Neil Evans' Tips For Queanbeyan (Monday)

By Ray Hickson

Track likely Heavy 9 and rail true:

Race 1 MAIDEN PLATE (1450m):

We start with a very thin maiden on a rain-hit track with more falls on the day so the pattern and reading will be tested. Metropolitan three year-old 4. Mycah Leon rates a near good thing at his fourth start. Boxed on well two runs back on a Heavy 10 rating before strong late in a much better maiden at Muswellbrook.

Dangers: Canberra mare 8. Pandering has been working to the line okay, and looms as the quinella runner fifth-up in a weak race.

How to play it: Mycah Leon to win and quinella 4 and 8. Odds and Evens: Evens

Race 2 MAIDEN PLATE (1200m):

Very tricky. Provincial mare 8. Latin Affair can finally break through deep into this current prep. Hit the line in heavy ground at Taree behind promising one four weeks between runs, and draws to get a charmed run from the inside over more ground.

Dangers: All Too Hard four-year-old 3. Hardness only needs to get through the ground to be in the finish on debut after two progressive trials at his Randwick base. Watch the betting on provincial and ex-Victorian three-year-old 4. Demarcay first-up for nine weeks, and bred to handle the going; while keeping safe debutant three-year-old 5. O'Not A Doubt who has had two trials, and bred to handle the conditions.

How to play it: Latin Affair each way and box trifecta 3,4,5,8. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 3 MAIDEN HCP (900m):

This looks ideal for metro filly 2. I Love Lucy who resumes off a smart trial win. Showed more than enough in three winter runs in soft ground against much better opposition, and has tactical speed.

Dangers: Big watch on Not A Single Doubt filly 7. Sabiette who debuts off two trials for a leading metro stable. Gap to the rest.

How to play it: I Love Lucy to win. Odds and Evens: Split a special

Race 4 CLASS 1 HCP (1600m):

Home track three-year-old 1. Accrue capped some good improvement in four spaced runs this prep, bolting in his last start here after stalking the leader to the turn. Bred across good staying lines so the extra journey is no concern, and has handled heavy tracks in the past.

Dangers: Lightly raced and rival local filly 3. Mukowski is a threat off a dominant last start win here where she led from barrier to box. Also up in weight, but bred to relish these conditions. Liked the way underrated five-year-old 4. Face The Day hit the line late last start, and down 3kg for this tougher test. Improving five-year-old 2. Hot Bahama charged home to miss narrowly third-up, but rises in weight and unproven in this going; while 6. Final Showdown goes in wider exotics.

How to play it: Accrue to win and quinella 1 and 3. Odds and Evens: Odds

Race 5 BENCHMARK 50 HCP (1460m):

Capable four-year-old 2. Sir Finn has been mixing his form, but this is the weakest field he's tackled in a long while, and both career wins so far in 12 starts have come on heavy ground.

Dangers: Second-up from a long break with key gear changes, 7. Myboycolly can figure in the placings. Canberra nine-year-old 4. Keep Me Posted can also run into a place fifth-up; while five-year-old 3. Mr Cantankerous will find this easier than his last few.

How to play it: Sir Finn to win. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 6 BENCHMARK 58 HCP (2000m):

A modest edition of the Cup Prelude augurs well for home track nine-year-old 6. Hello China who can go back-to-back after ploughing home in similar conditions to beat a handy BM 58 field. The wetter the better, and by this stage we could be on a Heavy 10.

Dangers: Progressive six-year-old 1. Tudor Prince was terrific first-up off a long break here, closing from well back over this trip to beat all bar the winner. The handicapper hasn't missed him, though, and a query in this going. Provincial four-year-old 3. Dragon Dream drops back from a much deeper race at Hawkesbury where he battled on okay. Right at peak fitness now, and boasts sound heavy track credentials.

How to play it: Hello China to win and box exacta 1,3,6. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 7 BENCHMARK 50 HCP (1000m):

Keen on lightly raced six-year-old 4. Nostro Re off a five week freshen-up. Has been in and around the money in his last four against better opposition, and will be suited coming down the hill here in ground he likes.

Dangers: Local four-year-old 2. Joey Jaws is on the quick back-up from a Saturday failure. Keep safe 1. Stone Cold resuming; while included in exotics local 5. Shipway who drops in class second-up; and 8. Bonhomie who resumes from the inside draw.

How to play it: Nostre Re each way. Odds and Evens: Split

BEST BETS:
R4 1. ACCRUE
R5 2. SIR FINN

BEST VALUE:
R7 4. NOSTRO RE
