John Schell's Tips For Nowra (Sunday)

By John Schell

Selections based on a soft track

Race 1 - 1:31PM STROUD HOMES COUNTRY BOOSTED MAIDEN PLATE (1100 METRES)

11. Straight Fire is on debut and has had one trial leading into this. She finished fourth in that hitout at Canberra when beaten just under 1.5 lengths. She looks to have potential and can make an impact despite the awkward draw.

Dangers: 5. The Main Event ran well on debut when finishing second at Moruya. He only needs to run up to that to be hard to beat again. 10. Miss Scoop is a filly on debut and she warrants thought on the back of a Goulburn trial in which she faced handy opposition. 1. Bedouin Bear has run well in each of his two runs back from a spell and is worth including.

How to play it: Straight Fire EACH WAY.

Race 2 - 2:06PM WOBBEGONGS WSC CJB BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

2. Killer Kerr has built up a solid record with one win and a further six placings from just 10 starts. Killer Kerr looked good when breaking her maiden at this track two starts ago and she went down narrowly when second at Wyong at her only start since. She’s been kept up to the mark for this with a recent Hawkesbury trial.

Dangers: 1. Seal Team Six has won two of his six starts and wasn’t disgraced when resuming with a fifth at Moruya. He should race on the speed and give cheek. 3. Single Crown has been tackling tougher fields lately than what he meets in this and should be in the thick of things. 5. Atomic Forty Seven is resuming and has won at this track.

How to play it: Killer Kerr WIN.

Race 3 - 2:41PM COUNTRY MOTOR COMPANY MAIDEN HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

1. Noble One has been placed in six of his seven starts and is drawn ideally in this. He’s been placed in both runs on this track and in each run over this distance. He battled on well for a last start third at Goulburn and this looks well within his reach.

Dangers: 7. Scorpion Jack is yet to be placed from four starts and is resuming from a spell here. He’s shown improvement in his two most recent trials and has the advantage of gate one. 2. Iconic Treasure was big odds-on debut at Wyong but ran well enough when finishing third. 5. Zale has been down the track in each of his three runs in city grade but showed some improvement when resuming last time out and shouldn’t be underestimated here.

How to play it: Noble One WIN.

Race 4 - 3:16PM RON SLATER MEMORIAL CLASS 1 HANDICAP (1100 METRES)

7. Dark Glitter had two trials before debuting with a strong finishing victory at Canberra. She should be even further improved by that effort and from a good barrier in this she can go on with the job.

Dangers: 4. Write This Way is resuming from a spell and has looked good in a couple of trials in preparation. 5. Serafima defeated Write This Way in a Kembla Grange maiden last August and is fitter for one run back from a spell. 3. Decisive Lass is resuming from a spell and should sprint well fresh.

How to play it: Dark Glitter EACH WAY.

Race 5 - 3:51PM HANLONS WINDOWS CLASS 1 & MAIDEN PLATE (1600 METRES)

8. Denaru powered to the line when finishing second at Moruya four starts ago then was just behind the placings when fifth in a Highway at Randwick. She failed to beat a runner home in a small field at Kembla Grange before again running well when second at Canberra last time out. She is suited at this distance and looms as one of the hardest to beat.

Dangers: 2. Just Boogie was a Gosford winner three starts ago and wasn’t beaten far at the same track last time out. 4. Open Sky is a last start Kembla Grange placegetter and is worth thought again on that effort. 5. Stand Guard led when finishing fourth at Goulburn at his latest start and has place claims in this.

How to play it: Denaru WIN.

Race 6 - 4:30PM HQ INSURANCE MAIDEN PLATE (1400 METRES)

14. Sabana had a trial last August before having a break and then returned with a couple more trials before debuting with a solid second when narrowly beaten after running home well. She looks to have plenty of upside and only needs to overcome a wide barrier in order to be hard to hold out against these.

Dangers: 4. Merchant Speed wasn’t beaten far on debut at Goulburn and then followed that up with a close-up fourth at this track. He can figure prominently in this. 1. Bobby is King has been placed in two of his eight starts and while he was disappointing last time out, he is capable of improving in this. 8. Avadiora has had two runs back from a spell and she could sneak into the minor money.

How to play it: Sabana WIN.

Race 7 - 5:10PM SHOALHAVEN RUGBY CLUB BM58 HANDICAP (1400 METRES)

3. Captain Corelli led and fought on strongly to score at this track two starts ago when double figure odds. He since led them up again at Cowra and battled on well enough to finish fourth behind Lockdown Gamble. He should give a good sight again.

Dangers: 1. The Herald has a big weight to contend with but is a three-time winner from 14 starts and has a good second-up record. 7. Occhiata justified her odds-on favouritism to score at Canberra at her latest start. She can go on with the job in this. 6. Highland Falcon wasn’t beaten far at Moruya when last produced and is not out of this.

How to play it: Captain Corelli EACH WAY.

Best Bets:
ace 2 (2) Killer Kerr.
Race 3 (1) Noble One.

Best Value:
Race 4 (7) Dark Glitter.
