Goulburn avoided Saturday night’s big wet and despite cool conditions produced a Cup day on Sunday with a bit of everything.
It was the local product that got good purchase early as Goulburn-raised Shaun Guymer continued his strong form in the pigskin.
Guymer took luck out of the equation early in the day producing a positive ride to win the Graeme Spackman Country Magic for Emma Longmire on Outahand.
It was an emotional win all round with Longmire speaking last week about Spackman’s positive influence.
Tash Burleigh's bonnie mare Mosgold then stepped up to keep the local love flowing.
The consistent galloper taking a class rise in her stride to win the Newgate Farm The Guy Walter.
Apprentice Beany Panya supplying a loose rein and light touch in what proved a winning on-pace ride.
In the day's feature the Campbell Petroleum Distributors Goulburn Cup, Kerryn McEvoy’s hit and run mission proved crucial for the Ryan/Alexiou stable on Grebeni.
Despite an early scare courtesy of Grebeni’s slow start McEvoy didn’t panic. The classy hoop shrugged off the early pressure and applied some of his own reinstyle to get Grebeni close enough if good enough on straightening.
The race favourite ($2.15) did the rest getting clear air at the 200m mark as horse and rider became one melt sped. Plenty of connections were on hand to give horse and rider a rousing reception worthy of his Big Dance eligibility performance.
Phearson (trained by Brad Widdup, $7.50) was brave as runner-up (beaten a long neck) whilst Wagga-trained Another One (Gary Colvin, $7.50) boxed on well for third.
Two-time Goulburn Cup winner Al Mah Haha (Tash Burleigh, $26) proved fighting spirit can still coax old legs to outfox the form guide producing another brave title shot to hold down fourth place.
A member of the Goulburn office team summing the day up best after the last: “Good crowd, good racing, plenty of owners on track... good times!"
