Find out what the jockeys made of their mounts after the $1,000,000 Evergreen Turf Country Championships Final (1400m) at Royal Randwick.
Aaron Bullock (Know Thyself): "I wouldn’t be here on these horses if it wasn’t for John and Paul. They’ve had confidence in me here today to come and let me ride him half (a kilogram) over. I don’t ride these weights often.
“It was all worth it. I couldn’t do it without this pair (wife and baby boy), they’re the ones that drive me every day so it’s very good. But like I said, I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for the support from Arrowfield and the team.
“It’s just good to get the win. I’ve got 12 Qualifying trophies at home, so now I can finally add a Finals one to the trophy cabinet. Very happy.
“It just shows how much loyalty they’ve got. There’s a lot better riders in that room than me, but I’m here all year round doing the hard work and they’ve rewarded me for it. So I can’t be any more thankful.”
Know Thyself wins the Country Championships Final
Tim Clark (Lisztomania): “He ran terrific. Had a beautiful run throughout following Gallant Star. Just came up short but proud of his effort.”
Blake Shinn (Fukubana): “He ran well. Happy with the run we got from the draw. Close off nicely.”
Jason Collett (Gallant Star): “Brave. He sat close to the speed but found wanting late.”
Dylan Gibbons (Sumo Fish): “Too bad to be true. Just wait and see how he pulls up.”
Nash Rawiller (Tribeca Star): “Just didn't go on with it today.”
Simon Miller (Canny Hell): “Really disappointing. Got really razzed up in the mounting yard which is not like him. If he travels further than 3 hours he loses his stuff. I think we’ll keep him closer to home.”
Craig Williams (Zarizatycoon): “Clearly there must be something wrong there. Went 800m and just stopped.”
Pierre Boudvillain (Ticklebelly): “Huge run. Just probably a bit too far back into the prep. Very happy with how everything went.”
Mathew Cahill (Burrandana): “Very disappointing.”
Mitch Stapleford (Don Stefano): “Tried his hardest. Just looking for further now.”
Clayton Gallagher (Rouge Moulin): “Travelled coming into the turn. Probably just lacking that little bit of fitness on that type of track. Probably wants it a bit firmer. Honest enough.”
Tommy Berry (Sunchyme): “She was great from a bad barrier. We rode her quietly. Probably looking for further. Held her own.”
Damian Lane (Intervarsity): “Found the lead really comfortably. Unfortunately got no rest once I was there. Horse outside the lead had pressure on the whole race. As a result couldn’t finish off.”
Zac Purton (Sass 'N' Cheek): “Wasn’t helped when Craig’s stopped in front of me at the 600m. Still ran well.”
Kerrin McEvoy (Mckeon): No comment.
