Neil Evans's Selections For Port Macquarie Races (Monday)

By Neil Evans

The track is rated a Soft 6 with the rail in the True position.

Race 1 (12:15pm) SCHWEPPES MAIDEN HANDICAP (1500M)

Competitive middle distance opener with reasonable speed on. Progressive Coffs four-year-old 2. Lookonchina ($3.90 on TAB) is ready to peak third-up after hitting the line well in a handy maiden at Grafton. Draws to lead or take a sit right behind and likes it in soft range.

Dangers: Big watch on Fiorente four-year-old 1. Prince Six ($4) who resumes for a new country stable although unproven on rain-affected ground. Improving three-year-old 3. Hooyah ($2.80 favourite) is another one advantaged on soft going and finished well resuming, but may need one more run before peaking. Provincial three-year-old 4. Oakfield Warpaint ($5) will find this easier than his first two runs and blinkers go on. Was scratched from Gunnedah on Sunday to run here.

How to play it: Lookonchina to win and box trifecta 1,2,3,4
Odds and Evens: Split

Race 2 (12:50pm) STOWE AUSTRALIA BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP (2000M)

Plenty of chances here headed by local five-year-old 1. Flying Mojo ($3.20 fav) who has never raced better, finishing hard to win his last two around this grade. Right at home on rain-affected ground although he's been up for a long time and gets a further test from the handicapper climbing to 63.5kg.

Dangers: Home four-year-old 3. Schoona The Better ($4.20) made a mockery of a betting drift at Moree, charging home to make it two wins from his last three but more depth here and not well in at the weights, while 8. Apache Belle ($3.40) can be included in exotics.

How to play it: Flying Mojo to win
Odds and Evens: Split

Race 3 (1:25pm) BARRIER SIGNS MAIDEN PLATE (1200M)

Tricky affair with only moderate speed on. Provincial filly 8. Just Like Lisa ($5) can pounce second-up. Was well backed when working home into a place in her first run for six months and has been in the money in both soft track runs so far.

Dangers: Improving filly 12. Two Gems ($5) can peak fourth-up over this longer journey, while lightly raced two-year-old 13. Jet Pack ($3 fav) resumes for a new provincial stable off a solid trial with winkers coming off.

How to play it: Just Like Lisa each-way
Odds and Evens: Split

Race 4 (2:05pm) DE BORTOLI WINES MAIDEN PLATE (1000M)

Back to the shorter sprint. Improving filly 9. Not Taking It ($2.25 fav) has bounced to the front in two runs to start her career but has been run down both times. Gets weight relief and blinkers for the first time so appears the one to beat on an improving track.

Dangers: Watch the betting on resuming three-year-old 2. Mcnair ($5.50) who is bred for rain-affected ground and won a recent trial, while 7. A Tender Lady ($7) can improve at her second start.

How to play it: Not Taking It to win
Odds and Evens: Split

Race 5 (2:40pm) JOHN OXLEY MOTORS BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP (1000M)

Big field and good speed in this one. Provincial filly 4. Black Jacamar ($3.10 fav) drops back in trip third-up with blinkers importantly going on. Bounced to the front and kept going first-up before being out-gunned late over 1200m. Is the superior soft tracker in the race and only needs luck to get across from a tricky barrier.

Dangers: Consistent three-year-old 9. Poita ($7) is a clear threat from a good draw after sweeping home for an impressive first-up win. Both wins so far have come on rain-affected ground. Tough three-year-old 1. Alpha Go ($4.40) has been freshened up for the drop back in distance after sticking on strong in a similar race at Armidale. Local filly 12. Golden Fantasy ($6) finally broke through here after a string of close placings and will push forward again from a wider gate. Honest mare 6. Makana ($8) will need the breaks to tuck in from a wide gate, but she's a good line-finder when chasing a solid tempo.

How to play it: Black Jacamar to win and trifecta 1,4,9/1,4,6,9,12/1,4,6,9,12
Odds and Evens: Split

Race 6 (3:15pm) FASTPLAST BUILDING SUPPLIES CLASS 2 HANDICAP (1500M)

Progressive three-year-old 2. Oakfield Prince ($2.90 fav) boxed on okay from the front second-up, and while this is tougher, he carries 3kg less.

Dangers: Improving five-year-old 5. Greenskeeper ($7) was right behind the top selection third-up in that Class 3 at this track and draws to get good cover. Consistent four-year-old 9. Dr Copper ($4.20) drops significantly in weight and draws the inside but would still need to find a length or two against a few of these.

How to play it: Oakfield prince to win and quinella 2 and 5
Odds and Evens: Split

Race 7 (3:50pm) WAUCHOPE CUP SUNDAY 20 JUNE CLASS 1 HANDICAP (1200M)

Another competitive affair. Doubt there's a better weighted runner all meeting than promising Wandjina filly 7. Paxos Miss ($2.70 fav) who can make it two straight this prep. Tracked the speed before careering home for an easy win here first-up in very good time for the soft rating and carries only 55kg after the claim.

Dangers: Got plenty of time for home track filly 5. Oh Say ($6.50) who hasn't missed a place in four runs, including a maiden win here. Will settle back from the wide barrier but watch for her charging late. Capable three-year-old 1. Greenheart ($7) is weighted to his best but has found the line okay in his last two from just off the speed. Improving filly 4. Impulse Control ($4.80) couldn't run them down first-up here but blinkers are back on, although will have to get over from a wide draw. Loved how three-year-old 2. Son Of Sampson ($6) has come back this trip, hitting the line strongly in two runs from well back but carting 59.5kg from a wide barrier is a big ask.

How to play it: Paxos Miss to win
Odds and Evens: Odds

Race 8 (4:25pm) CARLTON DRY BENCHMARK 66 HANDICAP (1200M)

Typically strong and wide-open battle for this grade to finish with a stack of chances. Hard fit and well into his prep, provincial four-year-old 10. Two Up ($5.50) can make it two wins in succession. Worked home okay in Class 2 grade here when fancied at double-figure odds before putting a handy field to the sword here a fortnight ago, trouncing Black Jacamar who goes around as a big chance earlier in the meeting.

Dangers: Provincial filly 6. Glowing Red ($4.20 fav) is showing plenty of promise with two wins and two placings from only five starts. Rushed home for a smart second-up Class 2 win here before working home okay against deeper opposition at Scone. Drawn wide, but that may be some advantage late in the day. Tough four-year-old 5. Camp Rifle ($5) resumes from a handy draw and normally comes to hand quickly. Another Novacastrian in good form, 12. Quick Nick ($5) has won two of his last three although has to overcome a tricky draw in a tougher race, while watching the betting on 11. Dollson ($10) who resumes off a lengthy break without publicly trialling, but normally finds form quickly.

How to play it: Two Up each-way
Odds and Evens: Evens

BEST BETS
R4 9. NOT TAKING IT ($2.25)
R7 7. PAXOS MISS ($2.70)

BEST VALUE
R8 10. TWO UP ($5.50)
