John Schell's Tips For Coonamble Cup Day (Sunday)

By John Schell

Selections based on a good track

Race 1 - 1:15PM WOODHAMS & PARAGON PASTORAL MAIDEN PLATE (1100 METRES)

1. Equitable has only had two stars but hasn’t been disgraced when midfield in each of them. He’s drawn a wide gate here but looks to have the ability to perform well in this and apprentice Chelsea Hillier takes the ride.

Dangers: 2. Hutt Street finished third on debut at Narromine before finishing fourth at Mudgee when running home well. He’s had a trial leading into this and should run well fresh. 3. Informed is yet to show up in three starts but resumes here on the back of a strong trial win and is set to show improvement under race conditions. 10. Almost Maybe is on debut and wasn’t beaten far in a Wyong trial. He can show up against these.

How to play it: Equitable WIN.

Race 2 - 1:50PM SHOWCASE PICNIC CHAMPIONSHIP (1400 METRES)

2. Foxstorm has been racing consistently of late and is a last start winner by a big margin. His form before that was also good and he should take plenty of beating in this.

Dangers: 7. Belle O’Ballee hasn’t been disgraced in her most recent starts since scoring at the Picnics five starts ago. 3. Individualist was a winner three starts ago and is a last start placegetter that could give cheek. 10. Have Mercy is a talented mare that is worth including among the main chances.

How to play it: Foxstorm WIN.

Race 3 - 2:25PM SWANNY’S FOODS & XXXX SUPER MAIDEN HANDICAP (1300 METRES)

10. Ahellbenda has only had three starts but has been placed in two of them. She raced on the speed at Dubbo last time out and fought to the line well to finish third. Another bold showing is on the cards in this.

Dangers: 4. Rennata resumed from a spell with a solid third at Newcastle. That form looks strong for a race like this. 12. Let’s Go Leo had been racing well before a last start failure. He can bounce back here. 1. Byron’s Farm has been placed in four of five starts and is not out of this.

How to play it: Ahellbenda WIN.

Race 4 - 3:00PM KEADY FAMILY COONAMBLE CRYSTAL SPRINT (1200 METRES)

1. Sneak Preview may have been massive odds in the Dubbo Cup when scoring, but he has the talent to score again in this. He only needs to have maintained form to be the one to beat.

Dangers: 2. Driving Force has been racing well either side of a spell. He has the talent to give this a shake after a resuming win and a last start fourth. 3. Jacenza is handy at best and has the talent to show up in this company. 5. Castlebar Road has been racing well having been just behind the placings in two runs since a Mendooran win.

How to play it: Sneak Preview WIN.

Race 5 - 3:35PM NALDER FAMILY SHOWCASE CLASS 3 HANDICAP (1600 METRES)

7. Smart Shot is a five-year-old that has only had 15 starts. He won at Tamworth on the back of a trial and has since been placed in two runs at Muswellbrook and Scone. Another bold showing is on the cards here.

Dangers: 1. Ring Ahoy is a former Chris Waller trained galloper that ran home well when a last start fourth at Dubbo. He has the ability to perform well in this grade. 4. Medinah tackled a couple Highway events before finishing third at Scone when last produced. He has claims on his best form. 8. Charlotting hasn’t been too far away without winning of late and could be placed.

How to play it: Smart Shot WIN.

Race 6 - 4:10PM FUTURITY PASTORAL BARADINE CUP BM66 HANDICAP (1400 METRES)

11. Hit The Rim has been racing close to his best form again with a couple of handy efforts of late. He followed a third at Dubbo with a last start fourth at the same track, and a repeat of those efforts would have him hard to hold out here.

Dangers: 1. Sea Of Flames is resuming from a spell and has a big weight to contend with but that is offset by the apprentice allowance. He’s performed well enough fresh to be considered a leading contender here. 6. Red Cobra was big odds when scoring at Kembla Grange at his latest start and now that he’s won again he could go on with the job. 12. Night Fighter comes into this on the back of a last start Tamworth victory and that form should stack up well here.

How to play it: Hit The Rim EACH WAY.

Race 7 - 4:45PM GERONIMO – NEW HOLLAND COONAMBLE GOLD CUP (1600 METRES)

***BIG DANCE ELIGIBILITY***

1. Roma Avenue held on well to score a win at Rosehill three starts ago. He was since placed behind Major Beel at Randwick and then wasn’t beaten far behind Unusual Legacy at Rosehill. This looks well within his reach and he is from a good stable.

Dangers: 2. Hollywood Hero won this race last year and he’s racing well enough again to give this a shake. His city form was solid before running third in the Dubbo Cup last time out. He should take plenty of beating. 4. Ravello was speed after a third placing at Randwick. He had two trials before resuming with a strong win at Warwick Farm when he did the job well. 6. Sharp Shock hit the line well for a second at Randwick before running home fairly in the Dubbo Cup. He can run well here.

How to play it: Roma Avenue WIN

Race 8 - 5:20PM QUBE AGRI CLASS 2 SHOWCASE HANDICAP (1100 METRES)

3. Not Written Off has been racing in great heart of late. She’s a winner of two from 10 starts and has had a further four placings. She looks promising and her form looks solid for a race like this.

Dangers: 1. Deion was a winner at Dubbo back in February then ran last at Tanworth before being spelled. He resumed with a solid fourth at Dubbo and should be better for that run. 6. Stratified is a last start Narromine winner when leading throughout and warrants respect again. 5. Shaquila hasn’t been too far away of late and was midfield at Dubbo when last produced.

How to play it: Not Written Off WIN.

Best Bets:
Race 3 (10) Ahellbenda.
Race 7 (1) Roma Avenue.

Best Value:
Race 6 (11) Hit The Rim.
