John Schell's Tips For Sapphire Coast (Monday)

By John Schell

Selections based on a good track

Race 1 - 2:10PM DUCI'S MERIMBULA & ISABELLA FRANCHI MEMORIAL C1 (1200 METRES)

4. Magic Alwyns was second-up from a spell when she won at this track at her latest start. She’s only lightly raced and she has a solid overall record. From the good gate here, she should be right in the mix again.

Dangers: 3. Constantinou has been thereabouts of late and she only needs to run up to her latest efforts to be a leading contender in this. 1. Karuta King isn’t the most reliable of types but has claims here on best form. 5. Miss Givings won well two starts ago at Nowra and can be a threat against these with a repeat.

How to play it: Magic Alwyns WIN.

Race 2 - 2:50PM TILBA VALLEY WINERY & ALE HOUSE CLASS 3 HANDICAP (1600 METRES)

1. Direct Affect finished last at Kembla Grange last time out when beaten 10 lengths but that was in stronger grade than what he is facing in this. He has the services of top jockey Nick Heywood and the drop in grade should suit. He is the one to beat.

Dangers: 8. Lonhro Lily and 3. Hope Uno can both show up without surprising. 4. Les Goh has drawn the outside but has talent and should perform well.

How to play it: Direct Affect WIN.

Race 3 - 3:25PM EAT FESTIVAL MERIMBULA MAIDEN PLATE (1000 METRES)

7. Tolima has had two starts back from a spell and she has performed well in each of them. She come into this on the back of a last start third at Canberra and she only needs to run up to that to be the one to beat in this.

Dangers: 4. Button Inthe Plate is a six-year-old mare on debut but is a recent trial winner that warrants respect. 9. Kickamushu has performed well in better races than this and warrants plenty of thought. 8. Beauer is a trial winner on debut and a bold showing would not shock.

How to play it: Tolima WIN.

Race 4 - 4:05PM BAR MONTI MERIMBULA MAIDEN PLATE (1600 METRES)

4. Mulvader is lightly raced with only four starts to his name. He’s been placed in three of them at his latest three starts at Newcastle and Kembla Grange, the latest two at that track. That form looks good for a race like this and he looks the one to beat here.

Dangers: 6. Fudge is lightly raced and hasn’t been disgraced in any of her starts to date. She can show up here without surprising. 8. Mystic Diva has been taking on better grade than what she meets here and she rates as one of the leading contenders. 3. Flying Jewel is in a top stable and can figure in the placings.

How to play it: Mulvader WIN.

Race 5 - 4:40PM MORMORS MERIMBULA MAIDEN HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

1. Craving Magic has only had four starts but has been placed in three of them. He finished second at this track two starts ago then started favourite at Queanbeyan last time out when finishing second again. He’s drawn well in this event and should take plenty of beating against these.

Dangers: 3. Laguna Seca has been placed in two of his four starts and he looms as one of the top chances here if he maintains that form. 5. Take The Bribe wasn’t disgraces at his only start and rates as a chance again here. 7. Steamed Hams hasn’t been far away in her runs and a bold showing wouldn’t surprise.

How to play it: Craving Magic WIN.

Race 6 - 5:20PM MERIMBULA AQUARIUM AND WHARF BM74 HANDICAP (1000 METRES)

7. Merc is first-up from a spell in this but he is a handy sprinter on his day with a solid record. He won at this track earlier this year then was placed at Moruya, Goulburn and Canberra, before finishing midfield, when not beaten far, at Wagga, during the carnival at that track. Merc is down in the weights here and can give plenty of cheek.

Dangers: 3. Incentive is resuming and has a solid record and warrants respect. 6. Mooshaka is a last start Albury winner and her overall record is strong. 4. Selhurst Park is resuming from a spell and is a first-up winner.

How to play it: Merc EACH WAY.

Race 7 - 5:55PM GRAND MATRIARCH VODKA BM58 HANDICAP (1400 METRES)

3. Spiritly was just behind the placings at Wagga in August before scoring a strong win at that track, albeit narrowly. He was since not beaten far when midfield in TAB Highway grade at Rosehill then was a close-up third at Kembla Grange last time out. He only needs to run up to those efforts to be rated a leading chance again in this.

Dangers: 2. Snappy Jim has been just behind the placings in his latest two starts and he can figure in the placings here without surprising. 4. I’m Not Leaving has been racing well and hasn’t been far away of late. 5. Last Quest has also been around the mark of late and a bold showing would not surprise.

How to play it: Spiritly WIN.

Best Bets:
Race 3 (7) Tolima.
Race 4 (4) Mulvader.

Best Value:
Race 6 (7) Merc.
