Neil Evans's Selections For Scone Races (Tuesday)

By Neil Evans

The track is rated a Good 4 with the rail in the True position.

Race 1 (12:45pm) SPB SCONE MAIDEN HANDICAP (1400M)

Tough Newcastle three-year-old 5. Sir Bawn ($2.60 favourite on TAB) was the best of things beaten fourth-up at Taree in heavy ground when edged out by a nose after covering a stack of ground. Seems to thrive on the quicker back-ups and can make amends here fifth-up with a very strong rider going on.

Dangers: Rival Novacastrian filly 4. Galaxy Belle ($3.50) returned with a solid closing effort. Bred to get much further and this is a nice follow-up race. Local mare 8. More Oomph ($8) made up an enormous amount of ground at Tamworth over this trip and will relish being back at home on the bigger course from a nice trailing draw. Gap to the rest headed by stablemate three-year-old to the former 9. Reach Beyond ($5) who can settle better and improve second-up with blinkers off.

How to play it: Sir Bawn to win and box trifecta 4,5,8
Odds and Evens: Split

Race 2 (1:25pm) MIDDLEBROOK VALLEY LODGE MAIDEN PLATE (1700M)

Provincial three-year-old 1. Double Award ($2.60 equal fav) is ready to win fourth-up. Has kept finding the line as the distances have risen, and peaks here first go at the track over an ideal journey at set weights.

Dangers: Home track three-year-old 8. Sir Diamond ($2.60 eq fav) has been only fair in four runs this prep, but draws to get a cosy run on the inside and this isn't overly strong.

How to play it: Double Award to win
Odds and Evens: Split

Race 3 (2:05pm) ARTIST SARAH BISHOP MAIDEN PLATE (1100M)

Back in distance for an open sprint with some key ones on debut. One of them, three-year-old Headwater filly 7. Lady River ($3.40 fav) can start with a bang on her home track. Liked her trial when she tracked wide all the way and threw off any challenge under a nice hold.

Dangers: Watch the betting on two-year-old Real Impact provincial filly 14. Dawnburst ($7) who debuts off a string of quiet trials. Another first starter, Honor In War three-year-old 1. Kamikaze Kid ($5.50) parked off the speed in a trial and swept home for an easy win, but the opposition was inferior to that of the top selection and he was ridden out to the line. Has drawn the outside barrier. Included in exotics is 4. Sethlans ($10) first-up.

How to play it: Lady River to win
Odds and Evens: Split

Race 4 (2:45pm) HUNTER EQUINE CENTRE CLASS 3 HANDICAP (900M)

Very competitive dash here. Local three-year-old 8. Baiyka ($5) resumes and is drawn to land a lovely run on the speed. Looked sharp winning a recent trial and a significant pointer the race-fit and fancied stablemate has been withdrawn.

Dangers: Smart five-year-old short-courser 3. Deploys Alone ($5.50) is trained on the track and resumes off a nice forward trial. Gets in light after rookie rider's 4kg claim and normally fires on the fresh side. Provincial three-year-old 4. Isalute ($2.25 fav) is well placed, resuming from a soft draw and bolted in the second of two recent trials. Tamworth four-year-old 1. Halcyon House ($6.50) hasn't started since December and no public trials, but is a proven weight carrier and normally finds form early in the prep, while consistent local filly 7. Very Sharp ($7.50) resumes also with no official trials but has only missed a place twice in seven starts and best form is fresh.

How to play it: Baiyka each-way and first four 3,4,8/1,3,4,7,8/1,3,4,7,8/1,3,4,7,8
Odds and Evens: Split

Race 5 (3:20pm) ARIAT CLASS 1 HANDICAP (1100M)

Strong race for this grade with plenty of chances. Like three-year-old Newcastle filly 1. Dominant Lady ($4.40) who resumes. Drawn to park just off the speed with a trail and has been fitted with two progressive trials.

Dangers: Plenty of them headed by smart debut winner 4. Salire ($4.40) who has been given three weeks into his first run at home. Improving three-year-old 3. Taketheshot ($4 fav) worked home late third-up at this track and the winner then won again at Gunnedah on Sunday. Draws to get a soft run back in the field. Keep safe local mare 9. A Room Somewhere ($6) who has been right behind the winner in two runs this prep and comes through a good Class 2 form race.

How to play it: Dominant Lady to win
Odds and Evens: Split

Race 6 (3:55pm) STABLEWIZARD BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP (1600M)

Like home track mare 2. Holy Empress ($4.40) who is ready to win dropping back significantly in grade. Was close-up finding the line well in two runs before outclassed in the much stronger Group 3 Dark Jewel here on Cup day. Gets back up to her pet distance and can find the right trail off the fence.

Dangers: Hard fit five-year-old 5. Hidden Hills ($3.60 fav) is well placed back on a firm track. Draws to get a soft run behind the speed and was scratched from Port Macquarie on Monday to be saved for this. Capable four-year-old 3. Sapphires Son ($4.40) disappointed second-up but better suited returning to a bigger track, while 7. Lasting Grace ($4) resumed with a dominant Class 1 win in heavy ground, but this is tougher.

How to play it: Holy Empress to win and quinella 2 and 4
Odds and Evens: Evens

Race 7 (4:35pm) SCONE EQUINE HOSPITAL BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP (1200M)

Progressive and lightly raced home track three-year-old 5. Chaready ($3.60 fav) can make it two straight coming back a little in distance. Was stiff not to break through two runs back before charging late to claim his maiden here.

Dangers: Metro filly 12. Dawn Flight ($4.40) resumes off a steady synthetic trial. Smart four-year-old 1. From The Hip ($6.50) led all the way when resuming in a similar race, but up to a career-high weight and drawn very wide. Tough seven-year-old 4. Two Ducks Artie ($9.50) draws to get good cover back in the field, while last start BM 58 winner 2. Manangatang ($7.50) gets a soft run behind the speed.

How to play it: Chaready to win
Odds and Evens: Split

BEST BETS
R2 - 1. DOUBLE AWARD ($2.60)
R7 - 5. CHAREADY ($3.60)

BEST VALUE
R3 - 7. LADY RIVER ($3.40)
