Neil Evans' Tips For Goulburn (Friday)

By Neil Evans'

Track likely Soft 5 and rail out 6m from 900m to 400m and 3m the remainder:

Race 1 - 1:10PM GOULBURN SOLDIERS CLUB MAIDEN HANDICAP (900 METRES)

We start with a tricky maiden over the short course. Albury three-year-old 1. Lennox View has spent plenty of time at the trials, winning the latest at home in a modest time. Draws the outside barrier, but debuts in blinkers and is bred for speed.

Dangers: Another debutant, Headwater two-year-old 3. Oakeys Choice has trialled okay. Provincial mare 8. The Gift resumes off a steady trial carrying a lighter weight; while watching the betting on 5. Khumbu who returns off a 10-week break, and is the second most experienced runner in the race.

How to play it: Lennox View to win
Odds and Evens: Odds

Race 2 - 1:50PM MBA STHN HIGHLANDS BENCHMARK 66 HANDICAP (1300 METRES)

Very forgiving of metro filly 7. Zelady Luck who was hampered by the barrier at the start first-up, and then compounded it by not handling the heavy conditions. Comes back to country level now carrying 2kg less on suitably firmer ground.

Dangers: Progressive metro three-year-old 3. Son Of Sangio has won both starts coming off some smart work at the trials. Controlled a handy CL1 from the front last start, and looms as the clear threat, with a couple of gear changes. Capable 1. Byron has won three from seven, and draws inside. Reportedly didn't handle the deteriorating track and hung in badly at Newcastle five weeks ago, but given time and any rain is an advantage.

How to play it: Zelady Luck to win and box exacta 1,3,7
Odds and Evens: Odds a special

Race 3 - 2:30PM DARREN PRESSLEY BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP (1000 METRES)

Like the way provincial five-year-old 1. Young Heart consistently kept finding the line against better opposition late last year before taking a break. Hasn't publicly trialled, but will come to hand quickly in the thinnest field he's faced for some time. Winkers replace blinkers.

Dangers: Metro mare 3. Red Hot won at this track three starts back, and drops back significantly from Midway BM 72 grade where she was less than two lengths from the winner. Will likely jump a pronounced favourite, and drawn to get a lovely trail. Gap to the rest headed by Victorian country mare 6. Art Academy fourth-up.

How to play it: Young Heart to win and quinella 1 and 3
Odds and Evens: Odds

Race 4 - 3:10PM DIVALLS EARTHMOVING MAIDEN PLATE (1500 METRES)

Improving metro three-year-old 6. Unwritten finds a nice distance peak third-up, and there's only moderate depth here.

Dangers: Home track filly 8. Chance Reward backs up quickly after being outclassed on heavy ground here in a Group 3, and will find this much easier from a softer draw. Keep watch on 5. Senza Dubbio who resumes as a gelding with blinkers added behind two quiet trials, although was ridden out a long way from home in the latest. Was $14 into $7.50 on debut through deeper provincial company last spring. Local mare 7. Damood is the best of the rest with blinkers going on fourth-up.

How to play it: Unwritten to win
Odds and Evens: Split

Race 5 - 3:50PM PURPLE HEART DEFIBRILLATORS MAIDEN HANDICAP (1300 METRES)

Handy maiden here, with several chances, and the market will be a big indicator with two fancid Snowden-trained stablemates. Keen on Press Statement colt 1. California Press who resumes off a lengthy break behind two forward trials. Draws to get a good run on speed, and re-boots over the same trip he debuted over against stronger provincial company 13 months ago. Was scratched from Newcastle on Thursday to be saved for this.

Dangers: Stablemate filly 6. Dubai Showgirl disappointed fresh in tougher company, but less depth here, and draws to get a soft run off the speed. Watch the betting on well-bred Godolphin filly 7. Feuilla who debuts off two quiet trials. Include 9. Miss Adrenalin and 10. Avaricious, both third-up, if you're playing wider exotics.

How to play it: California Press to win
Odds and Evens: Split

Race 6 - 4:30PM JEWELL BUILDERS CLASS 1 & MAIDEN PLATE (2100 METRES)

Keen on improving and hard fit mare 7. Credit Crunch who finished best to claim his maiden at Newcastle, and also looking for this distance. Scratching of the well-fancied stablemate is a solid pointer.

Dangers: Keep safe three-year-old 10. Bastida who improved sharply second-up in a deeper race at huge odds; while 4. Circling who comes out of that Bastida race; and at bigger odds 13. Sonic The Hedgehog third-up; can both run into a place.

How to play it: Credit Crunch to win
Odds and Evens: Split

Race 7 - 5:10PM PHOENIX CONVEYANCING CLASS 1 HANDICAP (1300 METRES)

Tough race with little separating many of these. Emerging three-year-old 4. American President has done plenty wrong in his brief career, but has a stack of ability. Did it tough resuming before sweeping home late here 23 days between runs against tougher opposition, and the longer journey looks ideal.

Dangers: If progressive four-year-old 3. Spats Pav Bowie can tuck in from the wide barrier, he can strike second-up. Was even through the line resuming at Newcastle, but at only second start last spring at this track beat a handy maiden field. Provincial four-year-old 1. Calgary King has been right behind the winner in his last two, and draws to stalk the speed with cover.

How to play it: American President to win
Odds and Evens: Split

Race 8 - 5:50PM CAMPBELL PETROLEUM BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP (1600 METRES)

Progressive three-year-old 6. Sea Treasures is the clear benchmark dropping way back from the Group 1 Randwick Guineas where he finished well down the track. Had previously charged home into a place in a deeper provincial race, and can overcome the outside gate.

Dangers: Keep safe provincial mare 7. Travelling Kate fourth-up after hitting the line in her last two; while improving mare 9. Vanilla Sky is hard fit, and goes in all exotics.

How to play it: Sea Treasures to win
Odds and Evens: Split
