Neil Evans' Tips For Goulburn (Thursday)

By Neil Evans

Track Soft 5 and rail out 4m.

Race 1 CLASS 1 HCP (1200m):

Progressive filly 6. Sky Artist is ready for the extra furlong in trip third-up. Dominated from the front in heavy ground to claim her maiden two starts back before being ridden much quieter when hitting the line late here a fortnight ago. Looks versatile, and her chances are further improved with the track downgraded.

Dangers: Watch the market on resuming 1. Candlelit who won a recent trial and drew the fence; while 9. Off Da Hizzle can run into the money deep into her prep.

How to play it: Sky Artist to win

Race 2 MAIDEN HCP (1500m):

Plenty of chances in this, with some of the early fancies drawn out. Improving four-year-old 4. Kenseye Charmer strikes a fourth-up peak here over more ground for a very underrated country stable. Caught the eye late 12 days ago when finishing hard into a place despite not being suited settling back inside traffic, and getting to the bigger circuit here where he can work to the outside is a major plus.

Dangers: Consistent 12. Ten Feathers is hard fit deep into his prep, and bursting to break through, having been placed nine times from 21 starts. Gets significant weight relief, but still has to overcome a tough draw. Include home tracker 9. Jewel Approach fourth-up, with a key change of jockey; while at bigger odds and both third-up, 6. Can Perrio and 10. Jukebox Money can play a minor role in trifecta and first four plays.

How to play it: Kenseye Charmer to win

Race 3 CLASS 1 HCP (900m):

Back to the short course, and it shapes well for promising metro filly 2. Opal Fields shooting for back-to-back wins at only her third start. Was dominant when fresh at Newcastle, sweeping home from midfield to win with plenty in hand, and clocking a slick 32.47 secs for her final 600m. Stays at the trip on another spacious course where there's plenty of time to find her feet. Headed for much bigger targets.

Dangers: Keep safe lightly raced city mare 4. Bella Ace who resumes off two forward trials; so too locally-trained 6. Tickleberry who resumes in winkers without publicly trialing, but bolted in on debut last spring and sure to come to hand. Big gap to the rest headed by 1. Zequel second-up with blinkers going on.

How to play it: Opal Fields to win

Race 4 MAIDEN PLATE (1300m):

Well-bred filly 13. Private Legacy resumes as a hot fancy in what is a now weak race, with the main rival coming out. Given an easy time at the trials, but held her own in much tougher Group company right through her last campaign up the mile, and will be hitting the line.

Dangers: Respect for debutant 8. Audrey's Lane who starts her career in blinkers for the Brad Widdup yard behind two progressive trials and can run the quinella; while 14. Sinepia peaks fourth-up.

How to play it: Private Legacy to win

Race 5 MAIDEN HCP (1000m):

Another progressive filly by Hellbent, 11. Helldancer from the Bjorn Baker stable is well placed to strike first-up. Has looked very forward winning two lead-up trials, and draws to get a lovely run just off the speed.

Dangers: The market will be a solid indicator around Bull Point-sired 5. Point Out who debuts as a gelding sporting winkers behind two steady trials. Gap to the rest.

How to play it: Helldancer to win

Race 6 BENCHMARK 58 HCP (1600m):

A moderate and more open line-up for this level, but there's terrific value around tough home track mare 11. Chaotic Beauty deep into the current prep. Worked home nicely from a long way back in consecutive races up to BM 66 grade before settling closer here 17 days ago and again attacking the line late. Drawn to sit around midfield with cover, and again gets in well at the weights after the jockey's claim. Over the odds.

Dangers: Naturally plenty of them, starting with 7. Zabellsareringing who looked home for all money at Albury a fortnight ago before being edged by barely a nose. No real concern coming back from 2000m fourth-up having only missed a place once from six outings over the mile. Keep safe 2. Get Shafted who is suited getting to the mile fifth-up after closing off late over 1400m last time.

How to play it: Chaotic Beauty to win

Race 7 BENCHMARK 66 HCP (1300m):

Sticking strong with the local Danielle Seib stable here aboard smart four-year-old 2. Sir Ming who is hard fit, and can win again fifth-up. Came off an honest effort in BM 65 grade to easily put them to the sword in the CL4 Country C'ship Preview here when careering away from the front to win with plenty in hand. Big weight rise has been off-set with a 2kg claimer booked, and he's drawn to get the right sort of run in a moderate affair for this grade.

Dangers: Improving second-up off a long break, 5. Sizzler can run the quinella.

How to play it: Sir Ming to win

Race 8 BENCHMARK 58 HCP (1000m):

A competitive sprint for this grade to bring us home, and lightly raced local mare 6. Eight Of A Kind can cap a potentially big day for the Seib stable, resuming off a 25 week break. Despite doing a few things wrong in her first full prep last winter, showed plenty of ability, including a smart off-speed win when fresh, and she looked good closing off late in a recent open class trial.

Dangers: Exciting metro filly 10. Capabelle is naturally a threat following a dominant first-up win here where she careered away late from just off the speed after being well backed. Keep safe lightly raced mare 5. Princeston first-up with gear changes behind two progressive trials; while two others resuming, 2. Nonshalaant who drew the inside; and 3. Stormy Witness who is trained on the track; both go through the exotics.

How to play it: Eight Of A Kind to win

BEST BETS:
R5 11. HELLDANCER
R7 2. SIR MING

BEST VALUE:
R8 6. EIGHT OF A KIND
