Neil Evans' Tips For Grafton (Tuesday)

By Neil Evans

Track downgraded to Soft 7 and rail out 3m

Race 1 MAIDEN HCP (1710m):

Keen on four-year-old 1. Gaslighter who can peak at his third start out to the right trip in a very thin race.

Dangers: Honest five-year-old 6. Kawuneeche is still searching for a breakthrough win ahead of his 19th start, but draws well and drops back from Class 1 grade.

How to play it: Gaslighter to win. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 2 MAIDEN HCP (1106m):

Like Coffs-based Divine Prophet filly 12. Miss Miraculous on debut off a smart trial win, and this is a weak race.

Dangers: Promising 1. Zoom Outcome only needs to get over from the wide draw on debut to be the clear threat. Looks ready to go off two progressive trials, winning the latest with ease. Keep safe improving 5. Kentucky Grey third-up from the inside gate; while 8. Buffet Buster can run on hard at his third start in NSW.

How to play it: Miss Miraculous to win and quinella 1 and 12. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 3 BENCHMARK 58 HCP (2220m):

Very moderate staying affair after plenty of scratchings. Honest mare 5. Yarrinup Flyer scored a long overdue and deserved win here three weeks back over the same journey, and hard fit can win again.

Dangers: Improving 2. Subrunner will need some luck from the tough draw, but is ready for this sharp step up in trip after rattling home to win a similar graded race 16 days back. Include 10. Waiheke Island in wider exotics.

How to play it: Yarrinup Flyer to win. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 4 MAIDEN PLATE (1410m):

Qld-based three-year-old 11. Puerto Rico has spent plenty of time at the trials in preparation for his debut wearing blinkers. Finished close-up in his last couple, and the three-year-old who finished behind him at the Sunshine Coast then bolted in on debut at the Gold Coast on Saturday.

Dangers: Local 4. Miles Ahead hit the line from well back when resuming, and drew to get a soft run on the inside; while watching the betting on ex-Randwick five-year-old 5. Our Castaway at his first run for more than two years off two quiet trials for a new Far North Coast stable. Include 12. Royal Archer in trifectas and first fours.

How to play it: Puerto Rico to win. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 5 CLASS 2 HCP (1410m):

Progressive Inverell five-year-old 1. Wine O'Clock should have won last start when losing his position at a vital stage before finishing strongly to miss by a long neck. Came from off the speed for a dominant CL1 win here prior, and unlike most of these he's still well on the rise.

Dangers: Consistent mare 2. Rose Bouquet has been attacking the line all prep, and draws to get plenty of cover. Pierro five-year-old 5. Managua is first-up for more than a year, but has been given two searching trials; while 6. Senshi Spirit is over the odds, drawing the inside and coming off a comfortable barrier-to-box Class 1 win. Was scratched from Lismore on Sunday to run here.

How to play it: Wine O'Clock to win and trifecta 1,2/1,2,5,6/1,2,5,6. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 6 JACARANDA PRELUDE (1106m):

Smart local mare 5. Tara Jasmine only needs clear air from the turn to win this on her ear. Two dominant wins here have only been split by a Highway failure where she got strung up in traffic back in the field, and she looks exceptionally weighted on 56.5kg

Dangers: Doubt there are any, but 2. Zac Attack can run the quinella resuming off a smart trial win and with a claim; while both 4. See It Thru also with a claim; and 7. Bel Academy coming off a dominant BM 66 win can run into the placings.

How to play it: Tara Jasmine to win and quinella 2 and 5. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 7 CLASS 1 HCP (1106m):

Hard to see emerging Qld filly 7. Prophetess getting rolled third-up from the inside draw. Swept home to easily win her maiden, and carries half kilo less.

Dangers: Improving 5. Hey Wayne also comes through a dominant maiden win; while 2. Endangered Species resumes without publicly trialling, but form early in the prep is generally strong.

How to play it: Prophetess to win. Odds and Evens: Split

BEST BETS:
R4 11. PUERTO RICO
R7 7. PROPHETESS

BEST VALUE:
R5 1. WINE O'CLOCK
