Neil Evans' Tips For Wagga (Sunday)

By Neil Evans

Track likely Heavy 8 and rail out 8m from 1400m to WP & True the remainder

Race 1 MAIDEN HCP (1300m):

We open up with the maidens on another rain-hit surface. Keen on Canberra filly 5. My Girona who can peak over this journey third-up. Did best work late behind a dominant and smart winner over the Albury carnival, and effective enough in wet ground.

Dangers: Resuming provincial filly 12. So I See is a clear threat first-up from the inside draw. Showed enough hitting the line during an early spring prep last time, and tackles the thinnest race of her short career. Keep safe at odds 10. Perfect Sun with blinkers back on; while 4. Brilliant Speed is a must for exotics third-up with a little weight drop.

How to play it: My Girona to win and quinella 5 and 12
Odds and Evens: Split

Race 2 CLASS 2 HCP (1000m):

Competitive race, although another Canberra visitor 9. Mooshaka rates on top, second-up off a lengthy break. Charged home late resuming at Queanbeyan carrying 1kg more, and only previous win so far came comfortably second-up at this track.

Dangers: Progressive Albury four-year-old 3. My Bold Boy continues the quick back-ups shooting for three straight wins. Ran them off their legs at Albury before digging in from the front on a heavy track at Gundagai, and significantly stays at the trip for this step up in grade; while big-finishing 5. Openhimup is best of the rest after hitting the line from a mile back against the pattern at Albury over the carnival.

How to play it: Mooshaka to win
Odds and Evens: Odds

Race 3 COLTS, GELDINGS & ENTIRES MAIDEN PLATE (1000m):

The early market might just have the two fancies the wrong way around here. Provincial three-year-old 10. Espirito was gallant on debut chasing home a dominant winner on a leader's track at Albury when a rock-solid favourite. Will come on strong from that run, and had previously trialled well on heavy ground.

Dangers: Rival Kembla three-year-old 12. Verbek found the line okay in a deeper maiden at Hawkesbury, and has placed seven times in 10 starts generally across tougher opposition. Also bred to get through rain-affected going, although threatens to go around under the odds. Gap top the rest headed by home track four-year-old 3. My Boy Mo who is fourth-up.

How to play it: Espirito to win
Odds and Evens: Evens

Race 4 BENCHMARK 66 HCP (1800m):

Another heat of the Wagga Stayers Series stacks up nicely for improving provincial three-year-old 7. Moon Stories third-up. Carried 1.5kg more powering home in soft ground to beat a handy Class 1 field over the mile, and is bred to handle heavy going and relish the bigger circuit.

Dangers: Not much between the top selection and tough stablemate 6. Foxtrot Bravo who was no match for a slick winner last start, but generally finds the line, and drops in weight from a soft draw. Honest mare 8. Sharlie worked home okay in a weaker grade at Albury, and while this is tougher, she also drops sharply in weight and draws to get a soft run. Keep safe 3. Wise Dragon who stuck on okay after doing it tough from the gate in weaker class over the Albury carnival; while both last start third-up winners 2. No Question and 9. Dolphina; go in trifectas and first fours.

How to play it: Moon Stories to win
Odds and Evens: Split

Race 5 CLASS 2 HCP (1400m);

Tricky races with a few chances. Like improving Canberra filly 8. Anchorage fourth-up after surging home late to narrowly miss in a similar grade at Gundagai. Drawn out but gets key gear changes.

Dangers: Big watch on local mare 3. Sumdeel who resumes without publicly trialling, but comes to hand quickly and was competitive in Highway grade up to 1800m last prep. Wodonga five-year-old 1. Broadside Armour rarely shirks the task, and will find this a little easier than his last couple; while 5. Bianco Vilano and 4. Albert's Melody are both capable of running into the placings.

How to play it: Anchorage each way
Odds and Evens: Split

Race 6 BENCHMARK 58 HCP (1200m):

Local five-year-old 5. Gironde is hard fit and well placed in a race severely weakened by scratchings. Charged home from a mile back in a similar graded race on Albury Cup day.

Dangers: Tough eight-year-old 2. Landmine draws gets a charmed run, and is a consistent weight carrier; while 9. Zarsnip is the best of the rest.

How to play it: Gironde to win
Odds and Evens: Split

Race 7 FILLIES & MARES MAIDEN PLATE (1000m):

We close the meeting with a stack of confidence aboard highly-touted Your Song filly 10. Miss Kirribilli who is trained on the track, and makes her debut iff a smart open class trial a month back.

Dangers: South Coast filly 11. Alpine Lady is by Press Statement and starts her career behind a quiet trial; while 4. Improper and 9. Hero Express can both be included in exotics.

How to play it: Miss Kirribilli to win
Odds and Evens: Split

BEST BETS:
R4 7. MOON STORIES
R6 5. GIRONDE

BEST VALUE:
R5 8. ANCHORAGE
