Defending champions Invincible Dash and Smuggler's Bay are within sight of achieving a rare feat at Queanbeyan on Sunday.
Invincible Dash ($3.10 equal favourite on TAB) won last year’s Queanbeyan Cup, while Smugglers Bay ($5.50) took out The Thunderbolt – the feature sprint race which is run over 900m.
Invincible Dash proved he is on target for a second title with a gallant second under 60.5kg in the Cootamundra Cup (1600m) on October 1.
The seven-year-old rises in the weights by 0.5kg and the step up to 2000m is just as suitable.
Invincible Dash proved he was at his best with an impressive trial win at Canberra last week and the seven times winner has been set for the race by trainer Nick Olive.
“He need the trial just to have him spot on and I was happy with how he went there,” Olive said.
“He is used to carrying big weights and I expect him to run well.”
Invincible Dash carried 55kg to victory last year and will have an additional 6kg on Sunday.
Upper House ($3.10 eq fav) ran fourth in the Cootamundra Cup and has since run in the same position behind Knights Armour at Wagga.
Departing Bullet ($4) has only raced twice at Queanbeyan for a win and a second and recorded a timely win at his latest start at Kembla Grange last week.
Meanwhile, Smuggler's Bay rises in the weights by 3kg on last year to 59kg for The Thunderbolt. Smugglers Bay will again contend with Major Time (second in 2022-$11) and Look Only (fourth-$9) on Sunday.
“I’m not sure where he will be from the draw on Sunday. Last year, he raced outside of the lead and won,” trainer John Nisbet said. “He has been working well so I expect him to be in the finish.”
The speedy Bold Offa ($7) from the inside draw and with a light weight may be able to lead and take plenty of catching. He was edged out by Master Joe ($2.15 fav) at his latest start and they again look two of the main contenders on Sunday.
Zelago ($5.50) was an impressive winner at Cootamundra four weeks ago under 60kg and drops 5kg. The two feature races are part of a strong eight-race program where record prizemoney is on offer.
The richest race of the day is the $50,000 Super Maiden over 1000m.
