John Schell's Tips For Dubbo Cup Day (Sunday)

By John Schell

Selections based on a soft track

Race 1 - 1:00PM STRIDYL | ATC FOUNDATION MAIDEN PLATE (1000 METRES)

14. Joy Of The World is a filly on debut here and she’s had two trials leading into this event. She’s finished second in each of those trials and Tyler Schiller takes the ride. She’s well-bred and if she runs up to her trials she should take a power of beating.

Dangers: 15. Pattera has been placed in three of four starts and only went down narrowly at Narromine last time out. He’s drawn the rails here and warrants respect. 3. Angelisle is a mare on debut and she comes into this on the back of a good trial. 7. The Curves Girl debuts here and ran well in a recent trial. She is poised to run well.

How to play it: Joy Of The World WIN.

Race 2 - 1:35PM TOMMY TOYOTA SHOWCASE SUPER MAIDEN HANDICAP (1400 METRES)

2. Mad Harry has a solid record with three placings to his name from seven starts. He resumed from a spell with a late closing second at Tamworth and only needs to run up to that.

Dangers: 1. The Impeckable resumed with a second behind Broadway Follies when narrowly beaten. There was plenty to like about that performance and he has the ability to give this a shake. 6. Ahellbenda ran third on debut and then finished fourth at Hawkesbury at her second start. She’s shown enough ability to be rated a leading chance in this. 5. Let’s Go Leo has finished second in each of his latest five starts and only needs to run up to those efforts to be a leading chance again.

How to play it: Mad Harry WIN.

Race 3 - 2:10PM MARTIN COLLINS AUSTRALIA BENCHMARK 66 HANDICAP (2200 METRES)

6. No Second Thoughts is an ultra-consistent galloper that broke through with her second win from nine starts when leading throughout to score at Bathurst when last produced. She’s been placed in a further five runs and should push forward from an awkward draw.

Dangers: 3. Final Comment was a winner at Moruya two starts ago, and then ran a solid second at Hawkesbury when last produced. He is racing well enough to give this a shake. 4. Zounile has been racing in good form and only needs to run up to those efforts to be a good chance in this. 2. Raiding has a good record and is not out of this if she’s up to her best.

How to play it: No Second Thoughts WIN.

Race 4 - 2:45PM TOYOTA TUNDRA BENCHMARK 58 SHOWCASE HANDICAP (1300 METRES)

12. Broadway Follies was having her first start in a race when scoring a narrow but impressive win at Bathurst a couple of weeks ago. Her trials before that were good and she’s drawn ideally.

Dangers: 8. Adelsun is a talented mare coming into this on the back of a last start win at Orange. She has a solid record and is not out of this. 4. Shaquila was a last start second at Bathurst and has the ability to give this a shake. 3. Hit The Rim has his share of ability when at his best and is worth including among the main chances.

How to play it: Broadway Follies WIN.

Race 5 - 3:20PM ALL-NEW TOYOTA LANDCRUISER PRADO C1 HANDICAP (1300 METRES)

1. Bush Telegraph has only had three starts but has shown talent with a victory on debut at Hawkesbury before finishing third at that track at her second start. She failed to fire on a heavy track at Kembla Grange before being spelled and resumes here on the back of two trials.

Dangers: 5. Rothgate is a winner of two of nine starts and he is from a good stale. He should be hard to hold out here. 3. Heavenly Legend finished second at Queanbeyan two starts ago and then was down the track at Canberra. He has the talent at best to run well here. 11. Mrs Bull resumed with a fifth placing and should be better with that run under her belt.

How to play it: Bush Telegraph WIN.

Race 6 - 3:55PM XXXX GOLD VINCENT GORDON FLYING HANDICAP (1100 METRES)

2. Gallant Star is a high-class galloper that is already in The Kosciuszko and was placed in the Country Championships Final at Randwick at his latest start in the autumn before being spelled

Dangers: 4. Driving Force hit the line hard to score a strong win at Tamworth when last produced. His form before the spell was great and he should be primed to run well here. 14. Castlebar Road ran well when placed at Tamworth last time out and is not out of this. 15. Lonhro’s Queen is a winner of four from eight and comes into this after two Highway wins. She should run well here.

How to play it: Gallant Star WIN.

Race 7 - 4:35PM DUBBO CITY & GILGANDRA TOYOTA DUBBO GOLD CUP (1600 METRES)

*BIG DANCE ELIGIBILITY*

11. High Dandy looked great winning his first two starts back from a spell having performed well in good grade races as a three-year-old. He was midfield at Rosehill last time out and had the tactical speed to overcome a bad draw here.

Dangers: 5. Medatsu is a well performed galloper that has won two city races of late before finishing sixth in the Wyong Cup. He’s a talented galloper and must be respected in this. 3. Hollywood Hero wasn’t beaten far when midfield at Randwick when last produced. He should run well here. 1. I’ve Bean Tryin’ has drawn the inside gate and looks to have the ability to give this a major shake.

How to play it: High Dandy EACH WAY.

Race 8 - 5:15PM ARROWFIELD COUNTRY MAGIC CLASS 2 PLATE (1100 METRES)

6. Shipshape was midfield in each of his most recent runs before being spelled. He looms as a major chance here if he can run up to those efforts.

Dangers: 9. Crimson Bonnet has been placed in both her latest two starts and is not out of this. 2. Don’t Call Me Honey comes into this after a last start failure at Randwick. This looks easier. 12. Moritz Girl is resuming for a new stable. She has a good record and bears close watching fresh.

How to play it: Shipshape EACH WAY.

Best Bets:
Race 6 (2) Gallant Star.
Race 4 (12) Broadway Follies.

Best Value:
Race 7 (11) High Dandy.
