made a comeback as a jockey with Carmel getting her trainer's licence. In 1986 Peter retired permanently and took out a trainer's licence and continued to build up the infrastructure of his stables the number of horses in work before retiring in January 2018.

His family all had exposure to horses in some way with Andrew a leading jockey in the Southern Districts. Shane was an accomplished track rider before following his dad, grandfather and great grandfather into training.

Uncle Wayne Carroll is also a successful trainer and grandson Kye recently won his first race as a harness driver. Peter and Carmel instilled a great work ethic in their family for which we are sure they are very proud.

Rest in peace Peter and thank you for all your work and support of NRC and racing all around. The Club and racing in our area will be the poorer for Peter's passing.

Narrandera Race Club would like extend our sincere condolences to Carmel Bloomfield and the greater family on the sad passing of Peter."
