John Schell's Tips For Wagga (Friday)

By John Schell

Selections based on a good track

Race 1 - 2:25PM SMALLMON BROS WASTE & RECYCLING MAIDEN (1200 METRES)

8. Jato is a well-bred Starcraft filly that has had one trial leading into this and that resulted in a second at this track. She’s drawn well and looks set to run a bold race against these.

Dangers: 1. Hot Toddy has been placed in three of his seven starts and finished second in each of the latest of them at this track. He has the talent to run well here. 2. Savahay is also on debut here and wasn’t beaten far in his only trial at this track. 7. Divron has finished third in three of five starts and she could be placed again if she can run up to her best.

How to play it: Jato WIN.

Race 2 - 3:05PM JJ’S WASTE & RECYCLING MAIDEN PLATE (1400 METRES)

12. Christmas Star comes into this on the back of a third at this track and that made it three thirds from six starts. She’s been hitting the line well and should be in the thick of things again.

Dangers: 10. Roullottie was placed at this track two starts ago when performing well then was midfield at Queanbeyan when last produced. She’s drawn the rails here and should run well. 9. Kosciuszko Bound ran her best race yet when second at Orange at her latest start when leading and can give cheek again with a repeat of that. 8. Chanceux Dernier hasn’t been disgraced in each of two starts and bears close watching in the company.

How to play it: Christmas Star WIN.

Race 3 - 3:40PM QUICK FIX APPLIANCES ‘THE ROAD TO THE JERICHO’ MOUNTAINEER CUP - HEAT OF THE WAGGA STAYERS SERIES (3200 METRES)

3. Whisker To Whisker scored narrowly at Newcastle three starts ago and then was a close second at Rosehill before a last start seventh at Warwick Farm when not beaten far. She has the talent to give this a shake.

Dangers: 4. Roman Hands won over 2500m at this track when last produced and has claims on the strength of that. 2. McGeehan hasn’t been disgraced in city grade races of late and is well worth including among the main chances. 5. The Big Biig has had two runs back from a spell and looks to be suited by this distance.

How to play it: Whisker To Whisker WIN.

Race 4 - 4:20PM GALLAGHER INSURANCE BROKERS CLASS 1 - HEAT OF THE RISING STAR (1200 METRES)

9. Oimbari was a Corowa winner three starts ago and ran well again when not beaten far despite being unplaced at Wodonga last time out. She’s going well enough to be rated a winning chance here.

Dangers: 1. Galston Gorge was lining up for his third start in a race when winning at Queanbeyan last time out. He’s drawn wide here but can make an impact with a repeat of the latest effort. 8. Jazz All Knight won a maiden at Canberra three starts ago and has been placed in both runs since then. 4. Kaida Blaze has a consistent record and should be given plenty of thought against this opposition.

How to play it: Oimbari EACH WAY.

Race 5 - 4:55PM ICG WAGGA PTY LTD CLASS 1 & MAIDEN PLATE (1600 METRES)

6. Point Out was third-up from a spell when hitting the line well to finish a last start second at Nowra. The step up in distance here looks like it will suit and he looms as one of the hardest to beat.

Dangers: 11. Scarli Japali resumed from a spell with a fourth at Canberra and she has a solid record from a lightly raced career. 1. Check Side has been placed in each of his latest two starts and can be in the finish again with a repeat of those efforts. 2. Drunken Sailor hasn’t been too far away in his two most recent runs and could be placed here without surprising.

How to play it: Point Out WIN.

Race 6 - 5:35PM GOOD TALK BRAGGER CUP BENCHMARK 50 HANDICAP (1600 METRES)

5. Notleanormean raced on the speed and battled on well enough to finish third at Albury at her latest start. She has shown enough talent in her career to be rated the one to beat here.

Dangers: 1. Bonvalante was close-up when fourth on the Riverside here before a last start second at this track albeit a fair way from the winner. 4. Space Academy was a maiden winner at Corowa three starts ago and wasn’t too far away when fourth at Albury at his latest outing. 9. Mayfair Hotel won at Gundagai before being spelled and resumed with a fourth at this track when running home well.

How to play it: Notleanormean WIN.

Race 7 - 6:10PM COORPAROO PARK STAN SADLEIR STAKES (1400 METRES)

8. County Kilkenny had some solid city Highway form before winning on the Kensington track in August when arriving in the nick of time. He since ran sixth at Canterbury before a second in the Cootamundra Cup. He’s got his share of ability and looks hard to beat here.

Dangers: 1. Body Bob is classy at best and has been just behind the placings in each of two runs back from a spell. He was close-up in a recent trial and can bounce back to form here. 11. Ruperts Red Rocket was a winner at this track two starts ago and wasn’t disgraced at Caulfield when last produced. This looks well within his reach. 2. Manderboss ran well when second at Canberra at his latest outing and should show up again with a repeat of that.

How to play it: County Kilkenny EACH WAY.

Race 8 - 6:40PM ELDERS INSURANCE BENCHMARK 82 HANDICAP (1000 METRES)

1. Iron Will has a great winning record and has taken on a number of city races and performed well with a Highway victory included. He won at Canberra in December last year before being spelled and resumed with another win at the same track when doing the job well as favourite.

Dangers: 8. Supido Beauty has won four of her eight starts and is unbeaten from three starts at this track. She resumes here after two trials and should be hard to hold out. 9. Projeto resumed with a 10th at Bendigo but has a good overall record. 2. Prophet’s Pride is handy at best and has solid claims.

How to play it: Iron Will WIN.

Best Bets:
Race 1 (8) Jato.
Race 5 (6) Point Out.

Best Value:
Race 4 (9) Oimbari.
