John Schell's Tips For Tamworth (Tuesday)

By John Schell

(Selections based on a soft track)

Race 1 - 12:55PM BRYCON CIVIL COUNTRY BOOSTED MAIDEN PLATE (1000 METRES):

1. Helluva Cowboy is on debut and he has had a number of trials leading into this event, including a couple of recent efforts at Scone and this track in which he finished second. He’s drawn wide here but has Aaron Bullock in the saddle.

Dangers: 2. It’s Showtime is resuming from a year away from racing. He ran fifth on debut at Dubbo and was 11th in the Inglis Challenge this time last year. He ran in a trial behind Dollar Magic leading into this return to racing. 4. Manik debuted with a fourth at Muswellbrook and only needs to run up to that in order to be a contender again in this. 5. All Too Vegas raced on the speed and finished second on debut at Gunnedah. She should run well again here from the inside barrier..

How to play it: Helluva Cowboy WIN.

Race 2 - 1:35PM OATLEY WINES F&M BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP (1200 METRES):

3. Great Point has only had two starts but showed enough talent om debut when finishing fourth at Dubbo. She followed that up with a strong win at Scone at her second run in a race, and has had a freshen-up leading into this. She’s drawn the inside gate here and should give plenty of cheek.

Dangers: 1. Scholl Deep has only missed a place in three of her eight starts and she’s finished fourth in those three starts. She’s never far from the action and should take plenty of beating here. 10. Bijara led and fought on well when placed at Warren last month. She’s had a trial leading into this and is primed to run well. 12. Mrs Bigglesworth has performed well in two runs back from a long spell and from a good gate here should be in the thick of things

How to play it: Great Point WIN.

Race 3 - 2:10PM PEEL VALLEY TYRES MAIDEN HANDICAP (1200 METRES):

1. Gigaton had his first start for a new stable when starting favourite and finishing fifth at Wellington. He is bound to be improved by that effort and is worth including among the main chances.

Dangers: 2. Alertado ran second at this track two starts ago, then finished a close-up fourth here last time out. That form looks solid for this race. 4. No More Romance ran well on debut at Quirindi and should run well here with a repeat of that effort. 5. Lockdown Lad has been racing well since resuming from a spell and warrants serious thought here.

How to play it: Gigaton WIN.

Race 4 - 2:50PM BURKE & DOUGLAS FUNERALS MAIDEN PLATE (1600 METRES):

11. San Gavino ran well in a trial at Scone before making her race debut and running well when finishing fifth at Muswellbrook when beaten just over two and a half lengths. She’s drawn wide in this but has talented apprentice Braith Nock taking the ride.

Dangers: 5. Rockbarton Icon was placed at Scone two starts ago when running well, and followed that up with a sixth at Newcastle. He has the talent to give this a shake. 13. Tigon Princess ran her best race yet when a last start second at this track. She should figure prominently again here from the good gate. 12. So Newchee Thinks has only had two starts either side of a spell and she should be improved by a first-up sixth at Gunnedah.

How to play it: San Gavino WIN.

Race 5 - 3:25PM CANNON COHEN & ASSOCIATES CG&E BM 58 HCP (1200 METRES):

3. Giving Delight ran well when second-up from a spell and hitting the line well to finish fourth at Scone. He followed that up with a run at Narromine where he got well back as favourite and was doing his best work late to again run fourth. Giving Delight is a winner of two from seven and gets his chance to break back into the winners circle in this.

Dangers: 4. Island Legend was a winner at Gosford late last year. He resumed from a spell with a fifth at Arnidale, and then finished third at Quirindi at his latest start. He should be ready to peak now. 1. Stenson Wallman was first-up from a spell when last produced at Muswellbrook. He’s a winner of two from seven and is worth including among the main chances. 11. Nicator is resuming from a spell and has shown enough talent in his career to be rated a good chance in this line-up.

How to play it: Giving Delight WIN.

Race 6 - 4:05PM AGRI OFFICE SOLUTIONS BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP (1600 METRES):

11. The Great Armada raced on the speed and fought on strongly to finish second at Scone two starts ago. He backed that up with another good effort at Narromine last time out when he settled back in the field and hit the line well to score a narrow victory. He looks to be versatile and can make a major impact in this again.

Dangers: 2. Are You Joking was a winner at Muswellbrook last November, and then finished second at this track before being spelled. He resumed with a second at Muswellbrook, before running well enough when sixth at Newcastle last time out. He should run well here. 8. Invader’s Girl looked good when scoring at Wellington before hitting the line well when finishing second at Mudgee at her latest hitout. She should figure again with a repeat of those efforts. 4. Bill Peyto won at Inverell two starts go and is a chance again with a repeat of that.

How to play it: The Great Armada EACH WAY.

Race 7 - 4:40PM MCDONALDS TAMWORTH CLASS 2 HANDICAP (1000 METRES):

3. King Rupert was racing in great form last campaign. He won a race at Scone and finished second at the same track, in between a couple of Highway efforts in which he ran third and fourth at Rosehill and Randwick respectively. He should be primed to run well fresh.

Dangers: 7. Somerton Sniper did the job well at his second start when scoring a strong win at Armidale. He’s had two trials leading into this return to racing. 4. Pliskova is resuming from a spell and was a close-up third at Dubbo before the break. She should be ready to sprint well fresh here. 8. Schwoon is a last start Muswelbrook winner that warrants thought again in this.

How to play it: King Rupert WIN.

Best Bets:
Race 3 (1) Gigaton.
Race 5 (3) Giving Delight.

Best Value:
Race 6 (11) The Great Armada.
