John Schell's Tips For Tamworth (Tuesday)

By John Schell

Selections based on a soft track

Race 1 - 12:55PM PAT & TERRY BURKE BENCHMARK 66 HANDICAP (2100 METRES)

1. Cenotes contested a race over the same distance at this track last time out and after enjoying a good run in transit he hit the line well to score a dominant victory. He’s in a good stable and has Ben Looker sticking with him. He can win again.

Dangers: 2. Grenoble hit the line well when finishing second at his latest start at Bathurst. He’s shown enough talent on his day to be able to give this a big shake. 3. Nature Boy was placed here behind Cenotes two starts ago, and since then won at Grafton after racing on the speed. He can give cheek here. 6. Merapi hit the line well to score at Taree at her last start and that was an effort that made a lie of her previous wet track form.

How to play it: Cenotes WIN.

Race 2 - 1:35PM JOHN CLIFT MAIDEN PLATE (1000 METRES)

8. Saraya is a Headwater filly on debut here and she has had two trials leading into this. She ran fourth in the initial trial at Newcastle, then wasn’t beaten far at Wyong in the second hitout. She is drawn well here.

Dangers: 4. Isadami failed to beat a runner home at this track last time out, but she did finish second at the start prior at this track. She has the ability to figure prominently here. 2. High And Marty resumed from a spell with a midfield effort after leading and can improve into this. 1. El Beatle is debuting here for a new stable and has solid form to suggest he’ll run well.

How to play it: Saraya WIN.

Race 3 - 2:10PM TIM BELL COUNTRY BOOSTED MAIDEN PLATE (1400 METRES)

11. Withstand has only had three starts but he has shown ability in each of them. He ran third on debut at Muswellbrook before finishing fourth at the same track when not beaten too far. He went back to last and ran home well for a last start third at Scone.

Dangers: 3. It’s Showtime has been placed in each of his latest two starts, and only needs to run up to those efforts to be a contender against these. 1. Blazed Prince kept hitting the line at this track when a last start second and can figure again with a repeat of that. 4. Mighty Zou debuted with a fourth at Scone last week and should have derived benefit from that hitout. With the benefit of improvement, he looms as a place chance here.

How to play it: Withstand WIN.

Race 4 - 2:45PM DARREN JONES SUPER MAIDEN HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

1. Rembroy has been placed in five of his 10 starts. He’s had three starts since resuming from a spell and ran second at this track two starts back. He was just behind the placegetters in both runs either side of that. He’s drawn well here and has the benefit of the allowance.

Dangers: 7. Let’s Go Leo has been racing well with a string of recent placings. He should be in the thick of things again here. 8. Finest Art hasn’t been too far away of late and could show up in the placings here without surprising. 4. London Star hasn’t been beaten far in two runs at Wagga and Moruya either side of a spell, and can be placed here without surprising.

How to play it: Rembroy WIN.

Race 5 - 3:20PM BOB SCHERF CLASS 1 HANDICAP (1400 METRES)

4. Turbo Charged was a strong winner at Gilgandra before being spelled. She performed well at this track before that and has had two solid trials in preparation for this return to racing. She’s drawn the rails alley here and is set to sprint well fresh.

Dangers: 2. Divine Note was a maiden winner at Kempsey on a heavy track before being spelled. He’s had two trials leading into this and should be ready to sprint well fresh. 3. Hulu has a win and a second to his name from four starts and looks well up to making in impact here. 8. Full Commitment won at Quirindi two starts ago and ran well again when a last start third at this track.

How to play it: Turbo Charged EACH WAY.

Race 6 - 3:55PM MERV CORLISS TAMWORTH RUSH BM82 HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

6. Toulon Factor has been racing in fine form of late. He won at Narromine at the end of June and since then has been placed a couple of times in addition to winning at Gilgandra two starts ago. He can give plenty of cheek from the good barrier in this.

Dangers: 5. Life’s A Party ran home well for a last start second behind Custo at Dubbo. She is lightly raced but has a good record, and can go in with the job here. 4. Iron Hat was midfield here before a fourth on the Kensington track. He since ran third to Custo at Dubbo. 3. Deep Rouge was midfield in good grade behind Cavalier Charles at her latest start and warrants respect here.

How to play it: Toulon Factor WIN.

Race 7 - 4:35PM SKEETER & DAWN KELLY CLASS 2 HANDICAP (1600 METRES)

1. Tapa Kick is yet to miss a place from eight starts. He’s had two wins and six placings, and hit the line well enough when third at Dubbo when resuming. He can improve into this.

Dangers: 4. Invincible Red won at Moree when last produced and he is building a solid record. 3. Sebilla has won her last two starts at Scone and should push forward from a wide alley and take beating again. 7. Always Split Tens won in maiden grade here three starts ago, and has run well in both runs since.

How to play it: Tapa Kick WIN.

Race 8 - 5:10PM NOELENE MARTIN CLASS 3 HANDICAP (1000 METRES)

1. Last Frontier has won three of his four starts. He ran third at this track at his only defeat and he has had two trials to prepare himself for this return to racing.

Dangers: 8. Soaring Phoenix has a string of placings before breaking through with a win at Muswellbrook in July. She wasn’t beaten far in a Randwick Highway event last time out and is worth plenty of thought here. 12. Crimson Bonnet has two wins and two placings from seven starts and was beaten less than a length when third at Scone last time out. 4. Vis I Do won at Armidale before a last start 10th in Highway grade at Randwick. He can improve here after a solid trial.

How to play it: Last Frontier WIN.

Best Bets:
Race 3 (11) Withstand.
Race 4 (1) Rembroy.

Best Value:
Race 5 (4) Turbo Charged.
