John Schell's Tips For Scone (Friday)

By John Schell

Selections based on a soft track

Race 1 - 12:50PM WIDDEN MAIDEN PLATE (1600 METRES)

1. Hooligan Tommy finished third in a couple of runs at Newcastle and Hawkesbury earlier in the year then tackled the ATC Derby and failed to beat a runner home when thrown in the deep end. He since resumed with a solid second at Kembla Grange, before a midfield finish at the same track. He is in a race to suit here and should take plenty of beating.

Dangers: 7. Forrest Gump has been placed in both his starts at Wyong and Kembla Grange. He steps up in distance for this and should give them plenty to run down. 8. Perasta ran his best race yet when finishing third at Wyong over this distance at his latest start. He is on the up and can give a sight against these. 2. Kia Ora Gold has been placed in all three starts and was close-up at Newcastle when resuming. He should figure prominently again here.

How to play it: Hooligan Tommy WIN.

Race 2 - 1:25PM DARLEY CLASS 1 & MAIDEN PLATE (2200 METRES)

1. Another Fortune broke his maiden at Hawkesbury over 1500m back in June, and since was midfield at the same track before a fourth and a second at Moruya, the latest when close-up. This distance should suit and he should figure prominently.

Dangers: 2. Little Outlaw ran third at Queanbeyan two starts ago then was midfield at Tuncurry when last produced. He has solid claims in this. 6. Tina’s Rock ran eighth in the same race Little Outlaw contested last time out, and is capable of improvement here. 5. My Gem has only won once from 51 starts but has finished fourth in each of her latest two starts at Moree and Scone. This isn’t overly tough and she could sneak into the minor money.

How to play it: Another Fortune WIN.

Race 3 - 2:00PM ROBERT THOMPSON CLASS 1 HANDICAP (1100 METRES)

3. She’s All It has a great record with a win and five placings from eight starts. She won at Hawkesbury in May, and has since run third and fourth at Newcastle before a last start second at Wyong as equal favourite. She’s drawn well here and should take a power of beating.

Dangers: 4. Release Point won on debut at Narromine, and followed that up with a seventh at Tamworth when not beaten far. He’s had a trial leading into this and is worth plenty of thought. 8. Ritzsun debuted with an all the way win at this track as a short-priced favourite and must be considered a leading chance again with a repeat of that, while 7. You Have To Go resumed with a solid third at Muswellbrook and could be placed again here without surprising.

How to play it: She’s All It WIN.

Race 4 - 2:40PM ARROWFIELD COUNTRY BOOSTED MAIDEN PLATE (1100 METRES)

5. Yanabah is a So You Think four-year-old on debut here. He’s had two trials for a second at this track and a win at Tanworth, and has the advantage of an apprentice claim in this.

Dangers: 7. Lunaire resumed with a strong finishing second at this track and should be improved for this event. She should be in the thick of things. 3. Manik has finished fourth in each of his two starts and resumes from a spell here after a solid trial. 4. Nor Nor West is on debut but has been fitted with a number of trials and should not be underestimated.

How to play it: Yanabah EACH WAY.

Race 5 - 3:15PM COOLMORE BENCHMARK 82 HANDICAP (1600 METRES)

4. King Kikau was placed second at Hawkesbury and Newcastle earlier in the year, and since resumed with a seventh at Taree. He will strip fitter for that run and can improve enough to be a winning chance here.

Dangers: 1. Vincenzo has a handy record and has been tackling harder races in some of his most recent runs. He has the talent to give this a major shake. 8. Subuki has tackled city and provincial grade at his last two starts and should be primed for this. 11. Borrowed Luck was placed at Tamworth before finishing last on the Kensington track. She since ran well when fourth at Muswellbrook.

How to play it: King Kikau WIN.

Race 6 - 3:55PM INGLIS MAIDEN HANDICAP (1300 METRES)

1. Cerons ran second in the Maribyrnong Trial on debut at Flemington last spring, then finished sixth in the Skyline behind Storm Boy leading into the Golden Slipper. He was spelled after that run and has won two trials in good style leading into this resuming run. He should take plenty of beating despite the wide draw.

Dangers: 7. Dream Smart has been placed in two of six starts and has shown enough ability to be rated a top chance here. 10. Sheriff’s Star ran third at Kembla Grange on debut, and there’s no reason he won’t run well again in this line-up. 3. Éclair Vitality was placed at this track at his second start and has the talent to figure in the money again.

How to play it: Cerons WIN.

Race 7 - 4:30PM NATIONAL JOCKEYS TRUST CLASS 3 HANDICAP (1300 METRES)

1. Point Basse had won three races and finished second in the other, all at this track, from August to November last year. He resumed with a solid enough effort in Highway grade at Rosehill and will find this easier.

Dangers: 10. Keitany ran last as an odds-on favourite at Tamworth when last produced but won there the start prior and ran second at Gunnedah when resuming. A sharp improvement is on the cards. 5. Sixfootone ran well when placed at Newcastle at his last start and can be placed again with a repeat, while 6. Jinsoku has won two of his last three starts and has good claims again.

How to play it: Point Basse WIN.

Race 8 - 5:10PM MUSWELLBROOK FORD BENCHMARK 66 HANDICAP (1000 METRES)

5. King’s Duty is a winner of two of 14 starts and resumed from a spell with a fourth at Newcastle when beaten less than a length. He was a late scratching behind the barriers from a recent Wyong race and has since has a trial to prepare for this. He’s drawn well and is ready to win again.

Dangers: 4. I Am Sugoi won his first two starts at Echuca ad Corowa, then was down the track at Wagga and Albury before being spelled. He resumes here on the back of two trials in which he’s performed well, and should sprint well fresh. 3. Sir Freddie finished second at this track two starts ago, then won in Highway grade at Randwick last time out. He has solid form for this event. 1. Ranuncula is resuming for a new stable and has had a trial in preparation. He goes well fresh and at this track.

How to play it: King’s Duty WIN.

Best Bets:
Race 3 (3) She’s All It.
Race 8 (5) King’s Duty.

Best Value:
Race 4 (5) Yanabah.
