Neil Evans' Tips For Bathurst (Thursday)

By Neil Evans

Track Soft 7 & Rail out 2m from 1200m to 300m into a Cut/Away & True the remainder

Race 1 FILLIES & MARES MAIDEN HCP (1100m):

The girls start the rescheduled meeting on a surface that has thankfully pushed into soft range. Improving metro three-year-old 2. Why Doubt hit the line well third-up behind a smart one who was then placed at Randwick on Saturday in very heavy ground, and also finds a much weaker race.

Dangers: Watch the betting on provincial two-year-old 5. Chamal Power who closed off okay on debut in a tougher race; while the market will also be a big indicator with well bred metro filly 6. Inessa who debuts off a quiet trial on the synthetic.

How to play it: Why Doubt to win
Odds and Evens: Split

Race 2 COLTS, GELDINGS & ENTIRES MAIDEN HCP (1100m):

Now the boys turn, and metro-based Capitalist two-year-old 9. Change Is Coming rates a good thing at the weights at his third start in a very weakened race. Has been hard in the market in two runs against deeper opposition, and draws to get an economical run with cover tracking the speed.

Dangers: Watch the market on local four-year-old 3. Power Bank who resumes without publicly trialling, but shown to come to hand quickly, and better suited with an improving surface.

How to play it: Change Is Coming to win
Odds and Evens: Odds

Race 3 MAIDEN PLATE (1400m):

A thinner race now sets up even better for tough provincial three-year-old 6. Uno Artie who has been in the money across his last three, including a close-finishing 2nd at this track three starts back, and the form from that race is strong. On a 10 day back-up after hitting the line all too late as a hot favourite at Wellington, and carries 1.5kg less here with a stronger rider taking over.

Dangers: Improving 5. San Paulo rushed home late to miss by a long head, resuming in a weak maiden, and drew to get a nice trail around midfield. Included in exotics 3. Racatoon down in class third-up; and 4. Ready Enable who resumes behind two trials.

How to play it: Uno Artie to win
Odds and Evens: Split

Race 4 CLASS 1 HCP (1400m):

Hard fit provincial mare 3. Lady Superspy hasn't been far away all prep, and finds a significant drop in quality here, with a light weight after the rider's 3kg claim. Covered ground and forced a long way back from the wide barrier in a stronger race at Scone before hitting the line late, and only needs to reproduce something near that to claim a race that is very thin in depth. Another one advantaged with the track getting into soft territory.

Dangers: Provincial four-year-old 2. Bracewell has been disappointing in two runs since a dominant all-the-way maiden win in heavy ground, but draws to get a charmed run on speed. Watch the betting closely on 13. Final Statement third-up with winkers applied coming through deeper formlines, and was preferred in this to the following race; while improving mare 8. Smelisha is down in weight behind a last-start maiden win.

How to play it: Lady Superspy to win
Odds and Evens: Split

Race 5 BENCHMARK 58 HCP (1400m):

Lightly raced and progressive home track three-year-old 1. Astrolith can make it three wins from his last five. Put two wins together back in May before tackling tougher grades, not beaten far in a CL2 13 days ago, and big weight crucially off-set by junior rider's 3kg allowance.

Dangers: Stablemate mare to the top selection 5. Kimmylee can mix her form, but prefers a drier surface, and placed two from three here. Improving filly 9. Rupicasso has never raced better charging home to win her last two, although this is a bit tougher. Include in exotics honest filly 4. Eve 'N' Ruby down in grade second-up off a seven week break; local mare 2. Toostar second-up; and 8. Petain who is very honest and will relish the drier ground.

How to play it: Astrolith to win
Odds and Evens: Odds

Race 6 BENCHMARK 66 HCP (1800m):

Tactical battle over that tricky middle distance. Talented three-year-old 3. Island Press is well placed third-up over more ground, with gear changes, and can make it a big day for the local Dean Mirfin yard. Resumed in much tougher Highway company before hitting the line late in superior country grade, and gets right back in at the weights after the 3kg claim. The one to beat!

Dangers: Tough seven-year-old 1. Careering Away has dug in hard to win his last two up to this grade, but a query coming back 600m in distance only eight days between runs; while honest four-year-olds 4. Corvo and 5. Turnaround Time; are capable of running into a place.

How to play it: Island Press to win
Odds and Evens: Odds

Race 7 BENCHMARK 58 HCP (1100m):

From a leading metro stable, talented three-year-old 1. Cinque Torri is primed second-up, seven weeks between runs and blinkers coming off. Was a late scratching when well fancied in a better BM 58 at Goulburn eight days ago, and stable has a good strike rate when visiting this region.

Dangers: Local mare 6. Arimathea hasn't been far away in three runs since easily winning a weaker BM 58 in early May, and draws to get a nice trail. Big gap to the rest headed by provincial four-year old 2. Lady Shenanigans can hit back six weeks between runs after failing in a much tougher metro race; while including another Mirfin runner 9. Our Blue Moon second-up in all exotics.

How to play it: Cinque Torri to win and quinella 1 and 6
Odds and Evens: Split

BEST BETS:
R3 6. UNO ARTIE
R5 1. ASTROLITH

BEST VALUE:
R4 3. LADY SUPERSPY
