John Schell's Tips For Gilgandra (Sunday)

By John Schell

Selections based on a good track

Race 1 - 1:15PM AG N VET SERVICES COUNTRY BOOSTED MAIDEN (1600 METRES)

5. Crux Rebellion only has the one second placing to his name from 12 starts and that was at Tamworth two starts ago when narrowly beaten right on the line. He since finished fifth in a Scone maiden when far from disgraced and he looks suited by the 1600m in this. Expect a bold showing with Nick Heywood in the saddle.

Dangers: 10. Sensei Jackie is a front runner which held on well when a last start second at Dubbo. HE should run a bold race again here. 1. Rebel Flyer was placed at Coonamble at his latest start and a repeat would have him in the money again. 2. Boys Cry has been placed in his latest three starts and must be considered again on the strength of those efforts.

How to play it: Crux Rebellion WIN.

Race 2 - 1:50PM KELLY & ASTILL LAWYERS, LEN KELLY MEMORIAL MAIDEN (1100 METRES)

8. Off The Press was on debut at Tamworth when racing on the speed and battling on strongly enough for a third when beaten just over a length. He should have derived plenty of benefit from that outing.

Dangers: 6. He’s All Style finished second at Warren when second-up from a spell. He was a short-priced favourite in that event but can atone here without surprising. 2. Platinum Warrior is on debut and has won a recent trial in preparation for this. 1. Dao Sun failed to beat a runner home on debut at Nowra in August but has won a trial leading into this and a forward showing would not surprise.

How to play it: Off The Press WIN.

Race 3 - 2:25PM GILGANDRA TOYOTA COO-EE CUP - CLASS 3 HANDICAP (1800 METRES)

7. Stockholm began his career in the Bjorn Baker stable and since then he moved to the stable of Cody Morgan, for who he has looked good winning his last two starts. Stockholm scored by a big margin as favourite at Cowra two starts ago, then backed that up with victory at Warren.

Dangers: 2. Mr Invincible won at Narromine four starts ago and has since been placed in each of his latest three outings, the latest at Wellington in November. Expect him to be prominent again. 1. Seahaven ran well at Tamworth when last produced and must be respected in this company. 3. Foxy Baroness is a last start winner that could show up at best again here.

How to play it: Stockholm WIN.

Race 4 - 3:05PM AHRENS SUPER MAIDEN HANDICAP (1280 METRES)

2. Turbo Charged was resuming from a spell on the back of two trials when she resumed with a solid fourth at Tamworth. She will be fitter for that assignment and she’s drawn well in this.

Dangers: 5. Bit Of A Step was only just pipped when second at Mudgee two starts back then was just behind the placings at Scone last time out. The inside gate will help in this. 7. Mrs Bull ran well when placed at Coonamble in what was her first run for a new stable. She can only improve on that effort. 1. Mission Declare ran well enough on debut and could sneak into the minor money again in this.

How to play it: Turbo Charged WIN.

Race 5 - 3:40PM THINK WATER OUTWEST DUBBO, BOB FORAN MEM. TOWN PLATE (1100M)

5. Raging Rush is a four-time winner from 11 starts and his form looks solid for a race like this. He scored at Narromine three starts ago then ran well at Dubbo before again performing admirably at Hawkesbury last time out. He looks suited in this event.

Dangers: 3. Beauchamp led and wasn’t beaten far at Coonamble at his most recent start and he has the talent to be a factor. 2. Cheptegei showed some improvement when second-up from a spell and should be ready to peak now. 6. Sir Donald was safely held at Inverell last time out but wouldn’t surprise if he ran into the minor money here.

How to play it: Raging Rush WIN.

Race 6 - 4:15PM JOKERS INK, KATE SMITH MEMORIAL BM58 HANDICAP (1100 METRES)

3. Nest In The Hills is first-up from a spell in this but he has a handy overall record and despite the wide draw he can play a major part in the finish. He was placed in his latest two starts before the break and a bold fresh showing is on the cards.

Dangers: 1. Daredevil hasn’t been the most consistent of performers of late but did manage to finish third and fourth at Wellington in two runs in between a few down the track efforts. At his best he can figure in the money against these. 2. Obsessive Nature comes into this on the back of a last start Warren victory and warrants plenty of thought. 5. Benyatta won well enough at Bathurst last time out to be worth plenty of thought again.

How to play it: Nest In The Hills EACH WAY.

Race 7 - 5:00PM GILGANDRA SERVICE CLUB GILGANDRA CUP (1600 METRES)

2. Athena’s Lad is resuming from a spell here over 1600m but has a great record over this distance and invariably runs well first-up. He’s drawn well and is worth plenty of thought.

Dangers: 1. Macchina Volante has a solid record with seven wins from 32 starts and wasn’t beaten far when a last start third on the Riverside track at Wagga. Expect a forward showing in this. 7. Not Too Bad has been racing well with recent wins at Wellington and Narromine as well as placings at Gunnedah and Bathurst. 6. Turgenev is a last start Orange winner which could show up here at his best.

How to play it: Athena’s Lad WIN.

Race 8 - 5:35PM CHRIS BOWMAN TRANSPORT CLASS 2 HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

7. Rubi Air resumed with an Orange placing before scoring at Narromine. She can improve on her latest effort on the Wagga Riverside and prove hard to hold out in this.

Dangers: 8. Nannu has been racing well with a couple of recent wins against easier grade. He was a last start second at Warren and if he repeats that effort then he should be in the money again. 2. Ms Reeves won at Dubbo when resuming from a long spell then was placed at Orange and Dubbo before scoring again last time out at Scone. This race looks well within her reach. 1. Dream Game hasn’t been beaten far in both runs since resuming and is worth plenty of thought at a good price.

How to play it: Rubi Air EACH WAY.

Best Bets:
Race 3 (7) Stockholm.
Race 5 (5) Raging Rush.

Best Value:
Race 6 (3) Nest In The Hills.
