John Schell's Tips For Wellington (Sunday)

By John Schell

Selections based on a good track

Race 1 - 1:55PM FEDERAL HOTEL BENCHMARK 66 HANDICAP (1000 METRES)

3. Dehero has struck winning form of late having won two of her latest four starts in good fashion. She scored at Port Macquarie before finishing fourth at Muswellbrook and second at Quirindi and then she bounced back to winning form with a Muswellbrook success last time out. She’s drawn well here and apprentice Ella Drew’s claim should help.

Dangers: 1. Gutsy is getting on but has a solid record and warrants respect on his recent form that includes a last start third at Dubbo when racing well. He is talented at best and warrants respect in this. 2. Bare To Witness is a three-time winner from 14 starts and resumes here on the back of a last start down the track Midway effort at Randwick. He’s had a trial leading into this. 6. Cumboogle was a winner at Narromine two starts ago and wasn’t beaten far at Scone last time out. This looks a nice race for him.

How to play it: Dehero WIN.

Race 2 - 2:30PM KFC WELLINGTON MAIDEN HANDICAP (900 METRES)

3. Bylong is a Press Statement first starter in the care of trainer Brett Robb and the three-year-old gelding has the advantage of barrier one on debut in this event. He’s had one trial at Scone and wasn’t beaten too far when fifth in that hitout. A forward showing is expected in this company.

Dangers: 1. Masque Listo is on debut here and has had two trials in preparation for this. Both trials have been solid and a bold showing is on the cards. 2. Press Gaze is also on debut and while he was down the track in his only trial he should show up here as he wasn’t beaten far in the trial. 4. Charlie Magic is drawn wide and comes into this on the back of a solid fourth at Dubbo. This looks well within his reach.

How to play it: Bylong WIN.

Race 3 - 3:05PM WELLINGTON SOLDIERS MEMORIAL CLUB MAIDEN (1400 METRES)

5. Kuroshinzo loomed up to win at Warren last weekend only to be edged out by Truth I Fear in a good battle to the line. He’s been placed in two of his three starts since joining the new stable and only needs to run up to those efforts in order to be considered the one to hold out in this.

Dangers: 7. Mosca Luna has only had two placings from 19 starts but has shown some talent in her career. She was down the track at Dubbo last time out but can improve here. 9. Rich Street ran second at Orange before a fourth placing at that track and has since ran second in a trial at Dubbo leading into this. This looks a good race for her. 10. Warm Glow is yet to figure in the placings from nine starts but has shown some ability and could sneak into the placings in this.

How to play it: Kuroshinzo WIN.

Race 4 - 3:40PM ELDERS INSURANCE CLASS 3 HANDICAP (1400 METRES)

7. Ms Reeves battled to the line well enough when finishing second at Warren last weekend. She had finished fourth at Bathurst and third at Dubbo in her two previous starts and while she doesn’t win too often she is racing well enough to figure prominently again.

Dangers: 3. Epic Poem was back to his best when scoring an easy win at Dubbo on Melbourne Cup day in easier grade. He is talented at best and should run well again here if anywhere near the top of his game. 8. Rewarding Belle finished second behind Epic Poem when last produced and was a winner at Forbes three starts ago. She’s racing well enough to be a factor here. 9. Sippity Sip has been racing well of late and looks well up to making an impact against these.

How to play it: Ms Reeves WIN.

Race 5 - 4:20PM GRAND HOTEL AND BOTTLE SHOP MAIDEN PLATE (1100 METRES)

2. Carbrook has been racing well this campaign with all four runs since resuming from a spell being satisfactory efforts without winning. He followed a first-up third at Muswellbrook with a second at Armidale and since then ran fourth at Dubbo before another Armidale placing when finishing third. He’s been placed in seven of 11 and gets another chance to break through here.

Dangers: 3. Hutt Street has been placed in two of four starts and comes into this on the back of a last start third at Coonabarabran. This race looks well within his reach. 5. Bonnie And Bruce was close-up when second in a Dubbo trial recently and looks set to run well on debut here. 1. Akinci is resuming from a spell on the back of a trial win. He can improve on what he’s shown in his race starts.

How to play it: Carbrook WIN.

Race 6 - 4:55PM J.R RICHARDS & SONS CLASS 1 HANDICAP (1100 METRES)

1. Wandering Jack was resuming from a spell when leading throughout at Moree to score in maiden grade. He should push forward from an awkward draw and take plenty of running down again over the shorter trip.

Dangers: 3. Grins has had two runs back from a spell and has finished second in each of them at Canberra. She won a maiden on the Acton track at Canberra earlier in the year and looks to have the talent to give this a shake. 6. The Mooch has finished second in each of her latest three starts. She has a poor winning record but there’s no reason she can’t be placed again. 7. Sorrento Palace was midfield at Dubbo on debut and followed that up with a second start win at Narromine last month. She shows ability and this is well within her reach.

How to play it: Wandering Jack WIN.

Race 7 - 5:35PM OTL - OVER THE LINE RACING BM58 HANDICAP (1600 METRES)

4. Avalicious was midfield in a couple of runs before breaking through again in easier company on Melbourne Cup day at Dubbo when justifying favouritism. She has a good overall record with five wins and 12 placings from 41 starts and she should show up again here from the good draw.

Dangers: 1. Interventionist hit the line well to score a dominant last start Wagga victory and only needs to run up to that effort in order to be hard to hold out again against these. 2. Star Intrigue had solid form including a Bathurst win two starts ago before running third at Dubbo last time out. He is worth plenty of thought. 5. Charlotting hasn’t been too far away in any of her recent runs and is far from the worst in this company.

How to play it: Avalicious WIN

Best Bets:
Race 3 (5) Kuroshinzo.
Race 5 (2) Carbrook.

Best Value:
Race 2 (3) Bylong.
