Tully Goes For Gold In Wagga's Ted Ryder Cup (Friday)

By Graeme White

Tullys Gold ($6.50 on TAB) – an all the way winner of the Ted Ryder Cup Prelude – is capable and ready to complete the double at Wagga on Friday, according to trainer Craig Weeding.

“He has drawn a touch wider than what he did in the preview when he led all of the way,” Weeding said.

"He has the speed to overcome the draw (barrier eight) and he has come on a bit more since his last run.

“I was really pleased to see him run straight last start because he was hanging inwards at times especially the Victorian way of racing.

“He also appreciated being back on top of a good surface last start after racing mostly on wet tracks which aren’t really suitable for him.”

Tullys Gold is rated one of the main chances in the $36,000 Lucas Road Sealing Ted Ryder Cup (1600m) where past winners Nieces And Nephews (2021-$5.50) and Upper House (2020-$9) are again in contention.

Wagga favourite Another One ($3.10) will back-up after leading and finishing unplaced at Flemington last Saturday over 1600 metres.

Trainer Gary Colvin captured the 2009 Ted Ryder Cup with Irish Key and has a terrific chance of winning another with his stable star.

Another One won the Country Championships Final at Randwick in April and is the reigning SDRA horse of the year.

Colvin was disappointed Another One led at Flemington and felt the winner of over $800,000 can hit back.

“It’s the first time I have backed him up so soon. He is going for a spell after this, he has pulled up well, and the race is on his home track just across the road,” he said.

“I know one thing – he won’t be leading. He is an easy horse to ride and I will be telling Jett (Stanley) to position up just behind the speed from the rails draw.

“He is an adaptable horse. It’s a hard race and I’m not expecting him to just go out there and win. Weight stops trains and he does have 61 kilograms after the claim.”

Another One has won the past two Country Championships qualifiers at Wagga where his record reads four wins and three placings from seven starts.

Blesk ($10) and Mr Gee ($10) bring new form into the region for their current trainers. Mr Gee will be having his first start for Tim Donnelly after doing the majority of his racing in Sydney with the John O’Shea stable.

Mr Gee is raced by Neil Werrett of Black Caviar fame and is the winner of five races. Blesk was also formerly with the O’Shea stable and has had two unplaced starts for current trainer Geoff Duryea.

The Corowa trainer captured the Wagga Town Plate with Front Page in May before he went on to win The Kosciuszko at Randwick.

Nieces And Nephews is racing in peak form with recent wins in the Fred Cooper Cup, Gundagai Hair Of The Dog Cup and Cooma Cup.

Young apprentice jockey Ryan Bradley has been aboard in his past two wins and his 4kg claim will reduce the galloper’s weight to 54.5kg.

Nieces And Nephews will break through $200,000 in prizemoney if he is successful.
