John Schell's Tips For Scone (Sunday)

By John Schell

Selections based on a soft track

Race 1 - 12:50PM SHINZO AT COOLMORE COUNTRY BOOSTED MAIDEN (1300 METRES)

3. Homeland has only had two starts and he has performed very well in each of them. He was midfield at this track on debut, and then hit the line well to finish fourth at his only other start. He is primed for this and should take plenty of beating.

Dangers: 8. Naftali won a trial before debuting with a fourth at Dubbo when not beaten far. He has ability and should run well in this if he can repeat his latest effort. 4. Tarrant County is having his first start and was placed in a trial leading into this. He’s drawn well and a forward showing would not surprise. 6. Red Rags To Bulls has had two trials in preparation for this debut and could be placed.

How to play it: Homeland WIN.

Race 2 - 1:30PM EMIRATES PARK MAIDEN HANDICAP (900 METRES)

10. Upwardly Mobile had a trial at the end of last year and finished third in that hitout at Tamworth. She has since had another trial at this track earlier this month in preparation for this debut, and she again ran well. She’s drawn well and should perform well.

Dangers: 8. Pride To Follow is having her first start and has won a trial leading into this. She looks talented and only needs to overcome a wide alley here in order to be competitive. 1. Here Comes Hogan has been placed in one of his three starts and resumes here. He’s a recent trial winner at Kembla Grange and should take plenty of beating. 3. Missy Moss is on debut and won a trial in easy fashion here last November. She should be ready to run well in this.

How to play it: Upwardly Mobile EACH WAY.

Race 3 - 2:06PM INGLIS DIGITAL JUNE LATE SALE CLASS 1 (1200 METRES)

2. Clear Thinking is a well-bred mare that looks to have untapped potential. She impressed in trials before being scratched behind the barriers when unable to load at Newcastle when supposed to be at her debut. She subsequently ran second in a Tamworth trial before finally debuting and scoring a dominant victory at this track as a $1.50 favourite. She’s drawn wide here but looks to have the ability to go on with the job and score again.

Dangers: 7. Antisocial ran well when finishing second at Quirindi two starts ago, then hit the line well and wasn’t beaten far when fourth at this track on cup day. She has the ability to give this a shake. 8. You Have To Go broke his maiden when winning at Dubbo last time out, and he could be placed if he can run up to that effort. 10. Speck was a winner on debut at Dubbo, and she followed that up with a fourth at that track at her only other start. She can make an impact here with a repeat of those runs.

How to play it: Clear Thinking WIN.

Race 4 - 2:40PM ADMIRE MARS AT ARROWFIELD MAIDEN PLATE (1100 METRES)

2. Éclair Vitality is on debut and has looked good in his trials. This looks to be well within his capabilities.

Dangers: 4. Taipan Legend has been placed in two of eight starts and can show up here if he’s at his best. 11. Oh Deer is on debut and her latest trial was OK. She could sneak into the placings. 13. Livewire Lass is a filly in debut from a top stable and is worth including among the chances.

How to play it: Éclair Vitality WIN.

Race 5 - 3:15PM HODGES & CO WEALTH MANAGEMENT CLASS 1 (900 METRES)

3. Willingale finished third at Wyong before being spelled, then resumed with another third at this track a couple of weeks ago. She’s a winner over this distance and is rarely far from the action, having a win and five placings from nine starts.

Dangers: 7. Arafura Sea has been placed in each of her latest two starts and she can be in the thick of things again if she can run up to those efforts. 6. Provencal was a Muswellbrook winner back in March, and has been close-up in two runs since then. 8. Joyful Jink won at Quirindi three starts ago, and has been just behind the placings in both runs since then. She has place claims here.

How to play it: Willingale WIN.

Race 6 - 3:50PM SELECT EVENTS BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP (1300 METRES)

1. Senshi was a solid winner at Muswellbrook earlier in the year, and has since run three times at Newcastle with a second and a fifth at his latest two starts. The apprentice allowance should be to his advantage here and a bold showing is on the cards.

Dangers: 7. Zahdi has only won one from 13 starts but she has shown her share of ability. She was just behind the placings in good company on cup day here, then again ran fifth here last time out. She shouldn’t be underestimated. 11. Smart Shot has a handy record and has been placed in his latest two starts at Quirindi and Moree. He should run well here. 3. Turnaway was a winner at Tamworth four starts ago, and he’s been placed at Wellington and this track in his latest two runs. He can make an impact again.

How to play it: Senshi WIN.

Race 7 - 4:25PM SCONE EQUINE HOSPITAL BENCHMARK 66 HANDICAP (1000 METRES)

3. Restrictions fought on well when finishing second at Hawkesbury at his latest start, and he’s shown his share of ability having won two of nine.

Dangers: 7. Aquarter was a winner at Gunnedah back in December, then failed at Tamworth before being spelled. He resumed with a win at Muswellbrook and should be hard to hold out again. 5. Par Five hasn’t figured in the placings of late but he hasn’t been far away and can show up here if anywhere near his best. 13. Golden Cow led throughout to score at Dubbo last time out and could give cheek again here.

How to play it: Restrictions WIN.

How to play it: Joiselle WIN.

Best Bets:
Race 1 (3) Homeland.
Race 5 (3) Willingale.

Best Value:
Race 2 (10) Upwardly Mobile.
