John Schell's Tips For Gundagai Cup Day (Sunday)

By John Schell

Selections based on a good track

Race 1 - 12:05PM HAHN 3.5 MAIDEN PLATE (1400 METRES)

12. Sister Shay has only had three starts and has finished in the latest two of them at Wagga and Albury. She can race on the speed again here from the good draw. 11. Qismah debuted with a solid third at Sandown and was then midfield at Albury in the same event Sister Shay contested. She can show up here without surprising. 1. Kotaishi is a city placegetter that resumed for a new stable with a second at Canberra and can be thereabouts in his best form. 7. Awesome Icon has shown glimpses of ability and has the advantage of gate one.

How to play it: Sister Shay WIN.

Race 2 - 12:40PM WAGGA & DISTRICT RACING SUPPORTERS CLUB MAIDEN (1180 METRES)

6. Christmas Star has finished third in five of her eight starts and is fresh for this having finished third at Orange at the end of February. She’s drawn ideally here. 2. Bessie La Belle has been placed in three of her four starts and resumed with a third at Albury. She can be prominent here. 3. Roullottie is talented with eight placings to her name from 12 starts and another bold showing is on the cards. 1. Reef Road ran sixth at Wagga on debut last week and is worth thought.

How to play it: Christmas Star WIN.

Race 3 - 1:20PM RAY SILBURN CLASS 1 & MAIDEN PLATE (1800 METRES)

8. Ana Carolina followed a close-up second on the Beaumont track at Newcastle with a last start third at Goulburn and has her first rub for a new stable here. She has the talent to break through. 7. Southern Dancer has been midfield in her latest two starts and has the ability to run a bold race, while 2. First Day will find this easier than what she has been facing of late. 4. Kermando was placed last time out and could surprise at good odds.

How to play it: Ana Carolina WIN.

Race 4 - 2:00PM TOOHEYS 3YO MAIDEN HANDICAP (1000 METRES)

8. Isagura resumes here and has been placed a couple of times including a second at Nowra before the break. She has the talent to make an impact fresh. 5. Riverina Lightning resumes here and will find this easier than her Moonee Valley failure at her latest run. 11. Starzzaborn has been placed in two of four starts, and this is her home track. 6. Sheridan Street is on debut from a wide gate but was placed in a trial.

How to play it: Isagura WIN.

Race 5 - 2:40PM XXXX GOLD CLASS 2 HANDICAP (1400 METRES)

4. Dupli Kate hit the line hard to win at Canberra when resuming from a spell and has been close-up in both runs at that track since then. She has a touch of class and should be winning again in this. 7. Kerma Art has been racing well enough of late to be rated a place chance despite taking on tougher opposition. 5. Sydney Gal was fourth as favourite at Albury when last produced and is worth another chance, while 1. Prince Of Arendell failed when resuming at Wyong but won at Queanbeyan before the break.

How to play it: Dupli Kate WIN.

Race 6 - 3:20PM HAHN SUPER DRY CLASS 2 HANDICAP (1400 METRES)

2. Another Fortune was a resuming winner at Kembla Grange and while he’s been unplaced in three runs since this does look a nice race for him. 7. Railway Avenue won at Cowra three starts ago and a repeat of that would have him in the mix. 5. Turnaway resumes here, and he has a solid place record. He’s worth thought. 6. Jannik has been close-up in three runs since winning at Goulburn and has claims.

How to play it: Another Fortune EACH WAY.

Race 7 - 4:04PM SOUNDS OF THE MOUNTAINS CLASS 1 HANDICAP (1000 METRES)

9. One Hard Lady led on debut at Albury and dashed clear to score by a big margin. She’s drawn wide here but looks talented and can go on with the job. 7. Zoutempus was having his second start when racing in a forward position to score at Goulburn last time out and he can be prominent again. 2. Teylu won well at Canberra before a last start second at Goulburn and that form should stand up, while 1. Aegipan comes here after a last start Queanbeyan placing.

How to play it: One Hard Lady WIN.

Race 8 - 4:40PM XXXX GOLD GUNDAGAI CUP (1800 METRES)

4. County Kilkenny was third-up from a spell when powering home to score in the Albury Mile when last produced. The extra distance suits and he looks the one to beat again from the good gate. 11. Star Buyer is on the quick back-up after a second at Wagga last weekend and another prominent showing is expected. 12. Sturn Words won at Canberra before failing in the Southern Wild Card at Goulburn. This is easier. 3. Baledon wasn’t too far away in the Albury Mile and has the class to give this a shake.

How to play it: County Kilkenny WIN.

Race 9 - 5:20PM MARGARET KEENAN MEMORIAL BM66 HANDICAP (1180 METRES)

6. Chasing A Quid was a strong winner at Wagga three starts ago and has performed well in both runs since then. He should get every chance from the good draw. 2. Keikoku has been racing well and scored at Wagga two starts ago. He is racing well enough to give this a shake. 5. Ronny Rock Art is rarely far from the action and has place claims, while 10. Jinsoku has run well when fourth in each of two runs since resuming.

How to play it: Chasing A Quid EACH WAY.

Best Bets:
Race 1 (12) Sister Shay.
Race 3 (8) Ana Carolina.

Best Value:
Race 9 (6) Chasing A Quid.
