Neil Evans' Tips For Tamworth (Tuesday)

By Neil Evans

Track likely Soft 5 and rail out 3m.

Race 1 OPEN HCP (1600m):

We start over the mile, and can’t go past well-credentialled and still improving five-year-old 2. Indifference third-up. Did it tough from a wide gate two starts back before ripping home from the inside draw for a dominant open class win a fortnight ago. The extra furlong is a further plus, and he’s the one to beat.

Dangers: Expect sharp improvement from 5. Seahaven who comes out of that same race as the top selection; while 1. Hit The Target heads the rest.

How to play it: Indifference to win

Race 2 CLASS 1 PLATE (2100m):

Moderate staying battle now at set weights, and it sets up ideally for underrated five-year-old 2. Man Of Heart fifth-up from a low draw. Was disappointing when failing to hit the line in a stronger BM 58 last start, but he backs up in eight days in a thinner race, with the leading jockey taking over. Bolted in his only previous run in heavy ground.

Dangers: Honest 5. My Gem has a poor strike rate from 33 starts, but his latest fast-finishing effort at big odds in a deeper race was very encouraging, and he also draws to find a handy trail. Both 4. Tudor Cathedrals behind a last start maiden win; and 7. Regal Magnate with the blinkers on can run into the minor money.

How to play it: Man Of Heart to win

Race 3 BENCHMARK 74 HCP (1200m):

Home tracker 6. Exonumia is the clear one to beat fifth-up. Reliable on rain-affected ground, draws to do little work in the run, and has run home well in his last couple, finishing only a long neck behind the smart Point Basse in the most recent.

Dangers: Tough and fit 3. Amicus Curiae drops back in trip fifth-up, with a far stronger and senior jockey booked to ride. Gap to the rest.

How to play it: Exonumia to win

Race 4 MAIDEN HCP (1400m):

Testing maiden, but there’s plenty of value around improving 3. More For Us second-up. Stuck on strong when hard in the market and beaten narrowly first-up at Armidale., and fitter now he’s suited staying at the distance.

Dangers: Plenty of respect for locally trained 2. Wanda River who is banging on the door after being placed in all three runs this prep and draws to get nice cover just behind the speed. Expecting 1. Invincible Red to improve sharply at his second start over more ground; while 8. An Charraig second-up can both value into trifecta and first four plays.

How to play it: More For Us to win

Race 5 BENCHMARK 58 HCP (1400m):

Not much between a few of these, headed by 2. Aarkus who drops in grade and finds a very winnable race fourth-up. Has worked home late behind the placegetters against deeper opposition in his last couple, and is well treated after the jockey’s 3kg claim.

Dangers: Last start BM 66 winner 1. China Grove can go back-to-back, despite dropping down a furlong in trip, and receiving a sharp weight rise. Can position up midfield with plenty of cover and be saved for one run at them late. Another one coming off a win is 4. Heredero, although he steps up sharply in distance in a field with more depth. Include 5. Lord Of The Sun who is over the odds fourth-up from the fence draw; and 9. Distinctive Glory with a light weight; in all exotic bets.

How to play it: Arkus to win

Race 6 MAIDEN PLATE (1200m):

Lightly raced three-year-old 8. Zedari has been progressing well enough and draws to peak here on speed at his fourth start. Missed by a long head at Kempsey 18 days ago, and the little drop back in distance is a plus. Was scratched from Newcastle on Sunday to be saved for this.

Dangers: Good value is ex-Victorian 4. Stock The Rose resuming from the inside barrier in his first run for the new local stable. Watch the betting too on 2. Rembroy who draws wide fourth-up but gets a significant jockey change returning home. Gap to the rest headed by 3. Spiritual Architect fresh behind a forward trial.

How to play it: Zedari to win

Race 7 CLASS 2 HCP (1000m):

Back to the shorter trip in the closer and it shapes beautifully for tough and progressive four-year-old 1. Sightseer gunning for back-to-back wins. Wasn’t that far away in tough provincial company before dominant in a CL1 maiden at Muswellbrook. Draws to get the right run.

Dangers: Big watch on resuming 6. Sixfootone who comes to hand early in the prep, and has been afforded an easy provincial trial. Keep safe 4. She’s A Bad Girl fourth-up from a low gate.

How to play it: Sightseer to win

BEST BETS:
R2 2. MAN OF HEART
R7 1. SIGHTSEER

BEST VALUE:
R5 2. AARKUS
