Racing NSW has been informed of the passing of Bathurst-based jockey, Mr Alan Barton aged 57.
Mr Barton rode mainly at the picnics and kicked home 93 winners and 275 placegetters.
One of Alan's career highlights was winning aboard Goodfa at Royal Randwick when the course hosted a picnic race meeting on Melbourne Cup Day of 2012.
His last winner was Dobe Super at Mudgee in June 2020. Among Alan's many winners were:
Red Marauder (won three races including two at Gosford as well as the Bedgerabong Cup)
Zaphod (won three races including the Come-by-Chance Picnic Cup, Bligh Picnic Cup (at Mudgee) and the Boorowa Picnic Cup
Feng Shui (won three races)
Rise Me Up (won three races)
Born to Power (won two races including the Gosford Picnic Cup)
Attilius (won two races including the Gosford Picnic Cup and a race at Bong Bong)
Centabeel (won the Come-by-Chance Picnic Cup and Bourke Picnic Cup)
Alan also worked as a trackwork rider for Max Lees for many years.
“Alan and I go back decades and he rode for me for a very long time,” said trainer Paul Theobald.
“Alan was an exceptional horseman and rider; he rode my horses in trackwork and that made all the difference.
“I don’t like legging up a jockey when they don’t know the horse, but when Alan was in the saddle, I didn’t have to give him instructions as he just knew what to do.”
