John Schell's Tips For Gundagai (Tuesday)

By John Schell

Selections based on a soft track

Race 1 - 1:25PM HANH PREMIUM LIGHT CG&E MAIDEN PLATE (1400 METRES):

2. Casanova hadn’t done much in his first three starts before joining a new stable and finishing a close-up third at Hawkesbury when leading. He looks talented enough to give this event a shake if he can repeat the last start effort.

Dangers: 1. Call Me Grouchy was placed at Moruya when last produced and his previous form was solid enough to be rated a leading chance in this. 6. Rocas Grandes has been placed in three of his eight starts and finished third at Goulburn two starts ago. This looks within his reach. 7. Son Of A Boom has had three starts and finished fourth in two of them. He can measure up here.

How to play it: Casanova WIN.

Race 2 - 2:05PM KOSCIUSZKO TICKETS ON SALE NOW F&M MAIDEN PLATE (1400 METRES):

4. Debout Belle raced on a heavy track at Albury when last produced and finished second. That was her first placing from 10 starts and she has Nick Heywood taking the ride which is to her advantage.

Dangers: 1. After The One has had nine starts and has only been placed in one of them, but she has shown enough ability to be rated a contender here. She has been midfield at Albury and Wagga at her latest two starts and is worth thought here. 12. Ziggy Rose debuts here on the back of one trial and she can improve here. 10. Vella Icon has been placed once and has shown the talent to be given some thought here.

How to play it: Debout Belle WIN.

Race 3 - 2:40PM TOOHEYS EXTRA DRY COUNTRY BOOSTED MAIDEN HCP (1180 METRES):

1. Ghost Walker is lightly raced with only two starts to his name and he debuted with a fourth at Wagga before finishing third at the same track in January and then being spelled. He resumes here on the back of a third in a Queanbeyan trial and this looks a nice race for him to resume in.

Dangers: 3. Win The Day looked good in a couple of trials before debuting with a fourth at Moruya. She wasn’t beaten too far in that event and can measure up in this with a repeat. 5. Reward In Time has been placed in five of 14 starts and looks to have the talent to make an impact here. 6. A Double Degree has missed a place in both starts but has shown enough to be rated a place chance in this.

How to play it: Ghost Walker WIN.

Race 4 - 3:15PM NSW JOCKEYS ASSOCIATION CLASS 1 HCP (1000 METRES):

2. Aqualina’s Star has had four starts and has shown plenty of ability with two seconds and a win to her name. She raced on the speed and fought on too well to score as favourite at Albury when last produced and if she can run up to that then she should be hard to hold out again in this.

Dangers: 1. Brial Rose has had three starts for a win and two placings. She is a last start Narrandera winner over subsequent winner Maybe Maureen, and has run well in a trial leading into this. 3. Miss Belgium finished last at Albury at her latest start, and she was down the track at Nowra before that. She has a win and a second to her name and is far from the worst here if she can run up to her best. 7. Sutton Vella raced on the speed to score a win at Canberra at her third start in a race and she only needs to run up to that to be a leading chance here.

How to play it: Aqualina’s Star WIN.

Race 5 - 3:50PM FURPHY BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP (1180 METRES):

3. Heavenly Legend has shown his share of ability with one win to his name from six starts. He won by a big margin at the Sapphire Coast in February and since then has been just behind the placings in two runs at Moruya and Queanbeyan either side of a spell. He is from a good stable and Nick Heywood takes the ride.

Dangers: 5. Straight Fire has shown plenty of ability in her career with two placings and a Wagga win from her first three starts. She failed in the Albury Guineas before being spelled and resumes here. 6. You Wish has a win and four seconds from just the nine starts and despite missing the placings in her latest two starts, she has the ability to improve into this. 2. Galactic Angel has failed to fire in both runs since resuming from a spell, but on her best form she has the ability to figure in the finish.

How to play it: Heavenly Legend EACH WAY.

Race 6 - 4:25PM XXXX GOLD BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP (1800 METRES):

5. Will To Excel was a winner at Orange last December and then backed that up with a third at the same track before an eighth at Kembla Grange and then a second at Gosford before being spelled following a disappointing effort at the Sapphire Coast when beating all bar one runner. He is yet to win first-up from a spell but doesn’t strike an overly hard race here.

Dangers: 8. Mount Hotham has a good record with a win and five placings from 11 starts. He finished second at Wagga at his latest start and is worth including among the main chances here. 9. Super View hasn’t been beaten too far in his most recent runs and if he’s anywhere near his best he can make an impact against these. 12. Bandolero was down the track at Taree last time out but finished second here before that. He has the ability to make an impact here.

How to play it: Will To Excel EACH WAY.

Race 7 - 5:00PM NATIONAL JOCKEYS TRUST CLASS 2 HANDICAP (1400 METRES):

3. Acheson is showing plenty of potential with two wins and two placings from five starts. He led throughout to win at Moruya when last produced and can win again with a repeat of that.

Dangers: 4. Zontawah has won two of his five starts and has finished midfield in each of the other three at Wagga. He has the ability to make an impact against these. 6. Hobbsy is a two-time winner from 11 starts and comes into this on the back of a couple of solid recent runs. 9. Ruff has been placed in three of his latest four starts and should be given plenty of respect here if he can run up to those efforts.

How to play it: Acheson WIN.

Best Bets:
Race 3 (1) Ghost Walker.
Race 5 (3) Heavenly Legend.

Best Value:
Race 6 (5) Will To Excel.
