Neil Evans' Tips For Tamworth (Tuesday)

By Neil Evans

Track Good 4 & Rail out 3m:

Race 1 MAIDEN PLATE (1600m):

A strong summer card opens up with the maidens over the mile. Above average and consistent provincial mare 8. Miss Shalaa is ready to win fourth-up in just her second prep. Chased home a smart winner in heavy ground two starts back before sticking on okay from the front in a much deeper provincial race over this trip. Better when she sits off the speed, and this is a clear drop in class.

Dangers: Lightly raced three-year-old 6. Hamoon Thunder can improve sharply here at his third start. Watch the betting on improving 7. Sukhbir who draws inside third-up; while stablemate German-bred provincial staying mare 9. Protectabella is bound to improve second-up over more ground.

How to play it: Miss Shalaa to win
Odds and Evens: Evens

Race 2 MAIDEN PLATE (1000m):

Back to the sprint trip, and it's a testing and open affair. Improving four-year-old 2. Pyramid Of Fire can pounce fourth-up from a softer gate, with key gear changes and back on firmer ground.

Dangers: Emerging filly 10. Island Tide is a big threat second-up behind a strong closing run at the provincials behind an impressive winner. Big market watch too on provincial four-year-old 3. Uncle Alf who has been given five weeks since dropping out on debut as an unwanted and easing favourite. Include 5. Injada resuming off a quiet trial, with winkers replacing blinkers; while local mare 8. Sookeysie returns off a soft trial, and goes in exotic bets.

How to play it: Pyramid Of Fire to win
Odds and Evens: Evens

Race 3 MAIDEN PLATE (1000m):

Play it again Sam, and back comes talented and wayward home track Capitalist four-year-old 3. Russian Standard for another crack at landing the maiden. Has been placed in four of his last five runs over 18 months, and ever since he debuted has found ways to go under, often as a short-priced or hot favourite. Hasn't publicly trialled this time, but reportedly working well, and first starter on a firmer track for a long time can prove the key.

Dangers: Keep safe improving 4. Threetimeslucky who held his ground okay first-up at the provincials. Big watch on 5. Devilicious who has been gelded since two easy trials in autumn; while 7. Chiky Chiky Mama is first-up and third start for a new stable since switching in autumn. Provincial-based fillies 12. Stiorra on debut behind a nice trial win; and 13. Viv second-up if she gains a start; both go in trifecta and first four plays.

How to play it: Russian Standard to win
Odds and Evens: Split

Race 4 MAIDEN HCP (1200m):

Another tough and open maiden, with local gallopers seemingly having a big hand. Expecting big improvement here from home track three-year-old 4. Outback Ringer over 200m further after doing it tough on debut when solid in the market.

Dangers: Keep safe 9. Fiery Panz who is hard fit and draws to find a handy trail. Included in exotic bets honest five-year-old 2. Bit Of A Step at his fourth start; and 5. Dubliner Boy drawn wide deep into his prep.

How to play it: Outback Ringer to win
Odds and Evens: Split

Race 5 BENCHMARK 58 HCP (1200m):

Not much between a few of these. Locally-trained mare 3. Leave Me Be can bounce back big time fourth-up after covering ground here last time and dropping out.

Dangers: Tough nine-year-old 1. Weather Channel rarely shirks the task first-up, but has to cart a big weight from a wider gate; while improving mare 9. Rainbow Rocket is capable of running into the minor money second-up.

How to play it: Leave Me Be to win
Odds and Evens: Odds

Race 6 CLASS 2 HCP (1400m):

Confident still improving four-year-old 2. Roussos can go back-to-back. Put the writing on the wall two starts ago finishing hard from midfield before sitting closer at Gunnedah 10 days ago and sweeping past for a dominant win. This is a bit tougher, but draws to find a similar run in transit, and carries 1kg less.

Dangers: Watch for improving 5. Kneze to be hitting the line second-up and down in weight after doing his best work late when fresh. Another one who loves to settle back and finish hard is 8. Stormy Pluck, and can park a bit closer here from a lower draw. Include 4. Majestic Wings third-up; and 6. Epica off a fast-finishing win in a weaker race; in wider exotics.

How to play it: Roussos to win
Odds and Evens: Split

Race 7 CLASS 1 HCP (1200m):

Yet another testing sprint, although it shapes nicely for progressive four-year-old 1. Lightfast who steps up in distance ideally third-up. Sat midfield before finishing well 10 days ago, and this is off-speed peaking time in his second career prep.

Dangers: Provincial four-year-old 2. Tennagain is a serious threat from the inside barrier. Swept home to easily win a weak maiden two starts back before again finishing hard in that same Gunnedah race as the top selection. Likewise is screaming for the extra furlong. Gap to the rest headed by 3. Island Lass who improves sharply second-up in a race of less depth; while 4. Apple Cubed with important gear changes; last start maiden winner at this track 5. Our Boy Ollie third-up; and 6. Distant Secret returning off a nine-week break and quiet trial; are all capable of filling the minor money.

How to play it: Lightfast to win
Odds and Evens: Split

Race 8 BENCHMARK 58 HCP (1000m):

We wrap up the card over the short course, and very much like lightly raced and progressive three-year-old 5. Brudenell who drops significantly in class second-up for the leading provincial yard. Showed speed resuming to lead for a long way in a much deeper metro race, and suitably stays at the distance.

Dangers: Keep safe local mare 10. Lavish Lady who bolted in her maiden here two starts back, and boasts tactical speed; while 9. He's Spoken first-up with winkers removed; and 12. Shooting Zaa who also resumes from the inside draw; head the rest.

How to play it: Brudenell to win
Odds and Evens: Split
