Neil Evans' Tips For Wagga (Friday)

By Neil Evans

Track Good 4 and rail out 5m from 1400m to WP & true the remainder:

Race 1 CLASS 3 HCP (1000m):

A small sprint field to get us under way. Flying Dubbo four-year-old 2. Wilbury has never raced better, winning three on the bounce, and is the raging one to beat, especially with the stablemate coming out. Was dominant from on speed in two country wins before digging in late to claim a CL2 Highway at Rosehill. Naturally up 3.5kg off that win; but drawn to roll forward effectively again.

Dangers: Gap to the rest headed by Victorian raider 5. Triumphantly who has won two from four this prep, and drops back from metro company; while another one from over the border 7. Toronto Rain is the best of the rest.

How to play it: Wilbury to win

Race 2 MAIDEN PLATE (1400m):

Back in Maiden class here over further, and it shapes as the right breakthrough race for improving Canberra filly 11. Single Beat fifth-up in only her second prep. Liked the way she attacked the line when ridden a bit quieter at home last start, and she's well treated under the set weight conditions from the inside draw.

Dangers: Another gradual improver is 5. Ten Feathers who has beaten all but the winner in two of his last three, although back in distance on a five day back-up must be a query. Over the odds is home tracker 2. Launch Mode third-up from a soft draw over a furlong further.

How to play it: Single Beat to win

Race 3 CLASS 2 HCP (1200m):

Not much between a few of these in a fairly evenly graded sprint. Settled on locally trained & progressive three-year-old 2. Underpants who can strike second-up off a nine week freshen. Came from last to be beaten under a length here only 10 days ago when backed from $3.20 into $2.70. Likely to park a bit closer in the run from a softer draw, and only needs to get a clear run home from the 400m. The one to beat.

Dangers: Rival local 1. Allaboutroy gets a soft run from the fence draw, and comes off a strong closing effort in deeper Highway company fourth-up. Hard to fathom why last start and progressive CL1 winner 5. Rubi Air was nearly double figure odds in early betting, despite a rise in depth. Covered plenty of ground to win that day in tough fashion, and the extra trip is only a plus. Must keep safe ultra consistent 6. Super Sunny Seeya who draws to get a nice trail just off the speed; while both third-up CL1 winner 4. Doogan's Design; and progressive mare 7. You're On Mute also back from a gallant Highway run; can add value into trifecta and first four bets.

How to play it: Underpants to win

Race 4 BENCHMARK 66 HCP (2000m):

Well bred home tracker 10. Australian Harbour has been disappointing in four runs this prep, including failing to run a place as an odds-on fancy, but he can abruptly get into punters' good books here, with regular jockey Danny Beasley back aboard. Has led for a long way in his last two, and while this is a shade deeper in quality, he's drawn to get the ideal on speed run dropping down to the limit weight.

Dangers: Plenty of them in what may be a muddling run affair, but tough 3. Lumber Dream represents value up a furlong in distance and deep into the current prep. Watch the betting on stablemate to the top selection 5. Duchy Of Cornwall who ran home hard fresh off a seven week break, and also suited by the rise in trip. Be surprised if one of those three doesn't win; but 6. Old Gregg who is hard fit from a low draw; and at bigger odds 4. Abseiler up in distance fifth-up; are well capable of running into the minor money.

How to play it: Australian Harbour to win

Race 5 TED RYDER CUP (1600m):

Now for an open feature over the mile, and keen on tough weight carrier 2. Ruban Bleu with blinkers coming off. Tackled tougher metro races in late spring, and was less than a length from the winner in a feature BM 80 at Goulburn only as week ago.

Dangers: Watch the market on 7. Ferlaxing who hops the border having placed in the Wodonga Cup two starts back; while 5. Dream Inherit is also in the each way mix coming off a fast-finishing win in weaker grade here on the Riverside course. Include 3. Kiptanui and 6. Almost Persuaded if you're playing the trifecta and first fours.

How to play it: Ruban Bleu to win

Race 6 OPEN HCP (1200m):

At good value, consistent Victorian mare 6. Controversial Miss can build on an impressive record at the venue. Boxed on well in BM 86 grade here before claiming the weaker Hay Cup narrowly. Then led to the final strides back here on the Riverside circuit, and the regular jockey is back in the saddle. Boasts a one-in-five winning strike rate from 30 starts.

Dangers: Again no shortage of them starting with local mare 7. Patrika Gold who has won her last two up to BM 66 level. Smart five-year-old 5. Solvere has won all three starts this prep, admittedly in much thinner company, but drops a whopping 9kg from his last success. Watch for any market support aboard 2. Morgenstern who can peak fourth-up after running home hard in the Mudgee Sprint three weeks ago. Include 4. Tap 'N' Run second-up; and 9. Greek Tycoon fourth-up with significant weight relief; in all exotic plays.

How to play it: Controversial Miss each way

Race 7 SUPER MAIDEN HCP (1000m):

Promising Wodonga-based three-year-old 1. Baggage Handler can waste no time breaking through here. Has been given six weeks since missing by a whisker on debut at Benalla when grabbed in the final stride as a well backed favourite, and the drop back to this trip suits even better.

Dangers: Watch the betting on 3. My Turn Astern resuming for the new & strong Robb/Gallagher combination behind two open class trial wins. Gap to the rest headed by 9. Dolly who hit the line late on debut at the Riverside track; and Denman filly 13. Tropical Breeze who debuts for trainer/jockey Danny Beasley after cruising home to win a trial.

How to play it: Baggage Handler to win

Race 8 BENCHMARK 58 HCP (1400m):

Plenty of chances in a wide open closer, starting with 1. Gold Tracker who will relish this sharp drop in class deep into the prep. Charged home to score two dominant wins in and around this level before twice doing it tougher from tricky barriers in metro quality Highway company. Naturally has to cart a big weight; but drawn to get a soft run better than midfield.

Dangers: Keep safe at good odds 6. Hallowed Star who has made up late ground in two runs this prep, and even better suited getting onto a bigger track with a long stretch home. Watch the market aboard 3. Magmetric who has let punters down in two runs back from a spell, and steps up sharply in trip; while both 4. Intense Effort behind a last start win in similar company; and 8. Futuristic who draws inside; can both add value to exotic returns

How to play it: Gold Tracker to win

BEST BETS:
R2 11. SINGLE BEAT
R7 1. BAGGAGE HANDLER

BEST VALUE:
R8 1. GOLD TRACKER
