Neil Evans' Tips For Goulburn (Monday)

By Neil Evans

Track Good 4 and rail True:

Race 1 MAIDEN PLATE (1300m):

Trained on the track, improving three-year-old 4. Bledisloe is ready to break through third-up in his first full prep, reloading off a five week break. Was supported in betting when resuming before failing to run home, but then showed improvement next start. Both those races offered far more depth than this.

Dangers: Naturally early favourite 10. White Tights is a big threat fourth-up from a handy trailing draw; while 2. Beograd Boy who draws the fence deep into his prep; and local mare 9. Sydney Gal with a gear change; can fight for the minor placing.

How to play it: Bledisloe to win

Race 2 BENCHMARK 58 HCP (1500m):

Tactical battle for the restricted middle distance gallopers, and it shapes nicely for tough and honest home tracker 4. My Blue Jeans who can defy his ageing nine years, and finally crack it for another victory. Has run home well in his last two over the mile in better fields than this, and under the same weight from an ideal trailing draw, he can finish over the top on an eight day turnaround.

Dangers: Rival local 2. Chaotic Beauty is the immediate threat nine days after working home well in a deeper race at Wagga. Won two straight earlier in the year, and looks well treated at the weights after the jockey's 2kg claim. Over the odds is Canberra mare 3. Region Time who has been mixing his form in much better races, and is fairly treated back at this level. Must keep safe 6. Great Week down sharply in weight heads the rest.

How to play it: My Blue Jeans to win

Race 3 MAIDEN HCP (1500m):

Same distance now for the maidens, and lightly raced provincial three-year-old 3. Noir Vitesse has plenty in his favour second-up. Only beat a couple home at Wyong after settling near the tail, but that was his first outing since last October in a much stronger race. Gear changes have been made including the removal of blinkers, and over a suitably 150m further from a more economical barrier, he can park closer and produce a superior final 400m surge. Was scratched from Kembla on Saturday to be saved for this.

Dangers: Big watch on 1. Skit 'N' Skat who will likely jump favourite resuming off two solid trials. Keep safe too local 6. Bloomin' Ready who can also peak at the trip second-up on a significant weight drop. Include both metro mare 4. Warm Glow resuming for just her second start; and 8. Mosca Luna fourth-up and back from tougher provincial opposition; in trifecta and first four bets.

How to play it: Noir Vitesse to win

Race 4 BENCHMARK 66 HCP (2100m):

Small staying field at a competitive level, and very hard to see progressive four-year-old 1. Kingdom Of Logres being rolled from an ideal on-speed gate. Came off two very solid and closing BM 64 provincial runs to easily beat a similar field at Hawkesbury stepping up to 2000m despite being left without cover a long way from home. And the second-placed horse from that race then easily won the BM 83 Mornington at Tamworth last Friday. Has got better every time he's stepped up in distance, and being bred on high quality UK staying lines, he should go on to win far better races than this.

Dangers: All being equal, doubt there are any, although track any money for improving 2. Final Reset who finished in the second half of that field behind the top selection. Hits peak fitness fourth-up, and can run into the quinella. Drawn inside, 7. Heromania did his best work late over a mile at Canberra coming off a month-long break, and can improve further up to this trip.

How to play it: Kingdom Of Logres to win and quinella 1 and 2

Race 5 MAIDEN HCP (1000m):

Back to the sprint trip for the maidens, and lightly raced provincial filly 4. She's All It resuming for only her third start looms as the one to beat. Debuted with fair placing in a handy country field before being ridden much quieter at her Hawkesbury home in early December, flooding home late to beat all but the winner. Given more time, and signalled a big return with a rock solid trial 13 days ago. Bred to do good things, being by globe-trotting sprint star Starspangledbanner.

Dangers: Progressive 1. Zambezi River is a threat second-up. Led for a fair way when resuming at Wyong before being easily collared by a smart one, and staying at the trip is a positive sign. Gap to the rest headed by Matthew Smith-trained debutant 3. Ready To Shine by renowned sprint sire Better Than Ready who looks well fitted behind two progressive trials; while stablemate 6. De Luca can also figure in the money after a tidy closing debut run at Scone.

How to play it: She's All It to win

Race 6 BENCHMARK 58 HCP (1300m):

Much firmer ground and an extra 100m can pay dividends for lightly raced metro three-year-old 4. Showboat second-up. Was unwanted in betting when making up some late ground in a tougher race at Gosford never really handling the Soft 7. That was his first run since a flashing country debut win last August, and on the bigger track here in a weaker race, is much better served again settling well back off the speed. Another one preferred here to Kembla on Saturday.

Dangers: Track the betting on 3. Rush Attack who resumes for a second prep in the Annabel Neasham stable off a steady trial, and also bypassed Kembla for this. Watch the market too on home tracker 6. Oneofthetwelve who crucially gets blinkers added fifth-up, and draws to get a soft run. Included in all exotics progressive filly 8. Steely Girl who was backed from $2.70 into $2.35 before landing her maiden second-up; along with 7. Twelve Hours who is each-way value after holding her ground resuming a in handy CL2 at Canberra.

How to play it: Showboat to win

Race 7 CLASS 1 HCP (1000m):

We close the card over the five furlong dash, and nothing is better placed than promising and locally-trained filly 3. Aunty Ginny resuming for her second start. Made a big statement on debut late last year when sweeping home from just off the speed for an easy win in heavy going at Canberra, and reportedly has done well since. No official trials, but the stable loves to get them ready.

Dangers: Improving 2. Zipitalist was solid through the line resuming in similar company off a six month spell, and can run the quinella; while 7. Prophet Time fifth-up and drawn to get cover; completes the trifecta play. Gap to the rest headed by 9. Rosy Sue down in weight fourth-up.

How to play it: Aunty Ginny to win

BEST BETS:
R5 4. SHE'S ALL IT
R7 3. AUNTY GINNY

BEST VALUE:
R6 4. SHOWBOAT
