Time's Right For Kelly And Kayz's Highway Debut

By Ray Hickson

With six racehorses on his hands and a job managing a cattle property, trainer Paul Kelly’s days can be quite long but he clearly has plenty of time for lightly raced filly Kayz Time.

Trainer Paul Kelly

The three-year-old will be Kelly’s first TAB Highway (1300m) runner when she heads to Rosehill on Saturday to face her biggest test following two wins from three starts.

She came to Kelly late last year unraced as owner Brian Hayne, who he trained another horse for, wanted to move the filly closer to home and the only way has been up since then.

“She’s got a bit of upside about her,’’ Kelly said.

“She was out at Scone for a little while, she kept going sore and Brian got in touch with me and said could I give this one a crack.”

Kelly, 47, has been in the background of racing for quite a while. He ran a training and breaking business and was a strapper for Taree trainer Wayne Wilkes.

He trained as an owner-trainer prior to getting his full license around 18 months ago.

Kayz Time, $10 with TAB on Wednesday, was unwanted in betting when she made her debut at Taree on January 7 but put the writing on the wall with a fourth placing beaten just two lengths.

She notched her maiden win at Port Macquarie 12 days later, leading all the way to a four length win then repeated the dose coming from just off the speed in a Class 1 at Taree another 12 days later.

At this point it’s fair to say Kelly isn’t sure how good the filly is so what better way to find out than by coming to Sydney.

“It was do we go one more in the country or put her out, she’s really topped out fitness wise after that last run at Taree but she just keeps on giving me pluses all the time,’’ he said.

“We thought we’d give her experience down in Sydney for a day and see how she takes it.

“Looking at it to start with I thought it might be a bit strong, it’s a Class 3 with some good horses in it, but she can go around.”

While he toyed with sending the horse for a break, Kelly said he’s been pleased with how well she’s recovered from each run and continues to hold her condition.

Tom Sherry has been booked to ride Kayz Time in the Highway and Kelly was rapt to draw barrier two around the Rosehill circuit which will allow her the chance to land on speed without doing too much work.

“She can punch out and go forward but her last race, the 1300m, was a real good example of what she can do,’’ he said.

Kayz Time wins at Taree on January 31

“She had a gallop on the course proper at Taree and I said to a bloke who gives me a hand she might be one of these ones that keeps giving.

“You don’t have to do a great deal with her but she’s a really good doer. I spend a lot of the time making sure she doesn’t eat too much.”
