Racing Mates Brings Racing Community Together At Albury

The latest Racing Mates BBQ get-together held at Albury Race Club’s Country Championships Showcase race meeting on Sunday 18th February has been hailed a success after members of the racing community came together.

Founded by Racing NSW in 2016, Racing Mates hosts regular gatherings across New South Wales to raise mental health awareness and promote support programs that are available to participants.

At Albury races were (L-R): Emma Ly, Alysha Warren, Pat Webster, Holly Durnan & Teighan Worsnop

Ambassador Pat Webster hosted the latest event for Southern Districts participants which has been branded a success by many for ‘giving back’ to the Racing Industry.

“Sitting down and having a chat can make all the difference and it’s important that we stop and have a yarn to make sure that everyone is doing OK,” Pat Webster said.

“It’s all about encouraging participants to talk to each other which is most important.

“Anyone out there who is struggling is more likely to reach out to a trusted peer or colleague for support and our Racing Mates gatherings can help start that conversation with those who need it most.”

Pat and his wife Christine hosted a BBQ and a cup of tea, with Stablehands, Trainers and Jockeys getting together for a chat and a short break from raceday duties.

Albury Race Club praised Racing Mates for supporting participants, which was well-supported by locals.

“We were very pleased the day was a success, despite the hot weather,” Albury Race Club CEO, Steve Hetherton said.

“Albury Race Club was proud to play a part in hosting a Racing Mates get-together and Pat is the right person to lead the program.

“We look forward to hosting Racing Mates events again in future and supporting this great cause.”

Visiting jockey Craig Williams was among the Racing Mates supporters on the day and celebrated two of his victories, including the feature SDRA Country Championships race, sporting the Racing Mates colours.

“Racing Mates is a fantastic initiative by Racing NSW,” Williams said. “It’s great that they are recognising causes outside racing which raises awareness for families who need it most.”

Racing Mates can assist in providing the link between those in need and the required support and the program has access to clinical psychologists, counsellors and assistance hotlines which are essential.
