There will be plenty of farmers flocking to Wagga races on Saturday seeking tips, but they may not be necessarily chasing the ‘equine’ kind.
Heading out to the track will be two couples from the Farmer Wants a Wife TV show and no doubt the local farmers will want to know their ‘dating secrets’.
“After appearing in this year’s Farmer Wants a Wife, there’ll be couples Daisy Lamb and Todd Melbourne, along with Sophie Trethowan and Dustin Waring attending our raceday,” said Murrumbidgee Turf Club’s Jemima Lyons.
“Singles Bert Harris, Tom Boyer and Jamira Kelly didn’t have any luck during the show but perhaps they’ll find it on Saturday!”
Saturday’s Aggies Raceday at Wagga is one of the largest agriculture social events in Australia.
The day was started by Ag students in 1989 who wanted to raise money for a mate and fellow student, Peter Worsley.
Peter sustained spinal injuries in a rugby accident which left him in a wheelchair and since then the Wagga Ag Club has raised numerous funds for Peter and the wider community.
Last year the Ag raceday committee raised over $30,000 from this event.
“There will be no shortage of entertainment with Aaron Oldaker in the WAC Marquee during the day and Paddy Wagon Band playing classics and getting the dance floor going after the last,” said Jemima.
“Complimentary buses will be available for the expected huge crowd at the Slocum Street exit at the end of the day, that will head back into Wagga for the many that are expected to party on.
“The Fashions on the Fields returns with the prize pool including vouchers from local boutiques Texas Jane and Ted & Olive, clothing store Blowes, Ruby Woodlock Art, Riverina Co-op and the William Farrer Hotel.”
Also on Saturday is Bowraville Cup Day themed as a Family Fun Day with entertainment a Fashions on the Field and free buses.
The Cup is again sponsored by Bowra Hotel in Bowraville, a long-standing landmark in the Nambucca Valley.
On Sunday, Shoalhaven City Turf Club will host its Bravehearts Charity Raceday, a seven-race TAB program at Archer Racecourse, Nowra.
Gates open at midday with a free jumping castle and free train rides along with bar and food options, and a TAB and bookmakers. All gate proceeds will be donated to Bravehearts Charity.
Meanwhile, tickets for The Kosciuszko sweepstakes were drawn during the week and already many of the winning ticket holders have snapped up horses to represent their slot.
To date, horses receiving a start in the $2 million race on October 19 at Royal Randwick are (TAB quote in brackets): Elson Boy ($15), Tribeca Star ($15), Gallant Star ($15), Cavalier Charles ($21), Boom Torque ($9), At Witz End ($11), Compelling Truth ($8), Tanglewood ($15), Far Too Easy ($6.50) and commanding favourite Front Page ($2.80).
