Neil Evans' Tips For Tamworth (Tuesday)

By Neil Evans

Track likely Soft 5 and rail True

Race 1 BENCHMARK 66 HCP (2100m):

We open up over the staying journey, and progressive provincial mare 3. Zippy Power can add another notch to an impressive strike rate belt. Won two of her last three this prep, generally sitting just off the speed, and had the most recent CL1 romp at Gunnedah won a long way from home. Bred to get even further being by 2014 Melbourne Cup winner Protectionist, and can seal a metropolitan berth by winning this.

Dangers: Tough five-year-old 2. Casirina is also building a handy record, winning two from three this prep up to this level, and gets a charmed run here with cover just off the speed. Gap to the rest headed by six-year old 5. Rockamo who draws well fourth-up, and will relish the longer trip.

How to play it: Zippy Power to win and quinella 2 and 3
Odds and Evens: Split

Race 2 MAIDEN HCP (1400m):

Thinner race which augurs well for improving four-year-old 1. Montari who can strike third-up getting out to this distance. Has disappointed in two runs back, but stable sent him back for a confidence-building trial win, and blinkers are back on.

Dangers: Honest mare 2. Sharkosphere needs to find a length, but has been in and around the money all prep, and won't get a better chance fifth-up first time over this trip. Included in exotics lightly raced four-year-old 3. Quatre Zip third-up with blinkers back on; 9. Early Hours who finds a race with less depth; and 13. Suva May who also comes back to a thinner race, and has hit the line hard from well back in her last two.

How to play it: Montari to win
Odds and Evens: Split

Race 3 MAIDEN PLATE (1200m):

Provincial four-year-old 2. Zenti was hard in the market on debut when tracking the speed but only battled through through the line after being bustled for a long way to keep in touch. This is a drop in quality, and the extra 300m gives him far more time to settle and an obvious boost, being by Group 1 winner Exosphere. Expect him to be ridden a little quieter here from the wide barrier and finish over the top.

Dangers: Big watch on the Kris Lees-trained pair, especially debutant mare 11. Regimental Music who looks well over the odds on debut from a soft gate behind two improving trials. Well bred stablemate filly 14. Keroessa also starts her career off two trials.

How to play it: Zenti to win
Odds and Evens: Split

Race 4 MAIDEN PLATE (1000m):

Back to the short course, and with the early fav running on Monday, this opens up nicely for emerging four-year-old 7. Tennagain who can break through at his fourth start. Hasn't been far away in two maidens at Scone, and the return to a firmer surface and regular stable rider back aboard are key factors.

Dangers: Watch the betting on Wanjina three-year-old 10. Lostma Cowboy who debuts for the leading home stable behind two progressive trials; while further out in the market, stablemate filly 14. Memoria has been impressive at the trials, and is bred for speed; while 4. Keep Me Loyal is over the odds from a better draw.

How to play it: Tennagain to win
Odds and Evens: Split

Race 5 CLASS 2 HCP (1000m):

Another competitive dash, but clear leaning to ex-Victorian four-year-old 4. Dimension first-up for 18 weeks for the new leading local stable. Has trialled okay in open class, and last prep was placed at metro BM 64 level third start after winning on debut. Draws to get a lovely spot behind the speed.

Dangers: Capable 3. Small Town will need to get across from an awkward gate, but has tactical speed and only been out of a place once in four runs this prep. Keep safe 7. Furphy who resumes off a long break and two trials, with gear changes from a low draw; while both 5. Tools Down improving second-up; and lightly raced 6. Zoffany's Gaze who resumes from the inside draw; can run into a place.

How to play it: Dimension to win
Odds and Evens: Split

Race 6 BENCHMARK 66 HCP (1600m):

Good quality and very open battle over the mile. Like the value of tough provincial six-year-old 10. The Chosen One who can snap a long run of outs fourth-up. Worked home nicely in two handy fields before being ridden too close at Scone 24 days ago, and his most consistent form is over this journey.

Dangers: Plenty of them headed by 1. Scorched Land who is ultra consistent in and around this grade, and finished too well under the same weight to win two starts back. Watch the betting on 4. Vanbari who resumes off two trials for the leading provincial yard; while 13. Flying Banjo steps up from a strong-finishing BM 58 win at this track only 11 days ago. Home track mare 9. Strelitzia off a nine week freshen-up; and last start BM 58 winner 14. The Towers if he gets a start; both go into trifectas and first fours.

How to play it: The Chosen One each way
Odds and Evens: Split

Race 7 BENCHMARK 58 HCP (1110m)

Home track six-year-old 7. Warrah Flash steps up in grade, but significantly gets back up to his best distance deep into the prep. Charged home to miss narrowly in consecutive BM 58 races carrying big weights. Draws to sit a bit closer here, and with the "Raging Bull" returning to the saddle for the first time since last spring, he's the one to beat.

Dangers: Keep safe tough five-year-old 8. Foreign Brother who has won two of his last three at BM 58 level, but from a soft draw is also primed for the rise in grade. Watch for a big first-up run from 2. Chestnut Scaffa behind a solid trial; while 9. Lady Mofeed is the clear best of the rest.

How to play it: Warrah Flash to win
Odds and Evens: Split

BEST BETS:
R1 3. ZIPPY POWER
R7 7. WARRAH FLASH

BEST VALUE:
R4 7. TENNAGAIN
