Neil Evans's Tips For Tuesday's Goulburn Race Meeting

By Neil Evans

Track is rated a Heavy 10 with the rail out 6m the entire circumference. Partly cloudy with the slight chance of a shower on Tuesday.

Race 1 (12:30pm) GOULBURN SOLDIERS CLUB CLASS 1 HANDICAP (900m)

We open up over the short course on a surface that will remain deep in the heavy range. Hard to go past No Nay Never two-year-old filly 3. Nomara ($2.25 favourite on TAB) who progresses off a dominant provincial maiden win at her second start. Ran good time that day on a firm surface and is bred to be even better advantaged in this very heavy going.

Dangers: Improving 1. Chalkley ($4.20) wasn't beaten far at this track in a BM 58 first-up for nearly six months and has shown enough so far on rain-affected going. Another improver is filly 5. Awesome Audrey ($6.50) who can peak in fitness third-up, while Your Song filly 6. Little River Rose ($6) is third-up coming out of that same Moruya race as the former, and also handles this type of going.

How to play it: Nomara to win
Odds and Evens: Odds

Race 2 (1:05pm) GOULPRO BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP (2140m)

Moderate and tricky staying race with little separating the leading few on this surface. Tough four-year-old 1. Last Quest ($2.80 fav) jumps up significantly in distance at the right time deep into his current prep. Liked the way he charged home last start in a similar grade and in a thinner race, is well placed in these conditions.

Dangers: Country six-year-old 2. Taliano ($3.30) has a poor winning strike rate and has never won from 12 attempts in heavy ground, but often without luck and not for the want of trying. Has beaten all but the winner five times on heavy and placed 14 times from 36 starts. Gets serious weight relief stepping out sharply to the longer journey third-up, and he'll be running home at the end. Include in exotics local five-year-old 4. Judicator ($4.80) and improving 5. Secadia ($5) who likes it wet.

How to play it: Last Quest to win
Odds and Evens: Split

Race 3 (1:40pm) TAB.COM.AU MAIDEN HANDICAP (1400m)

Metro filly 7. Seany's Girl ($4.40) is yet to run a place from five starts, but this shapes as a nice peak race second-up in her second prep. Always tackling deeper provincial opposition last time around and she's never been better placed in a country maiden on the limit weight.

Dangers: Randwick filly 3. Wingstofly ($2.30 fav) will be hard to hold out coming back from metropolitan level second-up. Expect a much improved run from provincial filly 4. The Halo ($6) who finally finds a weaker country race and generally is better advantaged on wet tracks, while 2. Zambrero ($3.90), resuming behind two progressive trials, heads the rest.

How to play it: Seany's Girl to win and trifecta 3,7/2,3,4,7/2,3,4,7
Odds and Evens: Split

Race 4 (2:20pm) GOULBURN MULWAREE COUNCIL MAIDEN PLATE (1600m)

Still with the maidens over a mile and this sets up well for Kermadec filly 8. Stellar Moment ($5.50) jumping to the mile at just her second start. Only worked home fairly on debut at Wyong, but she had previously trialled strongly up to 1200m on rain-affected ground and desperately wants a longer trip, being out of a Zabeel mare. Will settle well back and come with a big finish.

Dangers: Promising three-year-old 4. Rockierro ($3 fav) is a natural threat second-up after boxing on for a long way at Kembla in his first run for 10 months, although unproven in the conditions. Improving three-year-old 2. Brynner ($4.80) was right behind the former 17 days ago and found a winnable race second-up, but also a query in heavy going. Hellbent two-year-old colt 10. Air Bentley ($3.80) should also appreciate more ground after running home late at Hawkesbury on debut and the second horse from that race then bolted in at Newcastle on Saturday in Heavy 9 ground.

How to play it: Stellar Moment each-way
Odds and Evens: Evens a special

Race 5 (2:55pm) GOULBURN POST BENCHMARK 66 HANDICAP (1200m)

In a wide and competitive race, like the value about under-rated home track three-year-old 9. Charlemagne ($6) who can notch a second win in four starts stepping up in class fourth-up. Powered home to miss narrowly in a BM 58, carries 4kg less for this tougher test and will handle the going.

Dangers: Trained on the track, expect 2. Easy Rosie ($4.60 equal fav) to be ridden much closer dropping in grade behind a two-month break after failing to run on a much tougher Highway. Watch the betting closely on Hawkesbury-based 3. Enjolras ($6.50) who returns as a gelding with blinkers off for the first time, and is fit enough behind two sharp trials. Lightly raced six-year-old 5. Reoffender ($4.60 eq fav) hit the line hard to beat all bar the winner here first-up off a long spell, but more depth in this.

How to play it: Charlemagne to win and box trifecta 2,3,5,9
Odds and Evens: Odds

Race 6 (3:35pm) COMPLETE PLUMBING SOLUTIONS BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP (1400m)

Exciting three-year-old 2. Beer Palace ($2.60 fav) only beat four runners on debut in very heavy ground at Newcastle, but the way he swept home and trounced a well fancied one running away, suggests he can repeat the dose in this. Had already spent plenty of time at the trials on wet tracks and despite the weight hike, he's headed for bigger assignments than this.

Dangers: Provincial four-year-old 7. Victory At Omaha ($6) led all the way for an easy maiden win in soft ground two starts back. Lightly raced provincial three-year-old 9. Steve Steve Steve ($7.50) didn't have much luck second-up and he can peak here down in weight, while Canberra mare 1. Stand Your Ground ($9) is best of the rest, with a 4kg claimer off-setting the big weight.

How to play it: Beer Palace to win
Odds and Evens: Split

Race 7 (4:10pm) ILLAWARRA PRODUCTION SERVICES MAIDEN HANDICAP (1000m)

We close the meeting with a very testing maiden sprint and several debutantes on show. Keen on improving and lightly raced metro filly 7. Privatisation ($3.20 fav) second-up for the powerful Maher-Eustace yard. Worked home okay fresh in a much classier race at Gosford when hard in the market and is supremely bred for the ground being by Extreme Choice and out of a Pins mare.

Dangers: Plenty of them headed by local four-year-old 1. Master Joe ($4) who kept chasing well on debut here when backed at double-figure odds, although a query getting back from the inside draw in these conditions. Well bred metro three-year-old 2. Boston City ($3.60) is a big market watch. Has been given nearly seven weeks via a nice trial win since dropping out at huge odds in a much tougher maiden on debut, and city stable has rung the gear changes. Keep safe Headwater two-year-old filly 8. Dehero ($9) who debuts off two improving trials.

How to play it: Privatisation to win
Odds and Evens: Split
