John Schell's Tips For Wellington (Sunday)

By John Schell

(Selections based on a soft track)

Race 1 - 12:40PM GRAND HOTEL COUNTRY BOOSTED 3YO & UP MAIDEN (1000 METRES):

9. Feimazuo is a filly which has only had the two starts and finished third in each of them at Orange and Bathurst, the latest behind Fletchlo. She looks to have more upside than her rivals.

Dangers: 1. Little Ditty has been placed in five of nine starts and ran third at Dubbo last time out. A repeat of that would have him hard to hold out here. 5. Powerstone is still a maiden after 26 starts but has nine placings to her name. She should figure in the minor money again here. 3. Taormina Sailor has been just behind the placings in each of his three starts and should show up here.

How to play it: Feimazuo WIN.

Race 2 - 1:15PM FEDERAL HOTEL BENCHMARK 58 SHOWCASE HANDICAP (1700 METRES):

4. Turnaway managed to score by a small margin at Tamworth two starts ago when double figure odds. He followed that up with a close-up fourth at Moree after racing on the speed. He’s drawn the inside gate here and gets his chance to figure prominently again.

Dangers: 7. Bandolero ran well at Tuncurry when finishing second two starts ago. He was since down the track at Taree but should find this race more to his liking. 2. Frosbie has failed to fire in his latest two starts at Hawkesbury but will also find this a better assignment and must be respected. 3. Threetimesalady has followed a Quirindi win with a fourth on the Beaumont track when finishing well and is worth including among the main chances again.

How to play it: Turnaway WIN.

Race 3 - 1:55PM LSS LOCKSMITH AND SECURITY SOLUTIONS MAIDEN (1400 METRES):

12. Jamacri looked good in her trials before debuting with a third at Nowra on debut behind Yendy. She was spelled after that effort and has since had another two trials leading into this return.

Dangers: 4. Oakfield Peewee is lightly raced with only two starts to his name. He ran third on debut at Wyong then ran fourth there last time out when not beaten far. He is primed to run well. 5. Territory Day was midfield on debut at Scone and can show up here with a repeat of that, while 9. Cranberries has shown some ability but would need to be at her best to be a winning chance here.

How to play it: Jamacri WIN.

Race 4 - 2:35PM WESTERN TRUCK GROUP COUNTRY MAGIC C1 HCP (1100 METRES):

2. Water Lad ran well when hitting the line well from well back to finish second on debut at Muswellbrook. He ran right up to that effort when justifying favouritism to score an easy Mudgee win at his only run since and is the one to beat again with Braith Nock taking the ride.

Dangers: 3. Peruno has some solid Moruya form. He won there four starts ago and was a last start third there last time out. The looks good form for this. 4. Ardonaugh broke her maiden at Grafton last tine out at her third start. 6. Serifice is a last start second placegetter at Mudgee and is worth thought again here if she can run up to that effort again.

How to play it: Water Lad WIN.

R5 - 3:15PM WELLINGTON SOLDIERS MEMORIAL TOWN PLATE HCP (1100 M):

8. Transplant contested the WRA Country Championships at Coonamble two starts ago and was safely held in the that, but since bounced back to form when finishing fourth beaten just over one length, behind Osman at Mudgee. He’s drawn to get the run of the race from the inside gate.

Dangers: 1. Major Time scored in a small field at Canberra three starts ago then was midfield on the Kensington track at Randwick before a last start second at Canberra after leading. He should prove hard to beat if he runs up to those efforts. 3. Casino Lord finished last at Scone when resuming but has the ability to give this a shake if he runs up to the third placing at Eagle Farm before the spekk. 9. Raging Rush won at Quirindi two starts ago then finished third at Dubbo last time out. That looks solid form for this.

How to play it: Transplant EACH WAY.

R6 - 3:59PM KEIRLE’S PHARMACY BIG DANCE ELIGIBILITY WELLINGTON CUP (1700 M):

3. Dasho Lennie is an import which has only had two starts since arriving in Australia for a first-up win at Sandown, before a last start third behind Wymark at Rosehill when running well. He’s a horse that looks to have plenty of talent and can maintain his good form here.

Dangers: 5. Sizzle Minizzle won the Country Championships Final last year and has been racing in good enough form of late to be rated a great chance of returning to his best in this. 2. Ita ran well when finishing third at Newcastle last weekend and had been tackling tougher grade before that. She has the talent to give this a shake. 13. Lockdown Gamble won the CDRA Country Championships at Mudgee only to be disqualified due to an irregularity. He ran well when third at Hawkesbury last time out and is worth plenty of thought here.

How to play it: Dasho Lennie WIN.

R7 - 4:35PM WELLINGTON SOLDIERS MEMORIAL CLUB WELLINGTON BOOT (1100 M):

10. Satin Stiletto finished second in the Calaway Gal at Eagle Farm in December then was spelled. She resumed for just her second start when winning in good style at Wagga, and she looks the one to beat here from the inside gate in a big field.

Dangers: 5. Canamble debuted at Coonamble and held on well to score a strong win on debut. She is having her second start here and warrants plenty of thought again. 6. Fingers Hunter finished third on debut at Scone at his only start and is not out of this. 11. Shoutaboutit is resuming on the back of a Gosford trial and has meet strong opposition when down the track at her only two starts.

How to play it: Satin Stiletto WIN.

Race 8 - 5:15PM K.F.C ZINGER STACKER BM66 HANDICAP (900 METRES):

7. Brief Statement was solid at Dubbo when finishing second two starts ago then wasn’t disgraced at Canberra last time. She is drawn ideally in this and should get the run of the race.

Dangers: 9. Star Of Kings failed to fire in two Randwick Highway events behind Derry Grove either side of a Mendooran win against much easier opposition. He can improve here. 12. Jet Empress is a start Muswellbrook winner with claims, while 11. Champers Girl has won two of five and is a chance.

How to play it: Brief Statement EACH WAY.

Best Bets:
Race 4 (2) Water Lad.
Race 6 (3) Dasho Lennie.

Best Value:
Race 5 (8) Transplant.
