John Schell's Tips For Goulburn Cup Day (Sunday)

By John Schell

Selections based on a soft track

Race 1 - 1:25PM REC & SHEC EQUINE CENTRES SHOWCASE MAIDEN (1600 METRES)

5. Outcast Girl has had one run back from a spell she performed well when finishing fourth at Newcastle. She finished second at Newcastle before the break, and was fifth to subsequent group 1 winner King Colorado at Kembla Grange last campaign. That form looks good for a race like this.

Dangers: 7. Razella has looked good in two runs back from a spell, having been placed in each of them. She is knocking on the door for a win. 2. Egyptologist is on debut for trainer John O’Shea and has had two recent trials to prepare for this. He bears close watching. 6. Queen Of Drama was placed last time out and is worth some thought.

How to play it: Outcast Girl EACH WAY.

Race 2 - 2:05PM KIRK'S BRIDGE FARM CLASS 2 HANDICAP (1600 METRES)

4. Moritz Girl was a debut winner at Mudgee earlier this year then was given a spell. She resumed with a second at Hawkesbury before she won again at Canberra. She since finished a solid fourth when up in grade at Wyong, and gets her chance to win again here.

Dangers: 5. Fairness Is Best scored at Moruya at his latest start and is not out of this. 1. Bellman comes out of TAB Highway grade at Randwick and can improve back to this company. 2. More Mischief is a last start winner capable of showing up..

How to play it: Moritz Girl WIN.

Race 3 - 2:40PM GRAEME SPACKMAN/ELECTEL SERVICES BM66 HANDICAP (1600 METRES)

8. Reet Petite debuted with a second at Canberra when hitting the line well from a long way back. She backed that up with a strong victory at Canberra as an odds-on favourite when she again hit the line well. She has plenty of upside and can go on with the job.

Dangers: 2. Knights Armour was a winner at Wagga two starts ago then was midfield in city company on the Kensington track at Randwick. This is an easier assignment. 1. Nic’s Hero finished second to Knights Armour two starts ago and can give cheek again, while 9. Nothing’s Sacred was placed at Muswellbrook last time out and can figure in the minor money again here.

How to play it: Reet Petite WIN.

Race 4 - 3:15PM CHAMPION THOROUGHBREDS MAIDEN PLATE (1200 METRES)

7. Sheetice finished second in each of his first three runs back from a spell at this track before running a creditable fifth on the Kensington track at Randwick. He will find this an easier assignment and also has the benefit of gate one.

Dangers: 2. Big Ray is a stablemate of Sheetice and he has run well in both his starts to date, the latest a sound fourth at Queanbeyan last Sunday. 12. Maybe Maureen performed well in a Canberra trial leading into this debut, while 6. Big Opinion finished fourth on debut at Moruya and should be better for that effort.

How to play it: Sheetice WIN.

Race 5 - 3:50PM COMPLETE PLUMBING SOLUTIONS BM66 HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

8. Yendy had a couple of sound trials before debuting at Nowra when scoring a narrow victory when racing on the speed. She’s drawn well here and the small field should suit.

Dangers: 1. Mittata hit the line well to score a resuming win at this track and he must be considered again. 7. Shalook wasn’t beaten far at Kembla Grange last time out against a handy enough field and a repeat would have her figuring in this. 4. London Gal was a winner at this track two starts ago then was spelled after a fourth at Canberra. Expect a bold showing fresh.

How to play it: Yendy WIN.

Race 6 - 4:25PM NEWGATE FARM GUY WALTER - F&M C3 HANDICAP (1300 METRES)

2. California Grass is resuming from a spell here and while her best form is over staying trips, she has had two trials to prepare for this. She will be better for this run but should be primed to sprint well.

Dangers: 6. Flic En Flac won at Bathurst and Canberra at her first two starts earlier this year then was spelled after running last at Rosehill. She’s had two trials to prepare for this. 1. Oh Golly Gosh has been tackling tougher races than this recently and can improve sharply on her latest effort. 4. Underground Music is third-up from a spell and ready to peak.

How to play it: California Grass EACH WAY.

Race 7 - 5:00PM CAMPBELL PETROLEUM DISTRIB. CLUB GOULBURN CUP (1400 METRES)

***BIG DANCE 2024 ELIGIBILITY***

8. Pizarro has had three runs back from a spell and despite not being placed in any of them he hasn’t been beaten far. He is ready to peak now and only needs a little luck from the wide barrier in order to be fighting out the finish.

Dangers: 9. Grebeni resumed from a spell in the Silver Eagle and will find this easier. 5. Another One is classy on his day and has barrier one to assist his chances here. 1. Flying Crazy has drawn wide but ran well two starts ago at Rosehill and a repeat of that would have him in the thick of things here.

How to play it: Pizarro EACH WAY.

Race 8 - 5:40PM KURRINDA BLOODSTOCK CLASS 1 HANDICAP (1400 METRES)

3. Ritzytwenties was first-up from a spell when finishing third as favourite after leading. He was a winner when second-up in his initial preparation and can repeat the dose here from the good barrier.

Dangers: 1. Futtaim had three starts earlier this year and after finishing third and second at his first two starts he broke his maiden as a short-priced favourite at Newcastle. He resumes here and is capable of sprinting well fresh. 7. Trendy Lass resumed from a long spell with a midfield Newcastle effort and she should have derived benefit from that run. 5. Donegal Lights is fitter for a first-up run and is capable of figuring in the placings.

How to play it: Ritzytwenties WIN.

Best Bets:
Race 3 (8) Reet Petite.
Race 4 (7) Sheetice.

Best Value:
Race 6 (2) California Grass.
