Neil Evans' Tips For Goulburn (Monday)

By Neil Evans

Track Good 4 and rail out 5.5m:

Race 1 CLASS 3 HCP (1000m):

Small but competitive field gets us rolling, with the more lightly raced runners likely to dominate betting. One of those is resuming metro filly 5. Clovelly who can pick up where she left off her first prep when sweeping home to win a maiden from midfield. Has been given two progressive trials, and this looks an ideal return assignment where she can park just off the speed with cover.

Dangers: Consistent 3. Dreaming Of Vegas shoots for a third win from four starts in his first prep, although tackling some better ones here; while 4. Nonshalaant is the best of the rest.

How to play it: Clovelly to win

Race 2 FILLIES & MARES MAIDEN HCP (1200m):

This looms as the breakthrough race for metro three-year-old 1. Champ de Mars at her third start. Progressed nicely hitting the line to miss by a long neck in provincial company 11 days ago, and from another handy trailing draw on a bigger track, can finish best in what is another small field and weak race.

Dangers: Honest 3. Ferrari Girl lacks a sports car finish, but has been in and around the money through a long prep, and gets a soft run inside. Gap to the rest.

How to play it: Champ De Mars to win

Race 3 CLASS 1 & MAIDEN PLATE (2140m):

The form of lightly raced Northern Hemisphere-bred 1. Aldeenaary reads very well ahead of just his fifth career outing. Was out of sorts in two runs through May against deeper opposition before switching on better and finishing okay in a provincial BM 64. Back to this company under what is a fair 59kg is the recipe for his first Australian win.

Dangers: No doubting 4. Naval Commission is a threat fourth-up after finishing close-up in two handy country BM 58s. Keep safe provincial mare 6. Special Day who did her best work late in a tougher grade at Kembla second-up.

How to pay it: Aldeenaary to win

Race 4 MAIDEN PLATE (1000m):

All the way back to the five furlong dash here augurs well at good odds for home track four-year-old 3. Oneofthetwelve resuming off a 19-week break. Ran home well on debut in a deeper race under the same weight in early March, and better educated now, he can find a nice trail just off the speed.

Dangers: Big watch on Exceed And Excel two-year-old 10. Speed Of Light on debut behind a controlled trial; while locally-trained 11. Griffinstown Girl with blinkers coming off; can run into the money.

How to play it: Oneofthetwelve to win

Race 5 FILLIES & MARES BENCHMARK 58 HCP (1200m):

In a race of poor depth, this looks like the domain of promising metro filly 8. Klum who can add a second victory to her impressive debut win at Scone where she charged down the middle late. The form from that maiden is solid enough, and she gets plenty of cover here before being saved up for a superior closing 400m. The one to beat.

Dangers: Watch the betting on 9. Power Puff at good odds. Has worked home well in his last two, and ready for the extra furlong. Provincial mare 1. Crossfire Road stuck on well for a long way in similar company second-up, although up 2.5kg in weight. Gap to the rest.

How to play it: Klum to win

Race 6 BENCHMARK 58 HCP (1600m):

Out to the mile now for a more deeper and open affair. Like South Coast mare 8. Spritely Emily at the value fifth-up. Finished best to claim a similar race two starts back before again hitting the line late from a similar position at Moruya 17 days ago. Gets in light after the jockey's 3kg claim, and she's better than her record suggests.

Dangers: Big watch on home track veteran 4. My Blue Jeans, who rarely runs a bad one, and stormed home to beat similar opposition here only 10 days ago when well fancied in the market. Draws to get good cover, but up 2kg in weight. Local mare 9. Chaotic Beauty is another one well treated at the weights after a 3kg allowance, and she can run home hard fourth-up. Include 5. Rent A Rock and 6. Heromania in trifecta and first four plays.

How to play it: Spritely Emily to win

Race 7 MAIDEN PLATE (1400m):

One of the tougher races to digest. Emerging three-year-old 2. Encroachment has been steadily working towards a win, and will find this easier than provincial level second-up where he held his ground.

Dangers: Progressive two-year-old 11. Denman Star is a threat fourth-up despite the wide barrier coming back from provincial company; while keeping safe too stablemate 8. Rise To It resuming from the inside draw behind two trials; and 9. Occhiata fifth-up can run into the minor money at big odds.

How to play it: Encroachment to win

Race 8 COLTS, GELDINGS & ENTIRE BENCHMARK 58 HCP (1200m):

Open contest to finish, but the value is there with four-year-old 7. Karaoke King second-up. Did his best work late resuming at a big price in a deeper race at Kembla, and his only previous win came at this stage of the prep. Up in weight naturally back at country level, but given he has solid enough form up to 2000m, nothing will be finishing stronger.

Dangers: A stack of them headed by 8. Bracewell who is hard fit and has plenty of tactical speed. Keep safe 5. The Chosen One resuming behind a solid 1000m provincial trial; while 1. Mentalism back from four straight runs in provincial class; and the very disappointing 4. Vaaroom second-up; both go into exotic plays.

How to play it: Karaoke King to win

BEST BETS:
R2 1. CHAMP DE MARS
R3 1. ALDEENAARY

BEST VALUE:
R8 7. KARAOKE KING
