Neil Evans' Tips For Wagga (Thursday)

By Neil Evans

Track Good 4 and rail out 6m from 1400m to WP & True the remainder

Race 1 - 1:50PM WAGGA GOLD CUP ON SALE JAN 29 CG&E MAIDEN PLATE (1200 METRES)

9. Jackpot Star is a three-year-old son of Starcraft, well placed and well drawn to strike on debut. Hasn't been seen for nine months since trialling well at Canberra, but given plenty of time and reportedly been working well, with a senior jockey taking the ride. 6. Bomerton did his best work late on debut here on the Riverside track, and fitter now can run into the finish. Victorian raider 5. Amber Star also improves off a fair debut at Corowa; while at bigger odds 8. If You Can also from over the border is in the hunt for minor money.

Race 2 - 2:25PM RON CROUCH TRANSPORT F&M MAIDEN PLATE (1200 METRES)

12. Miss Fennell is a lightly raced filly by Press Statement trained on the course, and emerges as the clear one to beat after charging home as a short-priced favourite to miss narrowly first-up on the Riverside track. Given 16 days between runs, naturally fitter, and back on the more suitable course proper, all adds up to a breakthrough win. 5. Roulottie reloads off a 10 week break from the inside draw with blinkers going on, having missed by a neck here in spring. 11. Deodee trained on the course, and off a freshen-up is on the next line. Gap to the rest.

Race 3 - 3:05PM JRC ELECTRICAL SERVICES BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP (1000 METRES)

2. Hold is a progressive and talented Canberra mare who is primed to win third-up, drawn to get crucial cover back in the field. Resumed with an eye-catching late effort in tougher CL2 Highway company at Rosehill before dropping to this level and monitoring home to finish close-up in a race with more depth. Carries the same weight here with winkers back on, and only needs clear air from the 350m to charge over them. Was also scratched from a deeper race at Moruya to be saved for this. 4. Keysborough is a consistent home tracker, and must be respected from a low draw. So too capable Albury mare 3. Altrove who tackled a stronger grade last start after a BM 58 win first-up, and is drawn to get a soft run right behind the speed. 7. Katie Express is hard fit and on a quick back-up is a must for trifecta and first fours.

Race 4 - 3:40PM WAGGA WAGGA EARLY YEARS LEARNING CENTRE CG&E C1 (1200M)

2. He's My Warrior is very genuine, and can go one better second-up after working home nicely in a deeper Class 1 on the Riverside track 16 days ago. Shrewd Albury sprinting stable has removed the blinkers, and his only win so far came at this stage of the prep. Will relish the course proper settling well off speed from the wider gate. Over the odds is lightly raced home tracker 4. Fighting Zed peaking fourth-up. 1. Our Boy Beau crosses the border after a solid first-up run. 5. Captain Nay can improve sharply fourth-up, settling closer from a lower draw. Gap to the rest headed by 6. Newyork Missile resuming with no official trials.

Race 5 - 4:20PM SOUTHERN CROSS AUSTEREO BM58 - HEAT OF RISING STAR (1600M)

3. Warpainted is a locally trained three-year-old in good hands, tracking to go back-to-back third-up at good odds. Improved sharply to beat a handy maiden field at Corowa, running home from well back, and suited now up to the mile and settling closer from a low draw. 2. Artist who fought hard to lead all the way at Queanbeyan second-up, and preferred here to Moruya, heads a string of challengers. 8. Soul Taker has been in and around the money all prep, and draws to get a cosy run on the inside, but still a shade under the odds. 4. Mickey's Pride looks over the mark fourth-up with significant weight relief. 6. Mayfair Hotel is trained on the track, drops back to her best distance, and again gets in nicely at the weights after the claim. 1. Ledecky's Dream rising in distance fifth-up goes into exotic plays.

How to play it: Warpainted to win

Race 6 - 4:55PM DELTA STAR DESIGNS MAIDEN HANDICAP (1400 METRES)

3. Over To Win is a lightly raced and improving Canberra three-year-old who can peak at his fourth start getting up to 1400m. Ran home well in a handy maiden at home two runs ago before boxing on okay when unsuited in front last start. Well placed at the weights after the jockey's claim, and gets his chance here to take a trail from a handy draw in a race weak in depth. 1. Shine Like It Does is a lightly raced mare who steps up a furlong in trip after a solid return at Goulburn. 7. Launch Mode did his best work late here, resuming in a Super Maiden, but will likely be forced a long way back from a wide draw. 15. Hot Toddy is honest and fit, and suited over this longer trip. Watch the betting on local mare 6. Smart Colour back on the course proper for her second start.

How to play it: Over To Win to win

Race 7 - 5:30PM BOWYER REFRIGERATION & AIR COND. F&M CLASS 1 (1200 METRES)

2. Divron is an honest home track mare, and strong value deep into her prep behind a tough Super Maiden win. Draws to find a handy trail right on speed. 4. Loch Erin improves back on the course proper. 5. Oimbari coming back in distance; and 6. Rockbarton Shout third-up behind a dominant win in weak maiden company; can both run into minor money.

How to play it: Divron to win
