Neil Evans' Tips For Goulburn (Monday)

By Neil Evans

Track Soft 7 and rail out 4m:

Race 1 MAIDEN HCP (1200m):

Honest filly 3. Slalmum is fit and ready to break through on an ideal speed map. Has been in around the money all prep, the latest beaten narrowly as an odds-on fancy, and suited coming back a furlong in trip here.

Dangers: Lightly raced and Wodonga-based 5. Tycoon Artie went under as an odds-on favourite first-up at Albury. Keep safe 4. Show Pony drawn inside, and dropping back from provincial company at her third start; while two-year-old Written By colt 7. The Bullet is on debut behind two easy trials.

How to play it: Shalmum to win

Race 2 BENCHMARK 66 HCP (1000m):

Not much between a few of these, but well placed 6. Picasso's Dream rates on top resuming behind two trials. Hasn't missed a place yet in five career runs, including consecutive wins earlier this year, comes to hand sharply in the campaign, and has a natural liking for rain-affected ground.

Dangers: Capable 2. Mon Pierre is also first-up and drawn to get plenty of cover back off the speed. Gap to the rest headed by 4. Field Of Myrtle coming off a fresh win in a weaker race; and 1. Septime resuming behind two trials.

How to play it: Picasso's Dream to win

Race 3 MAIDEN PLATE (900m):

Warwick Farm-based three-year-old 1. Don't Doubt Merlin has looked good at the trials, and starts his career over the short course in blinkers. Bred to handle the going being by Group 1 Caulfield Guineas winner and high class wet track sire Press Statement.

Dangers: Big watch on smart and resuming 8. Puzzler drawn to get good cover and a nice trail off the speed. Include 3. Sakimarjeul who hasn't done much in four runs this prep, but much better suited dropping back to the shorter trip; while 6. Felicitas at bigger odds is the best of the rest.

How to play it: Don't Doubt Merlin to win

Race 4 MAIDEN PLATE (1500m):

Ultra genuine mare 11. Tantalum can finally break through fourth-up at her 20th start. Has run into the finish in her last couple around the Riverina when hard in the market, and afforded a charmed run from this draw back off the speed with plenty of cover, and a more seasoned rider hopping aboard.

Dangers: Keep safe 2. Bounty By Knight who is tracking to peak third-up over more ground. Respect too for locally-trained 12. Sweet Treats rising in distance third-up. Gap to the rest.

How to play it: Tantalum to win

Race 5 BENCHMARK 58 HCP (1300m):

Liked the way progressive three-year-old 2. Vegas Dream found the line in heavy ground when resuming at Albury in his first run since late December. Only career win so far has come second-up, and on preferred soft going here, he is primed to not only win, but conquer better races deeper into the campaign.

Dangers: Over the odds is improving home tracker 9. Griffinstown Girl who can peak third-up from a soft trailing draw with a 2kg claim. Keep safe 7. Missile Maiden who draws inside, and comes through a tough and narrow CL1 win; while 3. Brohm Lake resumes in a thinner country lineup.

How to play it: Vegas Dream to win

Race 6 CLASS 2 HCP (1000m):

Talented home track mare 5. Miss Thatcher finds a very winnable race first-up with a 3kg claim in play. Has tactical and sectional speed, and her best form is clearly early in the prep.

Dangers: Speedy 2. Joey D'ior is well placed fourth-up coming back from a Saturday grade C1 over the Scone carnival in a race that had solid formlines and superior depth; while stablemate filly 7. Line Of Law improves sharply second-up. Gap to the rest headed by 10. Artiebett resuming.

How to play it: Miss Thatcher to win

Race 7 CLASS 1 HCP (1200m):

Light raced and promising local filly 2. Aunty Ginny can pay back punters here second-up and five weeks between runs. Looked home for all money when resuming as a heavily backed favourite here before rolling back to the fence late and was swamped in the final strides. Given time since, reportedly working well and is primed to return to winning ways in suitable soft going, especially with the main market rival coming out.

Dangers: Keep safe 5. White Tights deep into the prep; and last start heavy track maiden winner 10. Sydney Gal who adds value into trifectas and first fours; while 8. Ginjari fourth up is the best of the rest.

How to play it: Aunty Ginny to win

Race 8 BENCHMARK 58 HCP (1500m):

Ex-South Australian mare 1. Field The Moment has had one useful run for the new Goulburn stable since switching states, and will relish the extra trip here in what is now a very weakened race. Was competitive into a place in handy city races back in SA, and looks reasonably place at the weights after the jockey's claim in this company.

Dangers: The market will tell a big story with progressive three-year-old staying type 5. Majorian resuming for an in-form metro stable, and fitted with a pair of searching trials. Keep safe 6. Rush Attack who draws wide third-up, but only career win so far came at the same stage of his initial prep; while 8. Nats Enough goes in all exotic plays.

How to play it: Field The Moment to win

BEST BETS:
R5 2. VEGAS DREAM
R7 2. AUNTY GINNY

BEST VALUE:
R6 5. MISS THATCHER
