John Schell's Tips For Albury Cup Day (Thursday)

By John Schell

Selections based on a good track

Race 1 - 1:35PM DLG ALUMINIUM & GLAZING CLASS 3 HANDICAP (1500 METRES)

1. Villasaurus maintained his consistent record when scoring a win in Highway grade at Rosehill last November and then finished third in another Highway at Rosehill before being spelled. He resumed from a spell with a third at Wagga in the SDRA Country Championships at Wagga in what was a good effort, and he’s won a trial at Wagga leading not this to tick over. 2. Future Fund was close-up when fifth in the SDRA Country Championships and then took on city grade at Sandown when down the track. This is easier and he can bounce back to form. 4. Exceedingly Hot did the job well when racing on the speed and scoring a strong win at Wagga two starts ago and followed that up with a last start third at the Sapphire Coast. 6. Downtown’s Abbey returned from a break with a solid fourth at Canberra and is far from the worst here.

How to play it: Villasaurus WIN.

Race 2 - 2:10PM NAUGHTIN DEVELOPMENT GROUP FLAT KNACKER (900 METRES)

2. Fangela ran second at Canberra when second-up from a spell and has since looked good winning two in a row at the same track. He’s drawn well here and has the benefit of an apprentice allowance. 1. Sparring has been tackling tougher company of late at Randwick and Flemington and should find this more to his liking. 6. Rumours Abound has also been taking on city grade of late and will find this an easier task. 4. Tap ‘N’ Run is resuming from a break and can sprint well fresh.

How to play it: Fangela WIN.

Race 3 - 2:50PM TONKIN GROUP SUPER MAIDEN SHOWCASE PLATE (1175 METRES)

6. Monte Veebee has a good record with four seconds from seven starts. He resumed with a second as favourite on the Kensington track at Randwick when not beaten too far. He gets his chance to break through here from the good draw. 4. Barrelling wasn’t disgraced on debut at Morphettville and has had a trial and jump out in preparation for this resuming run. 12. Dubai Darling has performed well enough in two runs to date to be rated a good chance here, while 3. Stairway hasn’t been far away in four starts and has place claims.

How to play it: Monte Veebee WIN.

Race 4 - 3:25PM ALLURE LASH & BEAUTY SHOWCASE CLASS 2 HANDICAP (1000 METRES)

5. One Hard Lady has looked good easily winning both of her starts at this track and then Gundagai. She’s drawn ideally here and should race in a forward position and take plenty of beating again. 2. Runranirun resumed with a second at Newcastle when beaten by a big margin. She can figure in the placings again. 1. Reasonable Point is rarely too far from the action and comes into this after a last start fourth at Pakenham. 4. Brial Rose has a handy record and hasn’t been beaten far in both runs since resuming from a spell.

How to play it: One Hard Lady WIN.

Race 5 - 4:05PM LEXUS OF WODONGA BENCHMARK 74 HANDICAP (1400 METRES)

5. Mighty Myrtle was a winner at Canberra last November and was then spelled. She resumed with a fifth in the SERA Country Championships and then ran fourth in the Wild Card at Goulburn in another solid effort. She’s drawn wide here but has the form to give this a shake. 8. Daze Off was a short-priced favourite when racing on the speed to score at Wagga at her last start and she can make an impact if she can go on with the job here. 6. Persian Dancer resumed with a solid second at Wagga behind Arthur The Great and has claims again with a repeat of that, while 7. Nats Enough ran third in the same race and can show up again.

How to play it: Mighty Myrtle WIN.

Race 6 - 4:40PM COMMERCIAL CLUB ALBURY - ALBURY GOLD CUP (2000 METRES)

***BIG DANCE ELIGIBILITY***

6. Matusalem was close-up when unplaced at Randwick and then ran a great race when finishing second in the Canberra Cup. He was since beaten just over three lengths in the Easter Cup at Caulfield and looks suited here despite the wide gate. 9. Medatsu also comes out of the Neville Sellwood in which he finished ninth and he will find this an easier assignment. 13. My Brothers Keeper had consistent city form in Melbourne before scoring a solid last start win at Caulfield and he is well worth including among the main chances again. 4. Redstone Well ran third in the Canberra Cup two starts ago and then wasn’t beaten too far in the Easter Cup. He can give cheek here.

How to play it: Matusalem EACH WAY.

Race 7 - 5:20PM CARLTON DRAUGHT SHOWCASE BM58 HANDICAP (1175 METRES)

4. Schimmelbusch was in great form with a couple of seconds at Benalla and Wangaratta before breaking through in maiden grade to score at Echuca. He was since beaten just over 3.5 lengths when ninth at Pakenham and has the advantage of a good gate here with an apprentice allowance. 6. Hollerloud resumed with a close second at Corowa before scoring in a super maiden at Wagga last time out. He has the ability to go right on with the job here. 7. Magic Leprechaun was a winner at Wagga in February and then finished a close-up fourth at Kilmore last time out. He is worth thought here. 2. Prophet’s Daughter wasn’t beaten far in the SDRA Country Championships when last produced and has since finished fourth behind Villasaurus in a Wagga trial. He warrants respect.

How to play it: Schimelbusch WIN.

Best Bets:
Race 2 (2) Fangela.
Race 5 (5) Mighty Myrtle.

Best Value:
Race 6 (6) Matusalem.
