Neil Evans' Tips For Wagga (Thursday)

By Neil Evans

Track Good 4 and rail out 5m from 1400m to WP and True the remainder

Race 1 2YO MAIDEN PLATE (1000m):

Small field of two-year-olds to get us underway, and local Palentino filly 8. Nymagee can open with a bang behind a quiet trial. Debuts with important gear additions, and stable renowned for striking new.

Dangers: Canberra filly 7. Nalabelle will improve on firmer ground 11 weeks after an even debut at home; while Headwater filly 6. Miss Wallflower can run into a place on debut.

How to play it: Nymagee to win. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 2 OPEN HCP (1400m):

An even field of honest gallopers. Tough seven-year-old 1. Intuition hasn't been missed by the handicapper with 62.5kg, but he's been competitive in deeper races, and is a proven weight carrier. Did his best work late in a superior metro field before not getting much room or luck getting through the traffic in the Bega Cup, and blinkers have been removed.

Dangers: Trained on the track, 3. Kurocaine can make it two straight deep into the prep after surging home to win a feature sprint here five weeks back in a blanket finish. Keeping safe seven-year-old 5. Mad As Zariz over further fourth-up; while provincial six-year-old 4. Zouologist drops in grade fourth-up.

How to play it: Intuition to win and trifecta 1,3/1,3,4,5/1,3,4,5. Odds and Evens: Odds

Race 3 BENCHMARK 66 HCP (1800m):

Ordinary race quality-wise for a Heat of the Stayers Series at this level, and naturally there's several chances. Albury mare 5. Sharlie has more progressive upside than the rest coming off a dominant fourth-up win in a lesser grade. Right at peak fitness with a nice 2kg weight drop, and no doubt she'll run out the extra trip strong.

Dangers: Improving 1. Hemmerle shoots for three straight after tracking the speed and sailing away for an easy win, and ready for this tougher test carrying 1kg less. Underrated Canberra mare 4. Larmour is drawn wide, but is hard fit and comes off a peak BM 58 win zooming home from the back. Included in exotics 7. Decker who drops in weight; and 9. Lady Kermadec who dropped out last start, but is much more effective when ridden with a sit.

How to play it: Sharlie each way. Odds and Evens: Odds

Race 4 MAIDEN HCP (1300m):

Another open battle headed by improving provincial mare 5. I Am Mighty who ran home okay from the back here at her third start. Draws to settle a bit closer this time over a further 100m, and she can open her account.

Dangers: Home track mare 12. Victory Idol stuck on well after leading first-up, and she can give another big sight from the inside barrier in a race of little depth; while 1. Bon Hombre and 2. Undisturbed fight out the minor end of the prize.

How to play it: I Am Mighty to win. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 5 MAIDEN HCP (1300m):

Progressive provincial four-year-old 2. Mancconi was very well backed third-up on the South Coast before charging late to only miss by a head. Extra 100m and bigger track look ideal, and there's not much opposition here.

Dangers: Local mare 11. Perfect Sun hasn't been far away in three runs this prep, and he was rock solid in the market three weeks back in a race with more depth. Will have to slot in from an awkward draw, but gets a handy 3kg weight drop. Albury three-year-old 1. Bianco Vilano was good second-up here after parking just behind the speed, despite being unwanted in betting, although up in weight from a tougher draw. Lightly raced filly 6. Divine Moment steps up significantly in distance for her second start; while at big odds three-year-old 5. Jungle Fever is also looking for more ground at his third start.

How to play it: Mancconi to win and box exacta 1,2,11. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 6 COUNTRY C'SHIP PREVIEW CLASS 4 HCP (1200m):

Feature race on the program shapes ideally for home track five-year-old 1. Blitzar who can go back-to-back second-up. Charged home to win a feature sprint here fresh, and normally holds his form into the next run. Asked to carry 60kg, but loves it dry and last prep was beaten only over a length in a Randwick Highway.

Dangers: Emerging filly 9. Whenitrainsitpours comes off two strong on-speed runs here; and blinkers have been added; while both tough five-year-old 2. Halo Warrior first-up off a nine week break; and 8. Emma's Gift over more ground second-up; can run into a place.

How to play it: Blitzar to win. Odds and Evens: Odds

Race 7 MAIDEN PLATE (1600m):

Very open and testing maiden over the mile. As long as he can slot in from an awkward draw, there's a sense of timing here about progressive well-bred local 5. Lumber Dream third-up. Has hit the line late in both runs this prep, and bursting for more ground being out of a Group 1 Oaks and four-time Group 2 winner in Lights Of Heaven.

Dangers: Kembla four-year-old 4. Iverson stays at this distance after a close-up effort on the Sapphire Coast when dropping back from 2100m. Will need to slot in from a tough gate, but should find this a bit easier. Home track mare 10. Al Murree can improve further at her third start with winkers added. Expect a peak run at fifth start from three-year-old 8. Shiny Rock who finds a weaker race; while included in trifectas and first fours honest five-year-old 6. Oahu Gaze fifth-up; and provincial mare 11. At Midnight who is searching for this distance deep into the prep.

How to play it: Lumber Dream to win. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 8 BENCHMARK 58 HCP (1000m):

This stacks up nicely for talented Albury three-year-old 4. Flying Sultan who returns off a two month spell and smart trial win for only his third start. Last time out defied a betting drift to easily lead from barrier to box, and drew to take control again.

Dangers: Provincial five-year-old 6. Archie's A Star was strong enough through the line resuming in a similar race at Moruya, and only win so far from 12 starts came second-up. Keep safe 1. Platara who shoots for three straight wins a month between runs, although up sharply to a hefty 61kg; while 13. Wonderful Phrase is best of the rest.

How to play it: Flying Sultan to win. Odds and Evens: Evens

Race 9 3YO & UP MAIDEN PLATE (1000m):

The maidens wrap up the card, with most being lightly raced. Like the value about Canberra filly 10. Ella Amelia who returns for just her third start after more than seven months away. Was well in the market both runs last prep, and stable loves to get them ready from a long way out without officially trialling.

Dangers: Provincial four-year-old 1. Cuban Granchico resumes for only his third start, and looms as the class runner. Beat all bar the winner in two runs last prep, but will need to fly the barriers having drawn off the track. Gap to the rest headed by 9. Wilful Spirit who resumes with blinkers back on; while 7. Cocoshio second-up with gear changes; and 15. Smart Lass who is hard fit; both go in wider exotic plays.

How to play it: Ella Amelia each way. Odds and Evens: Split

BEST BETS:
R4 5. I AM MIGHTY
R8 4. FLYING SULTAN

BEST VALUE:
R3 5. SHARLIE
