John Schell's Tips For Scone (Friday)

By John Schell

Selections based on a good track

Race 1 - 1:05PM THE TONY WHITELAW COUNTRY BOOSTED MAIDEN PLATE (900 METRES)

9. Altisima is resuming from a spell having finished second on debut at Muswellbrook in April. She showed speed in that event and has had two trials leading into this to ensure she is ready to return with a bold showing.

Dangers: 8. Magic Shot is making his race debut here and has had two barrier trials and has been placed in each of them. He has the advantage of gate one. 10. Fuld’s Doubt was down the track on debut at Dubbo but has won a barrier trial leading into this resuming run. She’s drawn well here and has claims. 1. Dozen Kilpatrick showed speed at Moree last time out and a similar effort here would see him figuring in the placings.

How to play it: Altisima WIN.

Race 2 - 1:40PM MAGPIE GIN BENCHMARK 66 HANDICAP (1100 METRES)

1. Sumptuary is a lightly raced mare that has only had four starts for two wins and as many placings. She finished third behind promising sprinter Mogo Magic at Randwick earlier this year and has had two solid trials to prepare for this return to racing.

Dangers: 5. Crop Duster had been racing in TAB Highway company in the city before finishing fourth at Dubbo last time out when hitting the line well enough. 4. The Chosen One was just behind the placings at Tuncurry and not beaten far when last produced. He can be placed this time. 3. Super Freds comes out of the same race as The Chosen One and wasn’t beaten far either. A placing wouldn’t surprise in this.

How to play it: 1,5 QUINELLA.

Race 3 - 2:20PM BRONNIE STOKES COUNTRY BOOSTED BM66 HANDICAP (1400 METRES)

3. The Hungarian was in good form last preparation, winning two starts at Dubbo either side of a strong fifth in TAB Highway company at Randwick. He’s had two trials to prepare for this return to racing and has the services of Aaron Bullock.

Dangers: 4. What A Peach has performed well in two runs back from a spell and is set to give plenty of cheek here from a good barrier and with the advantage of the apprentice claim. 5. Titled Tycoon has been ultra consistent of late, with the only blemish being a down the track TAB Highway effort three starts ago. 9. Herne Hill has also been racing well of late and has the inside alley.

How to play it: The Hungarian WIN.

Race 4 - 2:55PM KIA ORA CLASS 1 HANDICAP (1300 METRES)

3. Smokin’ Crazy has only had two starts and was spelled after a debut fourth at Newcastle this time last year. She resumed with a win at Newcastle in April over Choice Legend, with that mare running well when placed at Warwick Farm on Wednesday. Smokin’ Crazy finished second in a trial in preparation for this and can resume as a winner.

Dangers: 2. Point Basse has looked good in his two race starts, with a debut win at this track being followed by a close-up second here behind Elleves. 5. Lady Percival’s is a stablemate of Point Basse and is resuming here. She can sprint well fresh. 1. Island Legend resumed with a second pacing at Armidale and could be placed here without surprising.

How to play it: 2,3 QUINELLA.

Race 5 - 3:35PM MUSWELLBROOK DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING C2 HANDICAP (1600 METRES)

8. Gripping is first-up from a spell here but has a handy overall record with a win and four placings from 10 starts. He finished third on a heavy track at Murwillumbah before being spelled and has had two trials, winning the latest, to be readied for this.

Dangers: 2. Golden Button followed-up a resuming second at Tamworth with an impressive win at Tuncurry. He should be hard to beat again here. 1. Shihab is also coming into this on the back of a last start Tuncurry win and can be thereabouts again. 6. Higher Hand is a last start winner and has gate one which should ensure he gets every chance here.

How to play it: Gripping EACH WAY.

Race 6 - 4:10PM SCONE RSL MAIDEN PLATE (1100 METRES)

11. Midnight Opal is on debut in this for the Nathan Doyle stable. He has looked the goods winning each of his two trials at Gosford an on the Beaumont track at Newcastle. He’s drawn well enough here and has Koby Jennings in the saddle.

Dangers: 8. Funny Feeling is also on debut here and she has had three trials this campaign to prepare. She’s shown enough in those performances to be rated a chance against these. 2. Noble One is drawn wide but has looked solid in two trials leading into this debut. 7. Dunmore Lass is a first starter in the Kristen Buchanan stable and she’s been tuned up for this with a couple of barrier trials. She’s drawn well in gate one.

How to play it: Midnight Opal WIN.

Race 7 - 4:50PM COOLMORE SUPER MAIDEN HANDICAP (1400 METRES)

1. Night Patra has struck form being placed in his latest two starts at Tamworth and this track. He hit the line well for a last start second and this race looks well within his reach.

Dangers: 2. Shadowist finished last at Sale when on debut earlier this year but is resuming here and has had the benefit of two barrier trials. He should not be underestimated with Aaron Bullock on board. 4. Oakfield Eagle ran well enough when resuming at Kempsey to be rated a chance in this. 13. Read ‘Em And Weep has had the benefit of a recent trial at this track and has gate one in this.

How to play it: Night Patra WIN.

Race 8 - 5:25PM GRAZIHER MAGAZINE CLASS 2 HANDICAP (1100 METRES)

3. Rematch had three starts earlier this year and followed a Tamworth debut victory with second placings at this track and Muswellbrook, the latest as an odds-on favourite. Rematch has had two trials in preparation for this return to racing, the latest resulting in a narrow win at this track. He’s drawn ideally in this.

Dangers: 4. The Escape has performed well in each of his three race starts to date, the latest being a resuming second at this track. He’s progressive and should figure prominently. 6. Divine Vicky is resuming here but she is yet to miss a place from three starts and also has plenty of upside. 5. Waterworld was placed at Coffs Harbour when first-up from a spell and could be thereabouts again.

How to play it: Rematch WIN.

Best Bets:
Race 3 (3) The Hungarian.
Race 6 (11) Midnight Opal.

Best Value:
Race 5 (8) Gripping.
