John Schell's Tips For Wagga (Thursday)

By John Schell

Selections based on a soft track.

Race 1 - 1:10PM ANDERSENS FLOORING SHOWCASE 3YO MAIDEN PLATE (1200 METRES)

7. Villasaurus is on debut for the strong stable of Albury trainer Donna Scott, and the gelding has had two trials on soft surfaces at Corowa, winning each of them.

Dangers: 1. Dynamic One is coming off a last start fifth in city grade and this race looks with his reach. 5. Ruff and 3.He’s My Warrior have contested recent trials and performed we enough to be considered place chances here.

How to play it: Villasaurus WIN. Quinella 1,7.

Race 2 - 1:45PM D & S TABER ELECTRICAL SHOWCASE CLASS 1 HANDICAP (1000 METRES)

8. Impatient Miss had done all her racing in Victoria before crossing the border to win at this track last time out on a heavy track when racing in a prominent position. From a good barrier in this, Impatient Miss can again be on the speed and she should give plenty of cheek.

Dangers: 4. Miller Time can give Donna Scott the first two winners of the day. The mare was a winner at Albury on soft ground at her first start. She has had two runs since resuming and performed well enough in both, again on rain affected surfaces. She’s drawn well here and has the advantage of the apprentice claim. 7. Insane Volt is back here after being in TAB Highway grade in city company last time out. 1. Black Tahitian can figure in the placings again.

How to play it: Impatient Miss EACH WAY.

Race 3 - 2:20PM RUBY TUESDAY COUNTRY BOOSTED 4YO & UP MAIDEN PLATE (1200M)

1. Bulleyes is a lightly-raced gelding that is resuming from a spell here having been fitted with two barrier trials. He has been placed in one of his three starts and that was on a rain affected surface. Expect him to be primed to run well here with Nick Heywood in the saddle.

Dangers: 3. Inveterate wasn’t beaten far when leading at Forbes last time out and can figure prominently, while 5. Rainmaker is on the improve and shouldn’t be taken lightly. 8. Yet Tobe A Cod was close-up last time out and has claims again.

How to play it: Bulleyes WIN.

Race 4 - 2:55PM LAMBPRO COUNTRY BOOSTED BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP (1000 METRES)

2. Spinosaurus was disappointing at Forbes last time out in class 2 company, but should find this an easier assignment. His two runs before that were sound, and he has proven adept enough on wet ground.

Dangers: 6. Galbalan is resuming from a spell and is capable of racing well fresh, while 3. Backwater Trader has been around the mark since scoring at Albury five starts ago. 1. Platara has sound place claims.

How to play it: Spinosaurus WIN.

Race 5 - 3:35PM WDF ACCOUNTING + ADVISORY BM66 HANDICAP (1600 METRES)

2. Spitfire started his career in the Gary Portelli stable where he showed ability. Since moving to the Matthew Dale camp, Spitfire has recorded three wins and a further four minor placings. He hasn’t been disgraced in his latest two city starts, finishing seventh in TAB Highway grade in each of them. This race looks made to order.

Dangers: 1. Sky Diamonds was second-up from a spell when she finished fourth at Kemba Grange last time out. She’s handy on her day and the step up to 1600m should suit. 4. Blessed Award and 6. Nic’s Hero look to be the best of the rest.

How to play it: Spitfire WIN.

Race 6 - 4:10PM JJ’S WASTE & RECYCLING CLASS 1 & MAIDEN PLATE (1600 METRES)

12. Princess Nefertiti has recorded one win and five placings from just six starts. She has performed well on rain affected ground and only has to overcome a wide alley in this to be regarded as the one to beat.

Dangers: 2. Oneofthetwelve was just behind the placings at Nowra last Sunday and can get into the placings here with a repeat performance. 9. Twisted Quixote won narrowly here on debut at big odds but shouldn’t be taken lightly, while 6. Spiritly has place prospects.

How to play it: Princess Nefertiti WIN.

Race 7 - 4:45PM UNION CLUB HOTEL IAN REID SPRINT OPEN HCP (1200 METRES)

4. Ten Bells has been contesting city grade races in each of her three runs since resuming. This looks more to be liking and she can bounce back into form.

Dangers: 9. Brenlyn’s Trooper is a last start winner at this track and warrants respect, while 5. Neverstandingstill has been racing in city grade in Melbourne. 17. Mathrin is a last start winner and could get into the placings again.

How to play it: Ten Bells WIN.

Race 8 - 5:20PM WAGGA RSL CLUB SHOWCASE CLASS 3 HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

2. Bellman resumes from a spell here but is a first-up winner and is also a soft track winner.

Dangers: 1. Wild Irish Rover has solid Corowa form either side of a TAB Highway failure at Randwick. 9. I Am Mighty has won her past two starts at Nowra and the Sapphire Coast but place looks best for her in this. 4. Offspring is first-up from a spell and is capable of sprinting well while fresh.

How to play it: Bellman EACH WAY.

Best Bets:
Race 1 (7) Villasaurus.
Race 5 (2) Spitfire.

Best Value:
Race 2 (8) Impatient Miss.
