John Schell's Tips For Armidale (Sunday)

By John Schell

(Selections based on a soft track)

Race 1 - 12:50PM ARMIDALE SERVICES CLUB MAIDEN HANDICAP (1400 METRES):

6. Jubilee Queen has only had one start but she was far from disgraced when finishing fifth at Inverell on debut. That was on a heavy track and she may well strike a rain affected surface again in this. She can give this a shake.

Dangers: 7. Master Tyler has been struggling of late but isn’t striking a strong race here. 8. Nikody’s Diego has had plenty of chances but has place claims here. 4. Charlie Bali was midfield at Coffs Harbour last time out and has claims here.

How to play it: Jubilee Queen WIN.

Race 2 - 1:25PM LAING & SIMMONS REAL ESTATE ARMIDALE C1 & MAIDEN (1900 M):

8. Sacred Girl had been just behind the placings in three starts at Hawkesbury, Moree and this track, before running well when finishing second at Scone last time out. Ashley Morgan was in the saddle in that event and he retains the ride here.

Dangers: 1. Casino Bear was just behind the placings in a few recent runs before winning at Taree in good fashion and then finishing second at that track in the last week. He’s racing well enough to be rated a chance again here. 7. My Gem ran well at Tamworth last time out and has claims again with a repeat of that. 9. Keyless Go is still a maiden but shows some talent and has place claims.

How to play it: Sacred Girl WIN.

Race 3 - 2:00PM TONY WILLIAMS MACHINERY C2 HANDICAP (1300 METRES):

4. Twentyeightdragons has been racing well since resuming from a spell. He resumed at Kembla Grange before scoring as favourite at Inverell. He was since only just beaten when finishing second at Moree and has the advantage of barrier one in this.

Dangers: 1. Macleay was a winner at Moree in May last year then finished third at Tamworth last December before being spelled. He’s had two trials to prepare for this return to racing and must be considered. 5. Royalz is a last start Scone winner with claims again, while 6. Good Times Again won at Inverell last time out and is worth some thought.

How to play it: Twentyeightdragons WIN.

Race 4 - 2:35PM JOCK MCPHEE AM BM66 HANDICAP (1400 METRES):

8. Much More Torque has hit his straps of late with two wins from his latest two starts. He hit the line well to score at Taree three runs back, before finishing fifth at Grafton when not beaten far. He since bounced back with a solid victory at Kempsey, and only has to have maintained that form.

Dangers: 4. Rura Penthe wasn’t beaten too far when resuming from a spell at Moree and has since had a tick over trial at Scone. He is primed to run well here while fresh. 5. China Grove won at Quirindi two starts back then was close-up when third at Tamworth last time out. He warrants respect here. 7. Dynastic comes into this on the back of a last start win and is worth thought.

How to play it: Much More Torque WIN.

Race 5 - 3:12PM MARIA RIVER CATTLE CO SUPER MAIDEN PLATE (1100 METRES):

3. Somerton Sniper was well in the market on debut at Muswellbrook and ran well enough when finishing sixth when not beaten too far. He will be better for that experience and this is not an overly hard race.

Dangers: 10. Wet And Windy was placed at Inverell at her latest start and she can figure prominently again with a repeat of that. 5. Mister Miyagi has finished second at his last two starts at Moree and Scone, and has claims again here. 6. Dance Off was down the track last time out but can improve.

How to play it: Somerton Sniper WIN.

Race 6 - 3:51PM DEBORTOLI WINES ARMIDALE NEWMARKET HCP (1100 METRES):

4. Red Beryl hasn’t figured in the placings in his last four starts but he is handy at best and bobs up every now and again. He is drawn to get the run of the race from the inside alley.

Dangers: 2. Golden Point has a solid overall record and is a city winner that should be thereabouts. 6. Roussos is rarely far away and has claims. 3. Quiet Riot resumed from a spell for a new stable with a down the track effort at Scone but is capable of improvement.

How to play it: Red Beryl EACH WAY.

Race 7 - 4:30PM TOOHEYS ARMIDALE CUP (1900 METRES):

1. Savvy Lad has plenty of weight to contend with but has a good overall record and his recent form has been sound. He was a winner at Murwillumbah and Lismore before a midfield effort in the Lismore Cup. He’s since run well in a couple of Eagle Farm runs, the latest behind Little Mix, which went to Melbourne to win during cup week.

Dangers: 2. Galaxy Belle is a talented performer on her day and she was a winner at Newcastle late last year. She’s had two starts back from a spell in city grade and is on the improve. 4. Full Press will find this much easier than the Big Dance last time out and warrants thought. 7. Kingstar Bullet was placed at Inverell last time out and has place claims again.

How to play it: Savvy Lad EACH WAY.

R8 - 5:11PM ROBERTS & MORROW CHARTERED ACCOUNTANTS BM58 HCP (1100 M):

3. Nosey hit the line well to finish third at Scone two starts ago then backed that up with a second at Bong Bong as favourite. He’s drawn to advantage in this.

Dangers: 12. Yamabushi is a speedy customer that was a winner at Tuncurry before being spelled. He’s resuming here and is primed for a bold showing despite drawing wide. 7. Lavish Lady is a winner of three from 12 and is racing well enough to give this a shake. 10. The Affirmative was beaten less than a length when second at Quirindi at her latest start and she can figure in the placings again.

How to play it: Nosey EACH WAY.

Best Bets:
Race 2 (8) Sacred Girl.
Race 3 (4) Twentyeightdragons.

Best Value:
Race 6 (6) Red Beryl.
