John Schell's Tips For Murwillumbah (Friday)

By John Schell

Selections based on a heavy track

Race 1 - 12:45PM MCGREGOR GOURLAY AGRICULTURAL SERV. TYGALGAH CUP (2020M)

4. Sherriff Cody has been racing well of late. He ran second in a couple runs before finishing fourth in the Grafton Cup Prelude. He since won at Grafton before a solid fourth at Coffs Harbour when last produced. He looks well suited in this.

Dangers: 5. Perovic was a Lismore winner in June then failed to beat a runner home in Highway grade at Randwick before a last start seventh at Doomben. He is up in distance for this and can improve. 1. Bellaciaociao has been safely held of late but has solid formlines around horses he meets in this. 3. Beckford wasn’t too far away at Coffs Harbour when last produced and is far from the worst here.

How to play it: Sherriff Cody WIN.

Race 2 - 1:20PM EVA SMITH MEMORIAL MAIDEN SHOWCASE HANDICAP (1550 METRES)

1. Half Listening is on debut here and has had three trials leading into this event. He failed to beat a runner home in his first trial earlier in the year, and since then has finished third at Deagon and Murwillumbah. He’s drawn wide here but has upside and should be in the finish.

Dangers: 2. Casebolt has been placed in two of eight starts and has finished fourth in each of her latest three starts. She can show up against this line-up. 3. High Class Roller failed to beat a runner home at Beaudesert at his second start, and he can show sharp improvement on that in this. 8. Three Graces finished second in a couple of races at this track in May and June, and since then finished fourth at Ipswich. This looks a suitable race.

How to play it: Half Listening WIN.

Race 3 - 1:55PM SEE CIVIL BENCHMARK 58 SHOWCASE HANDICAP (1100 METRES)

1. Bravely has a handy record with two wins to his names from just seven starts. He won a couple at Grafton in January and February and then was placed at Eagle Farm before following a fifth at Doomben with a down the track effort in the Daybreak Lover at listed grade before being spelled. He’s had two trials to prepare for this.

Dangers: 3. Written Fame loomed as the winner before being run down late by Straya Pride at Lismore when they last clashed. 3. Straya Pride lines up again in this and should give a bold sight again if he can run up to that effort. 4. Figment won at Armidale and Moree earlier in the year then ran third at Tamworth before being spelled. She’s primed to run well here after a recent trial.

How to play it: Bravely WIN.

Race 4 - 2:35PM WILLIAMS GROUP AUSTRALIA CLASS 2 HANDICAP (1550 METRES)

2. Cavaup is a two-time winner from 14 starts and was second-up from a spell at Coffs Harbour when last produced when finishing a solid third. He’s drawn well here and can bounce back to winning form.

Dangers: 3. Showman was placed at Ipswich at his latest start and he has a strong overall record. This looks a nice race for him to run well in. 1. Boy Loves To Run finished third at Casino at his latest run and has the talent to make an impact. 7. Son Of Heroic impressed on a heavy track here two starts ago and should run well again with a repeat of that.

How to play it: Cavaup WIN.

Race 5 - 3:10PM MURWILLUMBAH SERVICES CLUB SUPER MAIDEN PLATE (1200M)

10. Climactic ran fourth in the Golden Gift on debut late last year, and since resumed with a third at Doomben as favourite when only beaten a little over two lengths. This is a much easier event than those races and he can break through with a win here.

Dangers: 4. Starvitzel has finished third in each of his two runs back from a spell, and only needs to run up to those efforts to be a leading contender here. 3. Siglo De Oro resumes for a new stable here and has shown enough in his career in order to be a chance against these. 2. Not A Single Drink is on debut here and has had three trials since changing stables. He shouldn’t be underestimated here.

How to play it: Climactic WIN.

Race 6 - 3:50PM BOUTIQUE RACING & BREEDING B F CHARMAN SPRINT (1200 METRES)

4. Surfers Royale comes into this on the back of a last start Doomben victory. He ran well when fourth at Eagle Farm before that and that form looks great for this event.

Dangers: 3. Starzam is fresh for this having run well in a number of events in Queensland earlier in the year. He’s had a recent trial at the Gold Coast and wasn’t beaten far in that. A bold showing is on the cards here. 1. Majorelle has won six of his 16 starts and has been placed in a further five. He’s handy with solid claims here. 6. Lady Wardell was a close-up fourth at Grafton two starts ago, and since then wasn’t beaten far again when third at Doomben. She has the ability to measure up.

How to play it: Surfers Royale WIN.

Race 7 - 4:25PM RIVERVIEW HOTEL MURWILLUMBAH CUP (1550 METRES)

*BIG DANCE ELIGIBILITY*

9. Crazy Train wasn’t beaten far when midfield at Doomben two starts ago, then ran a great race again when fourth at Rosehill behind I Am Famous. She is a talented mare at best and has drawn well to get a good run here.

Dangers: 10. Bean Foggy hit the line well when second at Grafton at his latest start. His form before that was solid and he gets his chance to perform well in good company here. 7. Cranky Harry bolted in against Highway grade at Randwick two starts ago, then finished fifth when beaten less than a length at the Sunshine Coast when last seen. He’s an up and comer with strong claims here. 1. Lord Ardmore has the rails alley here and has a couple of recent city placings to his name.

How to play it: Crazy Train EACH WAY.

Race 8 - 5:00PM TAB WE'RE ON CLASS 1 SHOWCASE HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

5. Rich Minx has only had three starts. She wasn’t beaten far as favourite at Doomben on debut, then resumed from a spell to score at the Sunshine Coast last December. She resumed again with a third at the Sunshine Coast and should be better for that hitout.

Dangers: 3. Edge Of Seventeen resumed from a spell with a strong Lismore victory. That was on the back of a second placing at Eagle Farm and that form looks good for this despite the wide barrier. 1. Immortality resumed with a good fourth at Grafton and backed that up with a close-up second at Lismore. 2. Mean Approach has a consistent record and is well up to running well in this.

How to play it: Rich Minx WIN.

Best Bets:
Race 6 (4) Surfers Royale.
Race 8 (5) Rich Minx.

Best Value:
Race 7 (9) Crazy Train.
