John Schell's Tips For Goulburn Cup Day (Sunday)

By John Schell

Selections based on a soft track

Race 1 - 12:30PM JEWELL BUILDERS MAIDEN SHOWCASE PLATE (1200 METRES)

6. Highway Strip debuted at Moruya back in April and ran a good race to finish second. He resumes from a spell here and has had a quiet trial at Moruya in preparation. Nick Heywood takes the ride and he can return to racing as a winner.

Dangers: 5. Stern Looks is on debut and has had one trial leading into this. He’s a well- bred gelding that should be ready to perform well here. 7. Dekadance has been placed in each of her two starts, and a repeat of that form would have her hard to beat here. 1. Ghost Walker has been placed in two of three starts and has the talent to give this a shake on the back of that form.

How to play it: Highway Strip WIN.

Race 2 - 1:10PM GOULBURN EXPRESS FREIGHT MAIDEN HANDICAP (1600 METRES)

2. Rossellini has only had three starts but she has figured in the placings in the latest two of them at the Sapphire Coast and Nowra. The step up to the mile should suit and she’s drawn well.

Dangers: 4. Stand In Line has been placed in three of seven starts including his latest two starts at this track and Moruya. This isn’t overly hard and he is worth including as a leading contender. 8. Phazed has been placed in one of five starts and was beaten less than two lengths at Newcastle last time out. She can figure prominently here. 9. Cha Cha Cha is yet to be placed in her career but has shown enough to be given a place chance against these.

How to play it: Rossellini WIN.

Race 3 - 1:50PM NEWGATE FARM GUY WALTER - F&M CLASS 3 HANDICAP (1300 METRES)

3. Occhiata was a winner at Nowra three starts ago, and has since been just behind the placegetters in two Highway runs in town either side of a spell. She has a handy record and is set to bounce back to winning form here.

Dangers: 4. Stray has only won once from 24 starts but she has shown enough ability in her career to be rated a chance in this from the good barrier. She can improve sharply on her latest effort. 8. Skiesthelimit was close-up when a last start second at Nowra, and only needs to run up to that to be a top chance here. 10. Miss Stalwart resumed from a spell with a close second at Wagga and is well worth including among the main chances.

How to play it: Occhiata WIN.

Race 4 - 2:30PM GRAEME SPACKMAN/ GOULPRO BM66 HANDICAP (1600 METRES)

6. Nats Enough was a strong winner at this track back in June. He was since placed in a couple of Albury runs before a sixth at the same track when last produced. He has the talent on his day to give this a shake.

Dangers: 2. Chairman’s List has been racing well with a last start third at Moruya following a fifth at the Sapphire Coast. He’s still racing well and warrants respect in this. 12. Ruff has a win and seven placings from 16 starts. He battled on well for a last start placing at Gundagai and is not out of this. 13. Call Me Artie finished second at Casino when last produced and has place claims here.

How to play it: Nats Enough WIN.

Race 5 - 3:10PM GOULBURN PRODUCE CLASS 2 SHOWCASE HANDICAP (1600 METRES)

8. Ken’ker resumed with a solid fourth at this track behind Thoughtful, before breaking his maiden with a solid Sapphire Coast victory. He since ran well again when just nudged out by Order To Charge at Nowra. He has a wide alley to overcome here but is racing well enough to make an impact.

Dangers: 3. Order To Charge is a last start winner over Ken’ker. His form looks good and he should be in the thick of things again in this. 6. Lease went to the lead and fought on too strongly to score a solid victory at Newcastle at his latest start. He only needs to run up to that to be a top chance here. 4. Aunt Roberta resumed with a disappointing effort at Moruya but has the ability to lift on that.

How to play it: Ken’ker EACH WAY.

Race 6 - 3:50PM D ONE ACCOUNTING BM66 SHOWCASE HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

8. Iconic Treasure has only raced four times for a win at Nowra and a further two placings. He resumed from a spell with a fifth at Wyong and can improve sharply on that.

Dangers: 9. Sky Artist was placed at Scone before being spelled and resumed with a fourth at that track when not beaten far. That form looks good for this. 3. Septime has shown ability in his career and can make an impact here if anywhere near his best. 4. Breaking Ground is a last start winner that warrants thought again.

How to play it: Iconic Treasure WIN.

Race 7 - 4:25PM GOULBURN AUSTRALIA GOULBURN CUP (1400 METRES)

***BIG DANCE ELIGIBILITY***

11. Cliff House is a handy middle-distance performer which is resuming from a spell here. He is a first-up winner and has also scored over the 1400m distance of this event. He hasn’t raced since finishing a solid sixth to Fawkner Park in the Wagga Cup and has had a recent trial at Wagga behind rival Another One in preparation for this event. Expect him to sprint well fresh.

Dangers: 2. Kinloch is resuming from a spell and is a class galloper on his day. He’s drawn wide but has Nash Rawiller in the saddle which is to his advantage. 4. Another One is resuming from a spell on the back off a solid Wagga trial victory. He’s a classy galloper at best and should be primed to run well here. 5. Chorlton Lane has a solid record in his career and won a couple on end in Victoria earlier in the year. He’s been just behind the placings in his latest two starts and is well worth including among the main chances here.

How to play it: Cliff House EACH WAY.

Race 8 - 5:00PM HORIZON FINANCE GROUP CLASS 1 HANDICAP (1400 METRES)

9. No Second Thoughts has had three runs back from a spell and has been placed in each of them. She is well in this with the apprentice allowance and has drawn to advantage.

Dangers: 4. Fortingall won on debut at Kembla Grange then led and wasn’t beaten too far when seventh at Newcastle when last produced. 5. Struff ran third at Kembla Grange at her latest start and has the ability to make an impact here. 8. Capitol Hill is a last start Kembla Grange winner that can figure again here with a repeat of that.

How to play it: No Second Thoughts WIN.

Best Bets:
Race 3 (3) Occhiata.
Race 4 (6) Nats Enough.

Best Value:
Race 7 (11) Cliff House.
