Neil Evans' Tips For Gundagai (Monday)

By Neil Evans

Track likely Heavy 9 and rail True

Race 1 MAIDEN HCP (1180m):

Lightly raced four-year-old mare 9. Jac Magic resumes without having publicly trialled, but is bred to big advantage in these conditions.

Dangers: Improving mare 7. Dreams Afar can improve significantly third-up.

How to play it: Jac Magic each way. Odds and Evens: Odds

Race 2 COLTS, GELDINGS & ENTIRES MAIDEN PLATE (1400m):

Pace should be okay in this, and that will suit progressive four-year-old 8. Trade Statement who can peak third-up. Two heavy track runs back in handy maidens have been good, and this is weak. Was scratched from Forbes on Sunday to run here

Dangers: Honest 1. Epizeel has more to offer in these conditions than his ordinary record suggests. Improved at the Sapphire Coast last start, and this is a drop in class.

How to play it: Trade Statement to win. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 3 FILLIES & MARES MAIDEN PLATE (1400m):

Now the girls' edition, and Kembla mare 7. Pilipinas is ready to win at her third start after doing her best work late at Nowra, with a far superior jockey taking over.

Dangers: Improving mare 1. Anazone is also on the cusp third-up after finishing close-up in heavy ground at Moruya; while 9. Sleigh's Belle is best of the rest third-up.

How to play it: Pilipinas to win. Odds and Evens: Odds a special

Race 4 CLASS 2 HCP (1400m):

Down to five runners here, and that paves the way for Canberra five-year-old 1. I'm The Business to make it two from his last four in conditions he relishes.

Dangers: Fourth-up also in preferred heavy going, four-year-old 10. Astrobleme has been working home okay in similar races, and can run the quinella.

How to play it: I'm The Business to win. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 5 BENCHMARK 58 HCP (1800m):

Open and even battle. Provincial four-year-old 9. Folk Hero has beaten all but the winner in his last two, and right at home on wet tracks.

Dangers: Don't under-sell lightly raced eight-year-old 2. Pontmain who was good late fourth-up, and drops in grade. Provincial six-year-old 6. Black Star Bowie hasn't been far away all prep; while 3. Sydney Blue was woeful third-up, and having trouble shaking his non-winner reputation.

How to play it: Folk Hero to win. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 6 CLASS 1 HCP (1000m):

This stacks up nicely for lightly raced four-year-old 1. Tap 'N' Run resuming for a second prep off two smart trial wins. Loves rain-affected ground, and is much better than this class.

Dangers: Capable four-year-old 4. Bleue's Choice will need to get over from the wide gate, but also loves this trip and thrives in heavy going. The rest should be making up the numbers, although keep safe 5. Little Hela who has been close-up in two runs back, and relishes wet tracks.

How to play it: Tap 'N' Run to win. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 7 COLTS, GELDINGS & ENTIRES BENCHMARK 58 HCP (1180m):

Don't be dismissive of seven-year-old 1. Mr Kylin because he hasn't fired a shot in his last couple. This is a much weaker race, and he can roll forward from the gate and give a huge sight. The 2kg claim is crucial and he does have a dominant heavy track win in this grade to his credit.

Dangers: A nine week freshen-up for five-year-old 7. Pushkar will have him competitive, dropping back in distance. Has been kept up to the mark with an easy trial; although debatable if the inside ground will be the place to be late in the day. Expecting 8. Zarsnip to improve after four runs back; while 6. My Solaki is best of the rest dropping back sharply in grade, with a 3kg claim.

How to play it: Mr Kylin each way. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 8 FILLIES & MARES BENCHMARK 58 HCP (1180m):

The girls' turn now wraps the meeting, and there are plenty of hopes. Like the value aboard five-year-old mare 6. Mouse Almighty who has good consistent form in and around this grade, and saves her best for rain-affected ground. Drawn to get to the outside.

Dangers: Canberra five-year-old 7. Red Kanzi is the most talented in the race, and ready to win after three runs back, but she's likely to settle well back from the inside draw which could prove a task. Tough seven-year-old 4. Sestina won a weaker race here three runs back, and the seven day back-up is a solid pointer. Has won three from seven in the heavy.

How to play it: Mouse Almighty each way and box exacta 4,6,7. Odds and Evens: Split

BEST BETS:
R3 7. PILIPINAS
R6 1. TAP 'N' RUN

BEST VALUE:
R8 6. MOUSE ALMIGHTY
