The curtain will shortly fall on the career of Madison Point – one of trainer Rob Potter’s favourite horses – and he hopes the veteran can go out a winner in one of his final three starts.
Madison Point ($10 on TAB) – a prolific winner who has provided some fond memories for his owners – is one of four starters Potter will have racing at the Sapphire Coast on Thursday.
He also had Craving Magic resuming in the opening race (ran 2nd), luckless last start placegetter Rhumbadu (was unplaced) and topweight I’m Not Leaving ($3.40 equal favourite) also kicking off a new campaign.
But it’s Madison Point that Potters wants to see bow out in style with apprentice jockey Damon Budler aboard from gate one.
“He has been a terrific horse for the owners. We paid $4000 for him and he has won $150,000 with several wins at Sky 1 meetings and a couple at the picnics,” he said.
“You would love to have a stable full of horses like him – he give his best every time and I think he can run top three.
“All of my horses are capable of running in the placings if we can get a win or two then even better.”
Madison Point will have two mote starts after today in the Cooma Cup and Bong Bong Picnic Cup with Potter adding he will have a active life in retirement.
“He will be the perfect horse for eventing and things like that,” he said. “You can’t buy the fun he has given us.”
Potter has the best winning strike-rate at the Sapphire Coast in the past 12 months with seven winners and three seconds from 19 starters.
Trainer Nick Olive had All Astern resume (finished 4th) against Rhumbadu in the Class 1 (1000m) after being off the scene for several months.
She won her latest start at Canberra in March and proved she was close to her best when a strong third behind stablemate Kimberley Secrets.
The mare had bone chips removed since her last start and her trial was six weeks ago prior to her return today.
